Our Favourite South Island Campsite! - Nelson Creek

- We are back at one of our favorite campsites in this week's video, Nelson Creek. Located about 45min out of Reefton, Nelson Creek is home to some fantastic gold mining history. It's covered in old mining tunnels, tail races, and even has a public gold fossicking area where you can try your hand at gold mining yourself. We also take a look at the nearby Waiuta, New Zealand's largest Ghost Town.
A great campsite complete with a beautiful creek to swim in, Nelson Creek has it all and is well worth a visit.

Hope you enjoyed the video? Sorry for how loud those Cicadas were while we were in the bush!
Loud cicadas are very much part of the NZ summer wherever there are trees!❤
I love the Nelson Creek campground. I was there for Labour Weekend 2021 along with 'half' the population of Greymouth and enjoyed a great community campfire. Too cold to swim for me, but no biting bugs. Great walks. A noisy party at the pub all of one night was the only issue.
Oh yeh I bet it gets busy on those long weekends! Seems like it could hold a fair few people but bet it gets noisy. Great spot that one 😊
Interesting, caves, gold panning, history, enjoyed, I will put on my travel plan, Cheers Bevan 🤠❤️🦘🦘🇦🇺
Nice one Bevan! You would like that spot 👌
Wow, you were proper explorers in those caves and tunnels. Love a nice unstructured campground - especially when it's not packed full. I remember that town from your last visit - and it's still amazing how much there was.
It’s neat huh! I bet there is loads more to be explore around that area, there are hundreds of mines apparently! One of our favourites for sure 😊
What a great place, I can see why it's your favourite 👍
Not bad aye! We love it there 😊
Looks great! Will add that to our bucket list. Always on the look out for great swimming spots Ü
Yeh the swimming there was really nice! And a cliff to jump off is that is a bit of you 😉
What a great time you had, we're with Chelsea having clothing tucked in. 6 out of 5 stars, there is a book exchange at the community hall next to the pub 😉
Is there!!! I missed that one 😅 love a good book exchange!
Added that camp to our list also Thanks
Nice on Wayne! Enjoy 😉
good on yous fun times
Yeh it’s a mint place! Aside from the sandflies haha
Great locations guys!
Not a bad one huh! We had a great time there 👍
Hope Chelsea’s bounced back from flu!
Definitely a great place, looked pretty quiet in the drone shot, but then you see them tucked under the trees. Very dry at the moment for the West Coast.
Awesome to see some of the tunnels and mining remains, we will have to explore further next time. It's great being able to have the dogs at the camp, but a bit tricky not being able to take them across the bridge and into the DOC areas. It'd be nice to spend a couple of nights up at Waiuta sometime too.
Oh yeh I didn’t think about that! So you are not allowed them on the walks? That’s a shame… yeh it was so hot everyone was under the trees haha
Cool spot alright👍 handy having the pub across the road for a cooked meal and a drink every now and then too, I'll get there one day lol. Have you guys done a brake upgrade to the car at all?
No upgrades to the car yet 👍 we have the Witi brake controller installed in the caravan and it seems to work really well on hills etc
Hi, thanks for letting us into your adventures.
Can you give me/us a deep dive into your tow vehicle and van weight and how you manage any issues. Thanks.
Yeh sure thing Boyd! I’m actually busy prepping a tour video which will cover all the weights but the caravans empty weight is 2470kg, and has a payload of 1030kg (taking it to 3500kg) that said our MUX is only rated up to 3000kg so we have to be careful about weights. Might look at a new tow vehicle in the future but we don’t really need to load that much in the caravan now that we are not living in it full time 👍

Welcome 🤗
you have not been to the tuapeka mouth punt a great ride
Oh just had a Google and it looks really cool! Will have to put it on the list 👍
Great revisiting places and doing all new adventures with lots to explore 👍 Did you drive to Waiuta Ghost Town or walk from where you were staying ❓🤔 Still have Nelson Creek on our list of places from your last visit, now added Waiuta 👍 Hope Chelsea continues to get better sooner to enjoy your remaining adventures 👍 😀
We drove up, I think it’s about 30min away (back towards Reefton). Not sure if I would tow the caravan up the gravel road to Waiuta so we left it at Nelson Creek
What a cool place. I've added it to our list of destinations. Heading to Sth Island in 9 days time. Thanks guys. Hope you've made a full recovery Chelsea.
She’s feeling much better thanks Dave! When are you off to the South Island?
@@AdventuresWithRosy supposed to be crossing on the Kaitaki on the 8th. But uts still out of action & everything else is fully booked. We'll go to plimmerton & wait it out I think.
Great video very informative. One thing you said dogs were allowed at Nelson Creek, just checked and it says no dog's. Hope to be in the South Island in 3 weeks. Will look out for you. Love your caravan. 👍
Oh really! I saw dogs around haha. Thanks for that, I’ll made an edit in the description 😊👍
Sutch a shame, down side of having a dog 🐕 but there are lots of plusses as well. Thanks for getting back.
The campground is a community domain and you are allowed dogs there. The main picnic area down by the river and the walking tracks are DOC and dogs are not allowed in these areas, the pooches can swim up or down stream of the picnic area which we did when we were there over new years
Would be interested to know what your fuel consumption is with the MUX towing the new caravan.
Good question Robert, so the computer on the MUX shows 11.2l per 100km as the average since I tripped it before we left. We did a mix of towing and day trips without the caravan so it’s probably a little higher when towing 🤔
Thanks for the reply. Im getting on average 14.3 l/100kmh towing 2.5T so your’s might have dropped a bit with the day trips. If not i had better get my rig checked.
@@robertsparrow6714 we did quite a few day trips without the van so it probably lowered it quite a bit! I’ll see if it shows me live next time I’m towing 👍
