  • Jerry Garcia on Pedal Steel, and my favorite song, 'I Don't Know You' by John Dawson (R.I.P.) - New Riders Of the Purple Sage.
In terms of American music, the New Riders were the quintessential psychedelic country band. In 1969, there wasn't anyone doing what they were doing, With Garcia's sound on pedal steel and Dawson's great songs and imagery, they really had something special.

I'm a steel player since 1975, & I can tell you, Garcia was pretty dang good....especially missing a finger on his picking hand. Intonation, blocking accuracy, etc, were surprisingly right on target. He sounded really great...& that's what matters the most.

Whet is it that makes people so damn high and mighty? Jerry Garcia was as good as he could be and that was fuckin' amazing. About the only place he didn't get to was a Wheaties box and he should have been. Pedal steel? Oh yeah. Yup. Gets the hair on my arms to stand up...no matter how many times I hear the same tune. I'm not young. Grew up with the whole experience. I'm as proud as can be to have been there and had the chance to watch a legend be born...change how we approached music...and still inspires to this day. His talent and legacy will be felt for a long time. Only regret is that he died before I did. Guess I'll just have to wait and meet up again on whatever the "other side" is. Won't be hard to find him. Just listen for that steel ringing. RIP.

The concept of "best" in guitar or pedal steel player is childish but as a pedal steel player myself I can attest that while their are many more skilled players on the instrument technically than Jerry, the reality is that it comes down to the music and the essential question is always "does what is played on any instrument strengthen the song and is it appropriate to creating the"mood needed by the lyrics" and Jerry was a consummate musician and created outstanding "signature" licks and phrases. So while not necessarily the best technical player he was no slouch either and had unique phrasing setting him apart from the thousands of clone players copying Buddy Emmons, Jimmy Day, John Hughey, Ralph Mooney, Lloyd Green etc.. At the end of the day, the player with his own voice stands out from the crowd and is much preferred to the "busy player' who uses a lot of notes to say nothing. Teach Your Children stands out as a classic piece where touch, tone and feel, in addition to melodic structure make his contribution to the song so powerful that is impossible to conceive of the song without it and ultimately that is the desire of any really good soloist, to play exactly what is needed when and where it is needed and NO MORE but also no less. Not overplaying is truly one of the hardest things for a musician to learn, to recognize that empty space is many times the most powerful contribution at a certain point in a song and creates the condition where the entrance into the mix of a song is incredibly more powerful and meaningful because of the discipline exercised. Jerry was extremely tasty in his playing on the pedal steel and a pleasure to listen to and an inspiration.

I was privileged to be at a NRPS/GD show in San Diego in either in 1971. I snuck a Norelco "Carry-corder", the first portable cassette machine with me. I befriended a girl outsite the front door who had a very large purse, she carried it in for me. I have some of both shows. Watching Jerry warm up on the pedal steel was amazing for me....OK, the whole damned event was amazing!

This is a real, rare gem, Jerry on the pedal steel. He only played it for a short while, and then backed off. Pedal steel is a complex beastie, and Jerry would have had to give up everything else to concentrate on it, so as to play to his own satisfaction. If you know the pedal steel, you can hear how "rudimentary" Jerry's playing is, when compared to "real" steel players, but remember that most steel players just play the pedal steel, since that's what they are in demand for. I think Jerry does a wonderful job making music on the thing, even if he's barely scratching the surface of what was possible. Oh, in case you didn't know, a pedal steel guitar has 6-10 strings, each connected to a variable pitch bridge, controlled by a combination of foot- and knee-levers, which act to tighten or slacken individual strings in patterns which instantaneously, and temporarily, change the tuning of the instrument. So, the player is not only using the bar to "fret" a whole bunch of strings, with the nudge of a knee or the press of a foot, a new instrument is revealed. Imagine that, almost all other tonal instruments, save chromatic harmonicas, are not made to change the way they are tuned in mid-music. So, sit back and enjoy Jerry, being the Talented Amateur.

I had the unbelievable privilege to catch Jerry playing steel on 'Looks Like Rain' at the 8 April 1972 Empire Pool show in London, second night of the Europe '72 tour. I don't know if he played it on any other shows that tour, it is such a pity that he thought he wasn't any good on the instrument and pretty much gave it up. I guess he didn't feel he had an individual enough style of his own on it, but he sure beat the hell out of Nashville regulars...

In Playboy magazine, Jerry Garcia was voted, the best pedal steal guitar player in the world, the fastest guitar player in the world, and the best guitar player in the world. Garcia put the pedal steal away and didn't play it anymore because they put him in competition. J.G. said, "I play the pedal steal because I love it. Not for competition." And that was that.

His playing the bass lines while playing the tunes is something nobody will ever hear again and no-one could try to copy. He is simply stellar, phenomenal. It is the best solo acoustic performance I have ever heard in my life, hands down! Please, type in the yt search bar and get ready! His guitar work on the tunes we know and love is so intricate. His energy is so high. It had to blow every one away, then and now. It truly is GARCIA at the top of his game and you can hear he's loving it!

Jerry could play anything with strings, best is such a foolish word for any artist. How about favorite? I don't think anyone's the best, even the greats can easily be humbled, Jerry was humble and that's why so many played with the man. I would have loved to jam with him, no ego just music. Music for me would be much less colorful had it not been for him. Sing me back home anytime.

A real nice surprise coming across this audio while viewing Jack Casady's site. At this time, being a poor student at SF State, I was living in my VW bus and often parked out by the Great highway where I had some friends. Occasionally I attended the Family Dog when Helms relocated at the old skating rink. I still remember coming across my old friend Bob Musclewhite who was the sound man for a number of bands and this particular gig he was with the New Riders with Garcia playing the pedal steel. And that is about as much as I can remember! Other than the fact the unconscious-conscious vibes me that it was a great time. It must be said that there were few times that weren't great in that time period. Thanks again Scott for triggering a partial memory of a great period in my life.

That's what makes the song so increadibly effective...it was POSSITIVELY SUBVERSIVE!!! At first, I used to scream to my friends 'Turn it off, Turn it off---Jerry's deliberately hurting our ears!! Then it became "It's Cool---he's trying to slip anti-war messages to the Country Hicks! Now days I am stunned to hear how GOOD a Steel Pedal player Garcia was---he should have crossed over to country. I mean listen to 'Teach' and then "I used to be a King" and tell me someone exists who plays better?

There's almost no material available of Jerry playing with the NRPS . If anybody has more, please post it. I was alive, and they were wonderful.

Help!!! Saw NRPS w/ Dead at SUNY, Cortland in '71. Amazing pedal steel on Garden of Eden, it filled the field house if not the universe. Maybe it was the drugs!? Any reproductions of this?

It's not quite true that others were not doing this in 1969. The Flying Burrito Brothers (with Sneaky Pete Kleinow on pedal steel) were.
Nonetheless, this track is INCREDIBLE! Thanks for posting.

Hey can anyone clue me into a specific Dead concert date.. or era..
I recall hearing a soundboard show (seems like it was a '69 or so?) where Jerry stayed on Pedal-Steel the whole time.. I recall hearing "Hard to Handle" and Jerry wailing on the steel!! WOW!! Seems like it was in that era when Bobby was still singing Dire Wolf.. if anyone can clue me into the date I would be all the more Grateful!! :-)

Over forty years ago since this was recorded and nearly twenty years since Garcia died and people still arguing about weather he was a decent pedal steel player.
    Who gives a fuck!
Far more important thing in life to worry about!

Love Jerry's playing. I guess there are "better" players out there on pedal steel and/or guitar, but I always loved Jerry's style, whether a long exploratory jam, or short solos like on this song. I don't know enough to know if he was technically proficient, but he did "it" for me.

Neil Young swears Jerry was playing a standard electric guitar, lap style with a volume pedal on recording Teach Your Children.🤔
