Jerry Garcia (Pedal Steel) New Riders of the Purple Sage -"Last Lonely Eagle"

- Jerry Garcia plays the Pedal Steel for the New Riders of the Purple Sage circa 1969. The albumn called "Before Time Began" was from the New Riders' first studio session at Pacific Heights Recording in San Francisco, California, in November 1969. This is the only known studio recording made by the band's original lineup. In the following two years, NRPS often performed as the opening act at Grateful Dead concerts. In 1970, Dave Torbert replaced Phil Lesh as the New Riders' bass player, and Spencer Dryden replaced Mickey Hart on drums.
I drive a big rig. I was listening to this northbound on 25' out of Buffalo Wyoming. The thunderheads and all that sky. The Bighorn mountains and the painted antelope. Jerry's steel guitar and this song were made for that place.
just learned yesterday on my way to denver pronghorn actually are not antelope and Bison are not buffalo :P
what a nice picture
Thanks for that. I can imagine myself in that situation. Had an experience like that listening to spectacular version Morning Dew flying over Colorado
yes the sunsets in the desert can be spectacular
I moved to Tahoe from Illinois (and back) a few years ago and it never crossed my mind to listen to new riders when I was there, and a couple years ago I decided to listen to them and instantly thought of the California Nevada desert and Wyoming. One of the purposes of the highway system was to show the beauty of the country and Wyoming on i80 did a damn good job
I am now 73+ and still to this day... this Tune always sends a tear trickling down my cheeks..... ( but I love it ...just the same*)
5/2024 great memories.
I swear I’ve been listening to jerry and the dead since I was 5 and I can still find a new song to listen too.
Love it to bits
Different take than the one on the record IMHO. Just as good. Always nice to hear every note Jerry ever played.
53 years ago I was 19 and this song set me free
“Remember the peace that you had on the mountain”
Definitely, miss Jerry’s pedal steel sound. He was a master on this instrument, damn impressive for sure. 👊
i absolutely love this song, oe of my all time favorites. i love the riders with jerry.
This is just outstanding. The vibe it sets and mood it bring out are heartwarming.
Nothing like it. Just beautiful...
Sigh. Such sweet steel riffs. 🌹
Oh my, I have to pull off the side of the road and I ain’t even in a car.
My Lord I believe I like Jerry better on steel guitar than any other way! What a work of art!
what a beautiful song.
Absolutely outstanding!

It’s a Donegal song 😊
Just another beautiful day
II'll always remember this song from when John Dawson performed it in D.C. , at the 4th of July Smoke-In in '78 . I stood just feet behind him onstage , at the foot of the Lincoln Memorial , as the fireworks lit the sky above the Washington Monument . He told me years later that alot of performances get lost in memory on the road , but that was one he too would always fondly remember .
Anyone else there ?
YES LOVED NRPS
Beautiful.🦅
This is a gem!
that intro gave me goose bumps ...
Those were the daze....Sage and Jerry were tops back when I was "Cruzin' in CA!!!" back in O.B. in Sandyeggo such good times!! I will"Never Forget!!!"
skybill
wonderful melding of Dead and NRPS
So beautiful. Damn I miss Jerry. I love you Flight of Freedom animated Eagle. Nice work and thanks for posting a fantastic NRPS song.
Nice to run across this - was hoping for video but you get what you get. Remember the Riders with Jerry playing pedal steel at the university Halloween weekend. Had 3rd row seats (1st 2 rows were for GD family) and was seated directly in front of Garcia - not more than 15' away. Experiences like this are what make life rich indeed. Riders played all 4 years at school. Come 72' onward they were more of a pretty good R&R cowboy outfit with Torbert sharing a lot of the leads with Marmaduke.
Man, if this song don't bring at tear to your eye, then you've never really lived.

Man, I'm only at 0:46 and I'm glad I'm the only one in the room 'cuz I feel the blues coming on.

Luv NRPS for more than half a century now!
Saw them a few times in the 70's always a good dance party.
Beautiful
Scott: I thank you from the bottom of my heart for posting. It's Jerry at his best.
timeless
jerry's sacred steel
Awesome !!!
Excellent song
No one played pedal steel like Jerry. I search for those rare moments - this entire album, "I Used to Be a King" on Graham Nash's 1st, "Laughing" on D. Crosby's first - there are others (any referrals, friends?) - but not enough for such an original sound.
One toke over the line Brewer and Shipley got that on vinyl and 2 Bromberg Lps Devil in Disguise and Wanted Dead or Alive
The cure 4 my US BLUES
The date stated for the first album is not 1970. We cut the first album in 1972, after American Beauty. Mickey was with the band when we started but left, and we cut the entire album over with Spencer, who was with Starship / Airplane up until that point.
Sounds like Jerry on harmony vocals on chorus?
I like the studio version better, but this is historically beautiful
PEACE....
Nice way to put it. "Mickey was with the ,,,,,,,but left." His father ripped the band off and he was too embarrassed to show his face, I was there at the Capitol in Port Chester. One night Mickey was there. Next night he was gone.
From better days
Flocking awesome! ;)
Also there's some confusion regarding the studio names. There were two studios with 'Pacific' in them in the bay area at the time. PHR was Pacific High (not heights) Recorders, at 60 Brady Street in San Francisco. The other was miles away in Palo Alto, Pacific Recorders.
My statement about "The first album" refers NOT to that 1969 demo (which I had nothing to do with), but to the first commercial album on CBS that I produced. Whatever happened at the demo sessions did not see the light of day for decades.
Stephen u did a masterful job a masterpiece of country rock thank you so much artwork mastering recording sequencing and pressing I have on original vinyls see my review next week on NRPS for N
new rangers of the cobalt stars ...
now bald eagles r every where
Why did they have to put that last segment in the video? Really...was that necessary?
what, with the doobie? New Riders are all about herb, doncha know what the purple sage is? They have a song about a dope smuggler!
Nothing is necessary. Bit it's in line with the theme
Maybe you've been locked away for a few years
I’m coming to the Mattole & cut my hair
