    Prof Ury is my inspiration. His calm demeanor is so infectious and he reminds me of my labour relations teacher, Prof Anstey. Interestingly, it was he ( prof Anstey) who introduced us ( MA class of 2014 at Nelson Mandela University) to Prof Ury's work. Thanks

    There is a section of Mt. Everest very near the top/summit called "the balcony" from which, in all probability there exists the possibility that there isn't much you/anyone climbing that mountain/challenge/problem/issue can't see in more whole or global terms.
    The real issue as I preceive it in human-human problem solving-- by removing our emotional selves as much as possible-- is doing the hard work of taking back self-awareness, self- control, and the power to make good enough choices that keep our individual goals moving forward-- if only a step at a time.

    IMHO All about choosing to Internalize your own locus of control so that you (as a negotiator) can then choose where and when to communicate with reasoned responses to bring people closer together or devolve(?) to emotional reactivity to drive people away. Buena Suerte to all.

    I tried very hard to listen. It went on and on . Nothing was offered in the 1st 12 minutes. I skipped forward to about half way and found I was supposed to go to the balcony. It's about balconies. Very good. Thumbs up. Live long. No wonder you've been at this for thirty years and haven't got there yet.

      +Stephen Thompson I get what you're saying. The Balcony metaphor didn't work very well with me either. When someone says Balcony, I think of a place with a pretty view and some flowers where I would enjoy smoking a cigar... You could try swapping "Balcony" with "Vantage point" or "Control Tower" or whatever other element you can relate to when thinking about self-control and emotional intelligence.
      An easier to assimilate explanation could be foundin the book "Crucial Conversations. Patterson, Grenny, McMillan, Switzler"

      With all due respect to you I think everything was offered in the way of communicating Mr Ury is respectful of his audience by entering into a dialogue with them-- he isn't just selfishly interested in preaching to a captive audience, he spoke with a confident up tempo tone of voice and he smiled a lot.
      All were signs of a disarming, even charming, and especially engaging personality.
      It is apparent to me that this man knows how to connect with an audience...and therefore it makes what he is saying all the more believable.
