I love the vibes of this bumper its like a summer sunset with palm trees with a fresh pair of shades with a drink in your hand while a cool wind blows.
These old HBO intros/bumpers are AWESOME! When these came out, my parents had an old Betamax to record the movies with. When the Beta tapes were converted to VHS, the intros/bumpers were left out. Thanks a million for posting these salchli!!!!
I remember this bumper quite well. I also remember when HBO went 24 hours on the weekends. We used to stay up all night to watch a movie that came on at 4am! And we were thankful for it:) You damn kids are spoiled with all your Youflix and VCR's!
It's funny because I was born in 1981, September 13th to be exact. So obviously I wasn't aware of HBO, then. However, I became fully aware of the channel itself and its stellar bumpers in ‘86 and ‘87, and boy was I hooked on them! I think that's why I enjoy watching earlier bumpers from the ‘70s up until ‘85. Love it!
Mom didn't get cable till Summer of 82 right at the end of Summer, I remember it well, she got HBO with Cinemax , and I learned how to read by reading the TV Guide every month, was only 6 yrs old, HBO and Cinemax taught me more than any adult ever did, I was never told I couldn't watch this or that either, back then you only had 3 or 4 times to catch a movie during the month as they didn't play the same movie 4 times a day, week after week, you actually got more variety back then than now
I was born that time! September 21 1981, pretty cool to see what HBO was doing when I was born. I miss those days, my dad used a "box" to unscramble HBO and Showtime and everything had fake wood paneling!
Oh how this makes my heart hurt!! The 80's: when phones had chords, computer screens were green, you needed a quarter to play a video game, and America was still America.
I want to say it was right toward the end of the year in 1981 when they went full time 24 hours. It was considered kind of a big deal at the time, since most broadcast stations still went off the air for at least a little while back then.
I was born in 88 so I've got not reason to be nostalgic over this or anything, but these things are just enjoyable to watch. Totally a time I wish I could have experienced.
September 1981 was the time HBO was on the air 24 hours on weekends, while the network signed off Mondays thru Fridays. But that was about to change three months later, when HBO began staying on the air 24/7
I had just started kindergarten around the same time of this ad! LOL! My parents got HBO, Showtime and The Movie Channel (whch I think at the time was called Spotlight) sometime in '81 or '82. They didn't really censor what I watched, so I got to see all the good scary movies, but I also remember watching shows like Fraggle Rock! I still remember the Cable "BOX" we had that had the wood panelling. We thoguht it was so cool to watch TV with no commercials! How I miss those days. :-(
HBO first broadcast to limited areas of the Mid-Atlantic on November 8, 1972. It first uplinked to satellite, and became a national service on September 30, 1975, the night of the famous "Thrilla in Manila" boxing match, which became the first program that HBO broadcast from coast to coast. 24 hours on weekends began in September of '81, and 24/7 broadcasts began on December 28, 1981. I think they did this to celebrate 10 years of service. How 'bout some more beans, Mr. Taggert?
to tvcommercialman: Nobody was as sleep deprieved back then.Thats probably why there wasnt so much obesity in 1981. they say there is a link btwn sleep and overweightness. With youtube, dailymotion, facebook, twitter, direct tv, late night jobs ,work deadlines, and other things nobody can sleep like they used to.Oh yeah more light pollution at night probably has an effect too
Right on, that's why i like it too, it's derived from jazz fusion of that era. They used the same phaser effect on a Rhodes Electric Piano that Steely Dan also used, which adds to the similarity in sound.
There's something about the period 1977-1984 that just seems in retrospect to have been an "interregnum" of straight-up debauchery between the 70s and 80s. You can hear it, see it, sense it in all the media of the day. And since during that time I was only a child whose name wasn't Drew Barrymore, the coke, top-shelf liquor and entry into Studio 54 wasn't in the cards. Alas.
@mangrum876, I myself was born in 1988, seven years after that HBO promo/intro air'd. I've been watchin' HBO since da early 1990s ('92 or '93 @ da least).
or a 12 button remote, hard wired into the cable box, and was only 6' long. 12 buttons, 4 positions (off) (2-13) (14-26) (27-38). and Nick ran only from 8am-8pm. and some channels doubled up (used a channel that was off the air).
They should have kept reading the parental guidance warnings aloud. That would help remind parents when their children were watching something they shouldn't have been.
@schwarrow one until the early 90s but they really didn't expanded until the mid-late 90s. I loved HBO back in the 80s their boxing coverage was second to none.
At 0:22. WOW, wrap your head around the idea of, “NOW 24HRS on the weekend.” on *The Tube. *The Tube~Merriam-Webster definition (on-line) is now the *4th definition down, with sub-definition!!! *b)Cathode-Ray Tube *c)Television
@southport97 We can thank the Internet and News media for that. I'm accused of "living in the past", but it's a comfort zone for me............and it works.
So what did they show on the weekdays when HBO wasn't on the air? Was it like in Poltergeist, where they played the national anthem or something, and then you just got static for the rest of the night?
Back in the early 80's, HBO was only on 12 hours during the day, and they had just gone to 24 hour programming during weekends. If you turned on HBO between 1:30am and 12 noon you either saw a rainbow test patter or nothing but snow static.
actually you would see a scrolling schedule of that days coming programming as well as for that week. They did have a "goodnight" sign off they would run before they went off the air. I used to like to go to bed after seeing that. It was like the sign off of my day.... I was 11

Chris Akridge nothing, your cable company would cover the channel with computer generated news stories and weather. It ran until about an hour before the channel signed back on then you would see a scroll of the day programming and other features coming soon
VINTAGE HBO GUIDES GROUP on FACEBOOK! March of 1978, HBO was installed on the enormous 27 inch Zenith Color TV in what was lovingly called, the “rec” room, of my family home in Green Brook, NJ. From that point one I became obsessed with two things. Cable TV and HBO Guides! Vintage HBO Guides on Facebook already has about 15 complete guides and grows bigger every day...check it out!
44excalibur No, I going by this intro which is 1981. Also, the 1981 intro continued to be used until September 19, 1982. The "Space" intro for HBO didn't debuted around this time until September 20, 1982.
You can tell these were the days before people copying movies from their VCR, because there is no Warning about how this content is copywrite protected and you will get fined and put in prison... blah blahh blah.
I love the vibes of this bumper its like a summer sunset with palm trees with a fresh pair of shades with a drink in your hand while a cool wind blows.
Did you need a moment alone? ;)

After reading that, I certainly do.

+pinballshawn and get off my lawn
+Orson Durkin and pinballshawn stop saying mean things about kids are like today! Would you like it if a kid was like this to you?!
true.. there were things we had that we thought were so cool when we were kids that the ones before us didn't have.
You can tell just from these old intros alone that life back then was so much more laid back.
It's funny because I was born in 1981, September 13th to be exact. So obviously I wasn't aware of HBO, then. Yup, I remember when HBO only had R rated movies at night. Good times.
👍

This takes me back. Much better days. Thanks!

I feel like I am back in junior high school when I see these
I was born in 82, so I guess that's why I've never seen this before. I still love it though. Nothing tops the 80s!
I want to say it was right toward the end of the year in 1981 when they went full time 24 hours. It was considered kind of a big deal at the time, since most broadcast stations still went off the air for at least a little while back then.
40 years ago, wow. Loved when the announcer said, "Now 24 hours on weekends."
I was born in 88 so I've got not reason to be nostalgic over this or anything, but these things are just enjoyable to watch. Totally a time I wish I could have experienced.
Man, I want to watch Blazing Saddles now...
Davethe3rd blazing saddles is one of those movies i get occasional hankerings for as if they're food, if that makes sense.
Davethe3rd Blazing Saddles was the first Mel Brooks movie I ever saw. I was 7 years old at the time and I loved it!
Robert KC Cornell Is the WB Distribution logo is from Blazing Saddles
Logos, Films, TV Series, Video Games Man no
Did You Know That Kids Or Teens Would Watch The T.V. Edited Version Of The Film Due To The Profanity That Was Used In The Film.
I remember HBO used come at night before it goes 24 hours a day,7 days a week back in 1982
September 1981 was the time HBO was on the air 24 hours on weekends, while the network signed off Mondays thru Fridays.

Alas.
I agree, but I'd go 1979-1984. 1977-1978 was still the disco era, lots of debauchery then just as much as 1968-1976.
September 14, 2018 12:12 am
Man I miss those days....
I remember that HBO was not a 24/7 operation until January 1982.
the music at 0:28 is in a jazz fusion style of the late 70's / early 80's...LOVE IT
Yes. Their typical schedule was sign on at 3PM; sign off at 12AM. Yes, they did sign off on Sundays.
(born September 17, 1981)
DaiamondoRobotto well do you have subscribed HBO? I do have HBO but later it got removed. Now cable s-cks as s-t.
You know, back then cable TV, Night Flight, and MTV was magic to me. I so miss the 80s
@mangrum876, I myself was born in 1988, seven years after that HBO promo/intro air'd. I've been watchin' HBO since da early 1990s ('92 or '93 @ da least).
This is about the first time we got Hbo; thought it was really special to see movies & stuff w/o commercials...
That was the month we got cable at my house

Those golden bricks at 0:34 look like McDonald's French fries flying towards the camera.
I remember the very 1st time I saw "Blazing Saddles", was on HBO. Good times. I remember laughing, though most of the movie!!
Now 24 Hours on weekends!! Woohoo!
0:26 -47 ...This is what nirvana must feel like.
EDIT;
Alternatively, press the *4* key.
0:26 is track 1 on Midnight Television's album.
Its mind rattling that there was a time where cable wasn't 24 hours
That started a year later, September 1982.
They should have kept reading the parental guidance warnings aloud. That would help remind parents when their children were watching something they shouldn't have been.
Good old HBO back when it was still on G1-23. Kinda miss the old big huge C-Band dish
@schwarrow one until the early 90s but they really didn't expanded until the mid-late 90s. I loved HBO back in the 80s their boxing coverage was second to none.

I saw this as it happened on tv! Yahoo!
Correct, as of Sept 1981. By January 1982 HBO was 24 Hours.
Back when you didn't need cable to get good programming
24 hours only on the weekends........Simple, good times..........
"HBO will show this feature only at night"... hearing this as a child made me feel like I was doing something horribly wrong
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the music. Makes me think of Steely Dan for some reason!
Now 24 hours on weekends! So that kids could have a reason to sleep in on Saturday!
“You’re watching HBO, now 24 hours on weekends.”
Well in our Asian feeds it is 24 hours instantly.
@southport97 We can thank the Internet and News media for that. I'm accused of "living in the past", but it's a comfort zone for me............and it works.

It was only on from 12PM to 1AM
I know that :) But if you turned the channel to HBO at 1:30am, what did you see?
Usually the rainbow test pattern

Wow, i can just barely remember this intro. I was about 7, so my memory's a bit fuzzy then.
September 1989
Just curious as to who was the V/O at this time for HBO.
I miss Big W.
@Simon5005 You're right. Today people are more mean-spirited, paranoid and suspicious of each other. Sad.
Does this mean that HBO still signed off on weeknights? Also, did HBO sign off on Sunday nights?
0:34 Pause it and looks like a Trapper Keeper design.
Wow, I didn't even known that HBO existed in the 80's.
They've been around since 1972.
@salchli So what network aired during the 15 hours that HBO was not on? Or was it just color bars/generic music, etc?
Chris Akridge nothing, your cable company would cover the channel with computer generated news stories and weather. It ran until about an hour before the channel signed back on then you would see a scroll of the day programming and other features coming soon
and the 'The Shining' played.

What's this "HBO Feature Movie" intro? Isn't this when HBO began using the "HBO In Space" intro?
HBO began using the "Space Intro" in late 1981. This was HBO's old intro that got retired in mid-1981.
44excalibur
No, I going by this intro which is 1981. Also, the 1981 intro continued to be used until September 19, 1982. The "Space" intro for HBO didn't debuted around this time until September 20, 1982.
But not on Friady or Saturday?
GOOLD OLD TIMES
I did not subscribe to cable until 1982. (Uh-uh, don't figure out my age, LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL).
Have a safe holiday.
Juliaflo me neither I was 5 yrs old. sheesh I'm old.
1981 is when my dad put cable in our house. I remember how cool it felt to have cable and be able to watch all kinds of movies
O_o so on my birth year this was HBO?
I'd say you boys have had enough!
Las intros de HBO estan en ingles.
Just One.
Cool

"now 24 hours on weekends" lol
Кто смотрит в 2012 палец вверх!
Seemed like every movie after 10pm had more female nudity in it back then. Not as much now in the 2010's
lol the evolution of hbo inros
My God, so many cheesy colorful early 80's TV graphics. Evidently the best time to watch HBO was between movies smoking some pot.
vaporwave anyone ?
"Where tha white women at?!!" Haha. Great movie.
@lukenuetzmann You miss less than 24 hour HBO days. Yeah, I miss the Nazis too- no wait! I don't!!
