Dear Tim, although you may not see this, I'm gonna say it anyways just for good measure...
I'm an aspiring actor/ filmmaker, but I'm lazy as all shit, and procrastinate unlike any other, spent the past few years doing a lot of heavy thinking, on what I wanted to do, how I'd do it, and what if it didn't work out?
Recently I've been watching maybe a little too much TomSka, which has filled a few ideas into my head, but then again, procrastinating. I saw this video in the sidebar and decided to check it out, as I always seems to be able to help other people's problems better than mine. (Love, school, gaming, and well, creativity, you name it)
Then I kinda... forgot about your existence for a few weeks, but shortly after I had had a horrible day at work, and I( needed some inspirational cheering. Tom couldn't fill it for me, but then I remembered you, and this video, and I watched it again, and has since then watched it plenty of times since then.... and bloody hell, you've done it.
You have been one of the biggest inspirations so far, and you have not convinced me to throw all my creativity and ideas into somewhere, and I decided to write a story which I will start as soon as I finish this comment.
Well.... long story short, Thank you, you are the realization and the inspiration I needed, fuck procrastinating, and holy shit, god bless you.
Yet again, thank you, from an inspired fan :)

This was really fucking good, Tim. The slow, extended camera pans (I'm probably using all the wrong words here but oh well) were kind of like the ones used to film stage shows and ballets - they made the whole thing a little more dramatic. And the last bit with the click of the pen? Lovely.

This has helped me deal with writer's block better than anything else. I write every single day, and have done so for five years. It's exhausting. And sometimes I notice that I'm slipping. I find that instead of two hours, or three, or four, I'm spending thirty minutes a day trying to write. Maybe twenty. And then I give up for the day, like trying to create matters, like it counts on some cosmic scale and gives me license to call myself a writer even if I barely actually *write*.
But now, whenever I notice that happening, I come to this video. And since its posting I've watched it again and again and again.
You've helped me write, which is the most important thing that I do, that I will ever do. So thank you. It means a lot.

Like you said, you can't put someone's suffering on a scale of 1 to 10. Because it might not be that bad in the whole scheme of things, but right now, at this very moment, it is the worst possible thing that could have happened. You can't judge someone because what they're crying over seems really small to you. For all anyone knows, that 'small' thing is what broke the camel's back. That 'small' thing is what made that person decide that maybe, just maybe, this wasn't worth it. You never know what anyone is going through, and those words that you think are comforting, those words of "It's no big deal. It's no reason to cry." may be the very things that are causing someone to doubt everything they have ever done or are doing, and feeling that their own emotions are not validated because someone has it worse. Everyone deserves to feel the way that they do, and no one has the right to put them down for their emotions.

    • @akuliak
      @akuliak 7 років тому +17

“To draw an analogy: a man's suffering is similar to the behavior of a gas. If a certain quantity of gas is pumped into an empty chamber, it will fill the chamber completely and evenly, no matter how big the chamber. Thus suffering completely fills the human soul and conscious mind, no matter whether the suffering is great or little. Therefore the "size" of human suffering is absolutely relative.”

Well... I guess I just have one thing to say Tim. Thank you.
Every day I've woken up with the want to get something done, but never actually gotten around to doing it. I'd constantly question my actions, coming up with possible reasons and excuses as to why it was I was being unproductive. I started seeing a therapist about it too, in hope that I'd get answers to these questions that have been plaguing my mind for over 6 months now, yet nothing ever really happened.
But just moments after I watched this video, I felt the drive again. Right now I am currently drafting a project I've been telling myself I was going to work on for the last 2 months. I know that this may just be a temporary feeling, because let's face it, this kind of creative block doesn't simply go away after one huge, life-changing moment. However, I'm going to keep returning to this, if not to bring back the drive again, then to remind of what's truly important about how I face this issue.
There have been few things I've ever seen that have hit me so close to home with an issue that has been torturing me for so long. I was never the kind to get overly-dramatic over something like this, yet this video moved me... and more importantly, it inspired me.
For that, I simply have to say thank you.

This video is five years old at this point, so it's unlikely that +TimH Films or anyone else will see this, but I just want to say that this video was incredible. I'm a 20 year old college student, watching this at 4 in the morning because I can't sleep. I can't sleep because I'm stuck in a depressive funk, scared that I'm going to get kicked out of college after only my first year here, and I have _no_ idea what I'm going to do or what my future is if that happens. I came to this video looking for another one of Tim's funny sketches, trying to distract myself from the grim reality of my situation. Instead I found this, a video that pulled on my heartstrings and motivation, dragging it down through most of the video, but pulling it back up at the end. I know that logically, this video doesn't solve any of the problems in my life, and that the positive mood boost it gave to me will no doubt fade, but for now, I'm more ready to deal with what's bothering me than I have been in a long time. So for that, Tim, I thank you.

I discovered you from a TomSka video -- well... a DarkSquidge one (My Public Breakup) -- and I am so damn happy I did. Since then (which wasn't long ago... it was literally a couple hours beck), I've seen every video you have on your "Best of TimH" playlist. You are seriously underrated, and you don't just play video games while screaming, or point out the internet's stupid grammar (although jacksfilms is pretty awesome). Heck you didn't even make one inspirational video that's seriously got me thinking. YOU MADE A TON OF THEM. Since I've began to watch your videos, I've managed to figure out so much. I've been touched in ways unimaginable (okay, that sounds horrible), but the point is: don't ever stop. Because you sum up what UA-cam is all about :)

Wow, this really hit home. I just started my first year of university and have been in going in and out of existential crisis mode. I want to do film but I go to a science and technology focused university. For a while I felt extremely trapped an unable to create but lately I've realized that you just have to go for it. You just have to dive in and do it. There is no excuse to not do what you love.
If I ever find myself going back into the mindset that I just can't create because I don't have time or don't feel like it is going to be worth it, I am going to come back to this video. Thank you so much for making this.

WATCH NOW -- DO IT-- NOW --THIS IS BRILLIANT.
If I could pick one creative piece or video (which would be hard but I think I can) I pick this one to describe how I've been feeling creatively. Even the end bit. My story is a bit different and I thought I didn't want to be a creative person for a living but I do and watching this video inspires. You can relate to it. Then there is the bit where he explains self doubt and where your thoughts stumble into the idea of "My problems aren't important." I loved that part. It's so accurate to how a visual thinks. It really depicts what it feels like.
ughh.. now I feel my words don't do it justice but I do want to post them anyhow. Thank you Tim for this great short film of what creative block is like. Thank you for making me feel inspired and for putting your work out there. FUCK YEAH LETS DO IT!

A creative way to snap people out of procrastination. I've had this video in my "Watch Later" list and I had a feeling it would be like this, but I didn't want to hear it. But I finally watched it today because I'm having a "Make Lists" day...if you know what I mean.
Many people talk about procrastination and the 20's dilemma, but you put it beautifully. Thanks for the video. I really needed it. :)
And for the record, I'm willing to wait for another brilliant piece by you.

So if you did this video instead of procrastinating ... does that mean that you overcame procrastination?
Or how about this: if you did this video based on your procrastination experience, it means that all the procrastination in your lifetime was actually useful, but if it was useful then it has never been procrastination O:

I asked my creative writing teacher to show this in class. After we watched it, I swear it felt like a spark had lit up every single person, inspiring them to write with ambition instead of for a grade. Thanks for being that spark, Tim. :)

This is probably the least helpful video watch listen to whilst doing revision for my science GCSEs. Although I now have an amazing idea for.... Back to the science. :(

Is it just me or is Tim like the perfect writer? He can create comedic videos, but then he tackles hard stuff and turns it into a motivation video.

I must also say that I really like your style of video making. Your stuff is well-paced and the way you alternate sketchy bits and serious bits works very well.

Okay so my comment has two sides: first one is the technical one about the actual video. I'm so impressed with the camerawork and the lighting - there's just something about how this was made and directed that I am absolutely in love with. But since I'm not someone who actually knows anything besides how to turn on a camera (that's debatable), this is unfortunately the extent of my technical feedback. Now onto the content. This video really hit home for me, as I've been struggling with a creative crisis like yours for months - except for art. I did art on tumblr and not to brag, but I did get a big (for me) audience for them. But I also did it in college as an A-Level. After a few months of constant creative 'flow' - hundreds of images being produced, painted, sketched - a constant stream of ideas that got put down on paper and finished I just stopped. I couldn't pick up my tablet pen or a paint brush. I stopped posting my art on tumblr and got behind on my art coursework. I got my teachers and friends concerned. I couldn't explain why - it was just this block in my mind. Because art was no longer an escape for me. It was my everything and it was too much. It took me from end of November until now to slowly bring back my creativity - and not fully. My tumblr is rarely used for posting art, but at least I managed to get back on track with coursework. But this video really helped me - I've sat here writing this comment and just releasing my thoughts as I reflect back on what you said. And you know what Tim? There is nothing stopping me. I CAN do this. Thank you for helping me realise that I was not the only one struggling with this problem. Also great to see you back again on UA-cam, really missed your videos recently. Sorry for the long comment as well, I tend to go off on tangents >.>
