3 ways to reduce your screen time | Improve Mental & Physical Health |

- Though a clinical diagnosis hasn’t been formally made yet, the concept of phone addiction is being thoroughly researched because there’s a lot of evidence that there are serious consequences to prolonged screen time. Not only can it affect your mental health, but it may also affect your physical health as well.
The dopamine consumption loop theory has been proposed as the underlying mechanism that causes people to frequently check their phone.
The theory suggests that notifications from our phones cause little bursts of dopamine to be sent to our brains. And when we put our phones down, we naturally miss that feeling that the dopamine gave us, making us look forward to refreshing our screen and getting some more.
According to a research article published in 2015, adolescents who reported higher screen time on their devices were more likely to have poorer mental health and academic outcomes. Most reported mental health symptoms were associated with low self-esteem and depressive symptoms.
In 2019, the American Cardiologist Association found people who used their phones for more than 5 hours a day were more likely to have a diet consisting of sugary drinks and fast food. Additionally, there is a correlation with increased weight gain due to the sedentary activity of being on your phone. Unfortunately, a sedentary lifestyle can lead to premature death due to the development of diabetes or heart disease.
A study in 2019 found that 1 in 5 8 year olds have a smartphone, which is an 11% increase from 2015. So now imagine how toddlers will be when gen z becomes parents? The earlier kids are receiving phones and the more usage on these devices can lead to an even more dependence on technology.
3 Tips to consider to reduce your screen time and improve your digital wellness:
1. Turn off notifications/delete apps.
2. Set a weekly/daily screen time limit.
3. Replace screen time with a hobby that does not require a smart phone.

Welcome to the squad Psych2Go! It’s truly an honor!
Wow Psych2Go, I didn't expect to see you here!
My average screen time on a school day is 5 hours and 58 minutes but on the weekends it’s 11 hours and 50 minutes 😬
Gotta start somewhere! We should do some sort of a 30 day detox challenge and come back and see how everyone did
@@reallifepsych3309 I’ll start tomorrow that way when February ends it will officially be 30 days 😁
@@SimpliAmy sounds good!

I hope these insights help. Thank you for your feedback and if you have any other topics you think should be covered, let me know.
Will do!
I think I subbed to you from Ana's channel. I really like this new psych movement on UA-cam where the scientific research is presented in a more casual, informal way that doesn't make me feel like the world is crashing down. Thanks for the video and keep up the great work!
Exactly why I started the channel! I’m glad you like this video, and if you have any topic suggestions, please feel free to throw one out there!

wow thanks for this!! Being a 17 year old it scared me when u said that teens who used their smartphones for most of the time are more likely to do poor in in their mental health and academics, this info is more than enough for me to keep those away. l would want to see more videos on phone and social media addiction. thanks again
Will definitely make one on social media specifically very soon. new episodes every Sunday!

I’ve always thought this little thing was bad for us. Love how much research you’re citing here. Really interesting and very scary stuff. Love the tips. Screentime Limit to the rescue. Don’t want to be the person checking phone while titanic is sinking 😂😂
Thank you for being the first person to acknowledge my Titanic comment. I was internalizing crickets on that one haha

Greetings from England. On this kinda topic type in the search bar above the following title....'Addicted to a screen'
greetings!
@@reallifepsych3309 Helloooo!
Greetings from England.. I go on my phone too much if I'm honest. I made something about society and screens. To see it just type in the search bar above the following title.... Addicted to a screen
Awesome, will definitely check it out!
@@reallifepsych3309 Please do and feel free to leave a comment on there
Iam a teen and i am not even on social media.....
But its still quiet difficult for me to stay away from my phone .... online classes and all study material of mine are on phone, tho i bought my phone last year only....
👍
🤙
My Screen Time was 3.58h but at a workday which still seems quite a lot still!
it seems like a lot, but it’s actually only a smudge above average. at least you had the courage to look!
Did you mean when Gen Z become parents? Even the tail end of Gen X beginning of millennials have grown children and some grandchildren, while gen Z has been going to prom the last week or so.
Otherwise, great episode, and I look forward to seeing more, as part of my screen time allowance if I decide to go that route. 🙂
What do you do if you just listen to music? I'm an artist and I keep the phone on while I draw so I can listen to music. I use both Pandora and UA-cam for this.
This is my personal opinion, but I actually think that the major contributor to increased depression and anxiety is the consumption of media, especially social media. I imagine music would bring you peace and calmness.
I’ll definitely do a video on just social media alone
@@reallifepsych3309 thanks for the fast reply! I don't have Facebook, I got rid of it about 4 months ago and honestly everything feels so much better. I have Instagram but only use it to post art and then log out. I don't even have the app.
@@Diego-Designs i think that’s the way to go
SCREEN TIME - ABOUT 9 HOURS.
Mostly wasting time on phone...
And I'm not on ANY social media platform.
Thank you for even having the courage to check it. Technology really is a gift and a curse!
Mine is 7 hours 12 minutes >_< I'm removing reddit, Instagram and Twitter rn Frick it
Twitter and instagram for sure are my most used apps! I deleted them, but I’m guilty of still checking them often. I love Reddit, but I have better control on that one.
Also if you have any future video suggestions, let me know.
@@reallifepsych3309 gosh ikr I've been overly addicted to reddit recently and maybe ill be more productive now haha
@@reallifepsych3309 id love it if you made a video on how to learn self love cuz I've been tried to appreciate myself more but years of self depreciation make it so hard >_
@@harshithdogga5400 that’s an important topic I’ve received a few requests on already. will definitely put it on my to do list. my videos are more research based though, so it’ll still take some time
😩😑
No offense but this made me feel very judged compared to other videos
Im thinking about buying a dumb phone flip phone, and to see the internet and use maps for gps usage I'll be buying a mini iPad and my iPhone ill be using it as my iPod use. Why i'm I doing this? will I think we are being being lie that we need one device to do all 3 or etc....I mention, no wonder battery's die quickly and have to replace or buy a new smartphone. Smartphone's are not like Tv's, playstation consoles and etc...... That's why I'm doing it old school, that way if someone calls I can be using my flip phone at the same time being on the internet with my iPad and both devices can last longer and even my iPhone as my ipod. I'm thinking of doing this very soon. 😃
