Do you enjoy using a telephoto for landscape photography? Why or why not?
I often find myself using telephoto more than wide angle for landscapes!
Yes, as the lighting is not always good for the big picture while some magical moments usually happen in small areas
Never used much until the last few months. I use my superzoom at the telephoto range for the purpose and the results are great. With a wide-angle sometimes you do not have many choices for the foreground, & background but using a telephoto really helps a lot in such a situation.
Agree with every one of these tips Joshua! I started out with only a telephoto lens (80mm) and it's still my favourite focal length. Most of the time I feel more connected to small scenes rather than large vistas anyways so I tend to stick to longer focal lengths.
My most used landscape lens was the 70-200 followed by a 16-35; Now shooting with a 100-500 - enjoying that even more!
Being a "weekend" photographer I am not always in great light/great location situations. Many of my large vista (wide angle) photos were becoming fairly stale due to non-ideal light or weather. One thing led to another and I found myself primarily using my 70-200 to pick out snippets of the landscape that happened to be in the light I was looking for.
I totally relate to this. I need to start utilizing my long lens more.
I started photography with my smartphone and the inability to zoom in was a constant irritation. I've had my DSLR for almost a year and the ability to zoom with my telephoto lens has led to some really interesting and unexpectedly good shots. Absolutely worth the carrying weight on hikes.
I’ve come back to this video and several of your other ones as great refreshers before a trip just to get more focus. As I haven’t seen any new videos for quite some I just hope you’re doing well health wise, maybe dealing with ‘photo burn out’ or whatever. Just wanted you to know how much you’ve favorably impacted my photography, and many others I’m sure, as we start 2023. Be well, Josh, and we hope to see/hear from you soon!
My personal favorite lens for landscapes ever
Some excellent advice here and even better photos to back it up. Thanks very much for an informative and engaging video!
Sooo much information here! With amazing examples and explanations! Straight to the point. Clear and concise. Great work! Not just a lot of fluff and slo mo b-roll which is so prevalent on UA-cam now days...
Terrific video. Really dig the photos.
Awesome video, thanks for all the great tips!
Thanks for another great lesson; you break it down to measurable steps that can be remembered and used out in the field. I have been on the fence to purchase a new 70 - 200 but now I think I am jumping off fast and heading to B&H. I have been using my 100 - 400 but not effectively or purposefully for landscapes. Thanks Josh!
Great tutorial. Great work. Thanx for sharing.
THANK YOU!
Very helpful information... thanks !
I’ve been a longterm admirer of your videos and glad that you have returned full throttle - thx for another informative quality video!
Oh forgot to say - 100-400mm GM
Thank you so much, Allen!
Another great video! Tomorrow I will try them out!
Absolutely fantastic photography. Regards
Very informative, thank you.
Great video... & tips....many thanks..
I really appreciate this tutorial, as I'm currently transitioning from macro to telephoto landscape photography for winter. Also, that eclipse shot is stunning and elegant. Nice work!
Thank u Joshua for this great video
great thoughts, thanks
VERY good! TY!!!
Direct tips. Very prácticas. Thanks a l😊t
I’ll be digging out my 55-200 and giving it a try thanks Josh 👍🏻
Wonderful video thanks for sharing
Good one. Thanks, Joshua.
Beautiful photos dude and thanks for the tips. I only shoot primes and have an 85mm lens, so I hope I can get some nice landscapes with it. So far I have only used it for portraits. Cheers.
Love that room in your house.
Holy crap it has been so awesome having you back in my youtube feed, I've been subscribed to you since I was 13! Was wondering if you could do a video about shooting in dull grey cloud conditions? I'm living in a town right now where that is the most common light throughout the winter and although it's awesome for skiing it's less so for photography. Thanks for the great videos!!
Josh getting into his stride once more
cheers 👌👌
Great video! I have been enjoying all your videos. I see you spent some time this summer in the Sierra’s. We were there also but unfortunately the fires started about the 4th day there. I did get some great shots though. I used the Nikon D850 with a 28-300 mm, a 20mm and my nifty 50.
Great video. 👍
Fantastic stuff, JC!! I'll be sure to apply your tips on my 70-200mm during my upcoming trip . I always look forward to your videos - thanks!!!
Right on! Hope you get some great shots.
I have been to Milford sound and it is one helluva place. like your work. subed
Those were some of the best tips I've seen for a long time, because they were not just recycling the same-ol', same s-ol'. Cheers. Excellent vlog.
Cheers, Martin!
absolutely priceless advice Joshua! I use 70-300mm in my landscape photography and always find it unique and artistic due to the points you have indicated. thank YOU!
My pleasure, Gaby! Happy to have you on the telephoto train.
great video
I'm starting to learn photography and I found your video very instructive, thank you!
Booyah!
Great tips and beautiful photos. I can't understand why 4 people have a thumbs down! These must be professionals who go from channel to channel clicking the thumbs down icon. I enjoy your work and particularly enjoy your accompanying, straightforward explanations.
Hey there, I was wondering on the images you showed for layering examples if you were focus stacking or what kind of settings you were using if not. Love your work by the way! I’ve been bingeing
your videos and jonsin for a photography field trip.

I love my 100-400....couldn’t imagine not taking it on every trip...😱😱
I'm waiting for the 100-400S Nikon lens! Would love that one as well for my landscapes!
Nothing worse than leaving the tele behind for weight reasons, then getting on location and seeing the perfect tele shot!
I'm pretty keen on that one too.
Great tips Joshua. Oh was that Sarah Lyndsay up there love her work?
70-200 rocks for so many reasons...I'm putting together a vid on it in the coming days...concentrating more on action sports though. Great vid!
Totally rocks! Thanks, and good luck with your vid.
Your Video is such a relief.
I'm so sick of ultrawide images of waterfalls with massively blurred water - been there - done that...
Glad you enjoyed it. I don't think there's anything wrong with shots like that. But there are so many other possibilities and options!
Joshua, great photos! Recently found and subscribed to your channel and enjoy the videos and especially pleased that so many are in beautiful CA. Question, I'm starting new with the Z system after a long break and getting the 70-200mm 2.8. They offer a very sharp 1.4x (f4) tele and a 2x (5.6). I've heard the 2x can be a little soft in the 300-400 range, and I'm tempted to just get the 1.4x and crop if needed. For the majority of telephoto shots, how critical is a length beyond 300 for landscape and general photography? I might see some wildlife when I travel but it isn't my main goal for heading out. Thanks and appreciate any advice or suggestions.
I mostly use telephoto for landscape! Wide angle is cool and stuff but I don't like negative space all that much, i like to really fill the frame with the subject.
Also, the way you say dolomites kills me.
Great tips...looks like I need to put my 70-200 to better use when out in the field. Question, is the photo of sara and lone pine peak a composite?
8:30 So did you use the 2 or the 10 second timer there? Joking aside that was a really good video Joshua, I probably use my 70-300 more than any other lens although I've recently rediscovered my nifty fifty for woodland shots, the narrow f/1.8 can really help with separation.
Sweet as
Will these same tips work for us weekend photographers who cannot afford to spend $1400 on a single lens?
Yes, as long as you can fly to places like the United Arab Emirates and Yellowstone Park on a regular basis.
the selfportrait shot, how did you make that one?
Why was "good light" last in the list?
I bet that Josh will not heart this comment
I am sorry but the one with Sarah look fake like it was done in editing
That dress is goofy
You are wrong on so many levels.
