This a very interesting video. I like the way it explains the process for language acquisition, equal content and instructional strategies. The information is very clear and important to teach ESL/ELL. I would recommend this video to other teachers so they can also apply the techniques and strategies in the classroom. I found very interesting how culture studies can help the student in the acquisition of the language.

Thanks for the wonderful video. It has helped me better understand the language acquisition of certain Ukrainian refugee kids I know. Especially that the silent phase is a normal and not necessarily bad thing is good to know. I actually went through that too a long time ago.

Great video. May suggest two themes? i'd suggest "teaching adults" known as andragogia and teaching EFL as it is very different than ESL. For example, I teach english in Brasil, so all my students speak portuguese and have the same cultural background.

    Hello Teachings in Education,
My name is Amber Johnson and I am part of Mary Lou Teachers College at ASU. I am currently studying ELL learners that are Spanish speaking, I am looking for three instructional strategies that will be beneficial to their vocabulary development. I am in a class that goes into research for literacy reviews.
What can the parent do at home to benefit their Spanish-speaking EL learner? Do you think that they should only speak Spanish or use both English and Spanish?
How can they support their EL learner if they only know Spanish?
What three instructional strategies can be used at home for EL learners to benefit their language development??

One teacher I saw teaching English made the boys do 5 pushups and the girls do 10 jumping jacks if they forgot something from the day before. Since, Thailand has a no fail system, he wanted the students to have some skin in the game and if they don't want to learn, at least they will be strong for physically demanding jobs when they enter the workforce. ;p

3:50 Poor way to title that slide, BICS and CALP should be switched. The way the acronyms are arranged make it seem as if BICS is for content language and CALP is for social language. This is very confusing and should be addressed. Otherwise, a very informative video. Thank you.

Teaching English-language learners (ELLs) can be both exciting and challenging for educators across the country. As the number of ELLs continues to grow, teachers are constantly seeking effective strategies to support their language and literacy development, as well as their academic success. Fortunately, there are numerous resources available to help educators navigate the complexities of teaching ELLs in the classroom.
One key aspect of teaching ELLs is building their confidence and creating a welcoming environment where they feel valued and included. Establishing positive relationships with ELL students is crucial to their overall success. Teachers can use a variety of strategies, such as sentence starters and Total Physical Response (TPR), to engage students and encourage their participation in classroom activities and lessons.
Additionally, supporting ELLs in mastering academic language and vocabulary is essential. Teachers can identify the most useful language and vocabulary words to teach and provide students with strategies and resources to enhance their language skills. This can include activities like sentence framing and using visuals to help ELLs comprehend and communicate effectively in English.
    learnenglish100.com/teaching-ell-students/
Reading and writing instruction for ELLs may require tailored approaches to address their diverse needs. Some students may already be fluent readers and writers in their native language, while others may have limited or no prior literacy instruction. Teachers can implement grade-level strategies and incorporate the Common Core State Standards to teach advanced reading and writing skills. Differentiated instruction and informal assessments can be used to meet the varying language levels of ELLs in the classroom.
In order for ELLs to succeed academically, they need support in accessing grade-level content. Strategies can be employed to provide additional language support in subject areas like math, science, social studies, and language arts. This can include using visual aids, incorporating real-world examples, and encouraging collaborative learning.
Collaboration between schools and families is crucial in ensuring the success of ELLs, including those with special needs. By working together, schools and families can provide the necessary support and services to meet the unique needs of ELLs. Bilingual parent tips, classroom videos, and teacher interviews are valuable resources that can foster effective collaboration between schools and families.
Technology can play a significant role in supporting ELLs' learning experiences. Teachers can utilize multimedia tools and activities to engage ELLs and facilitate their language development. Managing technology resources effectively in school and at home is also important to ensure ELLs have equitable access to these tools.
ESL teachers have a significant role in schools and districts, and they can serve as advocates, leaders, and collaborators with their colleagues. They can leverage their unique expertise to provide support and guidance to teachers in various disciplines.
When working with ELLs, teachers should also consider their students' social, emotional, and academic needs. Students may have unique backgrounds and experiences, such as refugees, migrants, or unaccompanied children, which can impact their learning. It is essential for teachers to create a supportive and inclusive learning environment for all ELLs.
To further enhance their teaching practices, educators can explore recommended professional titles and access a rich library of video content. These resources provide valuable insights, research-based recommendations, and practical ideas for effective ELL instruction.
In conclusion, teaching ELLs requires a thoughtful and comprehensive approach. By implementing strategies such as sentence starters, Total Physical Response, and collaboration with families, educators can create a positive and nurturing classroom environment that supports the language and academic development of ELLs. Continued professional learning and access to resources are vital for teachers to effectively meet the needs of their ELL students and ensure their overall success.
