    Davie. That's a great looking fly. It may work even better with eyes made from that green/yellow monofilament line you use for eyes. Just a thought.

    A follow-up comment, Davie. I was so impressed by your tying, I copied it faithfully, and made quite a lot to use and give to friends. The one slight problem with the latex rubber band, is that it tends to deteriorate in the fly box. Easy enough to replace, of course. The fly certainly catches.

    Amazing once again.............. Thank you for all your videos and the time you put in to share them with everyone. ;-) My five year old nephew told me the other day, his two favorite things to do are baseball and tying flies..... He is doing so good, he's tied sixteen already. He asked me if I could get him the kid kit, so he could practice and get really good. I'm so proud of the little guy. Now I know what I have to get him for his birthday..... Best wishes, lindsay

    Davie,
    I would like to thank you for taking the time to upload these videos, they have taken me from a complete fishing/fly tying beginner to someone that can now tie my own flies (badly I'm sure but at least they are mine)
    Like others I has inspired my 8 year old now who not only fishes with me, but also sits for HOURS tying your patterns and of course his own "wacky" designs ;-)
    There is no better feeling than catching a fish on a fly you have tied yourself and we both have had fantastic success on all of your patterns, sometimes we were the only people catching and have now started giving out the names/links to your patterns for my fellow club fishermen so expect a glut of subscribers soon.
    So thank you again and please keep posting.
    One final thing if I may, the bleached pheasant tail I can't seem to find. Did you bleach them yourself ?
    If so could you tell me how please as this is the next fly my son and I want to tie.
    Many thanks
    Leon

      Hi Leon,
      Hearing how much you and your son are enjoying tying flies makes doing these videos a pleasure as this is the reason why I felt I had to pass on what I have learnt over the years as I still enjoy tying flies now as much as I did over 30 years ago and I'm sure you and your son will tye just as long if not maybe longer than me ...I buy the bleached Pheasant tail from a wholesale company here in the UK called Veniards they do have many companies that stock their materials around the world so I'll attach a link for you to search for a shop closest to you which I'm sure will be able to get you the tails...

    Hi Davie,
    Love this pattern!! I think this will work well here in Australia!!
    I'm liking the latex look for the body on these flies but was wondering if there is a good way to build it up for a fatter body like a cicada has. Would it be worth wrapping underneath it with something to bulk it out? I have An idea for a cicada with a body made using latex, with a flash and fine fibre wing mounted on the side rather than the top and a deer hair thorax to float it. Would love to see what you could come up with based on this idea?
    Cheers again for the inspiration.
    Colin

      @DavieMcPhail  6 років тому

      Hi Colin,
      I'm glad you liked the fly and I'm sure if you give it a go you will catch on it..I have tyed a couple of small emergers with the latex as it will help to get the body below the surface..It will certainly give you a nice Cicada body and worth a go, I have tyed Cicadas but I was using deer hair on the bodies much like a bomber for friends and they worked really for them..If you tye some let me know how you get on...

      Hi Ken,
      Use what you can find as I'm sure it wouldn't make any difference to the fly..I'm sorry I haven't had a lot of time to look into tying a streamer as I am now working for myself and I have to sort out a lot of paper work to get things going..I do plan on tying one of Carries flies though...

      @@DavieMcPhail Davie. An ad at the start is fine. A small price to pay for instruction from the Pantheon of three that comprise the Gods of fly tying. McPhail, Ord Clarke, and dear old Oliver. After fifty years of tyings that I thought were pretty good, the three of you have transformed my flies.

    Good day Davie, I was wondering if you ever bleach feathers. I use household bleach to remove fibers from ostrich and peacock to get quills,so I know that's too strong, but thought maybe peroxide or hair bleach may work. I have seen the videos of you dying feathers and didn't know if you bleached as well. Thanks

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  8 років тому

      Hi Jr Rose,
      I did once use peroxide to bleach some materials and didn't do a good job and ended up with a mess so I have never done it since though I have used normal bleach to remove the fine fibres from herl like yourself...If you know what you are doing though you can bleach materials and end up with some really nice feathers...

    Hi Davie, sorry to bother you! How wide was the latex you sliced?
    Love your work, the quality and the easily to follow tutorials are second to none!

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  10 років тому

      Hi Chris,
      You're not bothering me at all...I would say about 5mm to 6mm wide would be fine for this size of fly but after tying three or four flies you'll get used to working with the latex. When you stretch the latex it will reduce by about half it's width and length... I'm glad you enjoy the videos and that you find them easy to follow...

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  10 років тому

      Hi Jake Ray,
      It may last longer but to be honest as long as you tye it in nice and tight you shouldn't have any problems, but I would try the resin as well just to see if it fishes better...
      I use a Prepared Fly Tyers wax sold by a wholesale company called Veniards so any shop that stocks their materials should be able to help you...

    Hi Davie, again a beautiful tie. You're videos are always inspirational. Just wondered if you bleach your own feathers or do you buy them that way. If you do bleach them, does the same method work as foe peacock herl or are there special bleaches needed. I tie just for the pleasure and on a small scale and am off work at the mo undergoing chemo so I find myself at the vise al lot and dying and bleaching my own feathers and furs adds to the pleasure and gives me something to tsake my mind off things. Any advice gratefully accepted. I appreciate that you are a busy man and am always very grateful for your time and expertise. It is also lovely to hear how much you enjoy fishing your flies, also to me one of the great escapes. Was also wondering if there was a reason that you took down your nymph playlist? Thank you so much for the inspiration, pleasure and grat knowledge,
    Yours Karl.

      I'm sorry about the playlists as I felt that I had to redo them because I had forgotten most of what I had done and a new list and titles would help refresh as many had stopped being viewed..
