      Did Sanderson say specifically say the whole book would be 10 days? I assumed part of it would be those 10 days an last portion would be setting up the back half of the books.

    Hi, Asexual here. I think I can shed some light on the Jasnah/Hoid relationship. A lot of aces aren’t opposed to sex, it’s a spectrum just like anything else. Some aces (like me) are sex repulsed, but others are sex indifferent, (not opposed to sex but they don’t crave it/feel sexually attracted to people.) and finally there’s sex favorable aces, who enjoy sex but don’t feel sexual attraction. (Again, there’s a lot of subsets within these categories, but that’s the basic)
    I read Jasnah as sex indifferent, so she is willing to have sex but doesn’t feel a strong need for it.
    Hopefully this helps people understand better :)

      Hannah Herndon Greetings, Asexual! Thank you for taking a moment to clarify, as there are near as many variants of human sexuality as there are humans. It’s important to remember this as we spin through the void, and treat each other with respect and kindness. However, I could only image the frustration involved in navigating a world where Smashing Whats-Its is such a primary focus. Stay groovy, and always remember you have an “ace in he hole” joke that so many people can’t use. 👍🏼😎

    I was actually surprised y’all had some issues with Jasnah and her “choices”. Today’s society is way too obsessed with gender roles and I found her viewpoint to be more on par of an older, intellectual type.
    There are many people who have decided intellectual stimulation is far more attractive than traditional gender roles or beauty. I, am a heterosexual male, in my older age would much prefer trading of knowledge than standard relationships.
    In my case, that would still come from a female but it would not necessarily be sexual in nature as a primary. After all, we spend a hell of a lot less time being physical then mental as you start getting long in the decades of life.
    Lastly, while we can all appreciate Bransans inclusion and respect of various lifestyles, these characters are HIS and he can do whatever he wants to them regardless of the internets opinion.
    Thanks for your input an content. Danielle, your facial expressions always make it obvious you have a point to make hehe

    Oh snap... I definitely did not make the connection that the gang Adolin fought in shadesmar were presumably trying to capture honorspren for those creepy experiments or whatever Dalinar and his group stumbled into. I was still wondering wtf was going on with that Tukari gang in shadesmar... (I guess I assumed they had a grudge specifically with Notum) so thanks for bringing those two threads together! It's super obvious in hindsight! 😅

    When I got about three quarters of the way through the book I was picturing Adolin in the court:

    I'm annoyed people assume Jasnah must be Aromantic on top of asexual. It was clear through the writing that Jasnah is not at all opposed to a romantic partnership with someone as her equal, she's not opposed to romantic connection. And there's a line in the book that corroborates that she does like Wit possibly in a romantic way. She says she enjoys deep emotional and mental connection with people, she wants to invest her time and affection to someone and I think that comes across in the writing.
    Just because she doesn't have an interest in sleeping with Hoid, doesn't mean she doesn't want companionship.
    Also I am fairly certain Jasnah has something akin to spectrum or Aspergers (hello, I am spectrum).
    She's reeeeallly bad at picking up on people's emotions and bad at expressing her own. She social mirrors really well as most women on the spectrum do. But yeah I think that lead people to believe she's both asexual and Aromantic.

    A Rosharan would say that Shallan is bonded to *three* spren, because they'd call the Seon a "spren". (I'm assuming she'll bond it now.) Meanwhile Lift has both a spren and an aviar bond, just for variety.
    You could shorten Rhythm by just removing the cool-but-not-really-part-of-the-book Zahel chapter entirely, along with half of Kaladin's fight scenes.

    My guess is Ishar was trying to bind the sprens together into some form of super spren that would grant him access to all ten surges. He is also deluded to thinking that he is honor's champion and I think Honor left some kind of weapon for his champion and Ishar is trying to find it. The Shin know all about it and we will know in book 5.
    I also think this is connected to the "the man with nine shadows" thingy which in my opinion is about Honor's champion who Odium is trying to corrupt....

    Hey Marvin!!!
    U didnt like the Thaidakar name drop from Hoid to Jasnah, while I think it was pretty important, because,
    First, Inworld, teh importance of Thaidakar is not known to any of the SA characters other thatn Hoid. If Jasnah would have known it from Shallan, she could never understand the immensity of the problem they face.
    Second, while that is a page break for us, the talk continues between Jasnah and Hoid and a single word signifies Hoid telling her about cosmere stuff. Think of all that he might already have told her. What better way to tell her about cosmere and let us know as reader the same stuff in just a word??
    Third, Hoid tells her about Scadrial but starts it off from THAIDAKAR. This shows how seriously he takes Thaidakar and wants Jasnah to understand it too that from a whole planet, this is the person that she shouyld really be worried about. Its pretty intimate stuff which would definitely satisfy Jasnah intellectually and also make her a closer to Hoid.
    So, all in all, a few words laid with these meanings... I guess, it was done right. Shallan telling it would not have had the same threat level.
    As for this information not paying off right in this book, I felt, Hoid telling Jasnah about Thaidakar was in itself the payoff of this relationship. As they go on as couple, Jasnah will appreciate more and more how unique intellectually Hoid is, but this will always be one of their cornerstone. Because, information satisfies Jasnah.
    Anyway, thats my take.
    Cheers!!

    I think the reason Tavangian didn't confide in Dalinar is because he doesn't rate him as a leader. Their fundamental difference in opinion in terms of doing what is necessary means he can't really turn to Dalinar, he doesn't trust his judgement. He has to be in charge of the plan.

      We use Discord. I think Zoom would work sufficiently as well. I sometimes use that if there are guests who don't know how to use Discord. We're all on Discord anyway so it's very efficient in that way. Discord recently (I'm not sure how recently, but it wasn't this way when we first switched to Discord) made it so you can full screen the video call and you can still right click and adjust people's volume levels, which will be nice when I change the overlays. The problem with Discord is that it, in my opinion, is not particularly kind to poorer internet connections. This is why we have sometimes have robot David and robot Grace on the main Shardcast.
      Do not use Skype. The biggest issue with it is that it adds background noise to the call. They are doing that so you know you are still connected, but it sounds AWFUL on a recording. Ever since they turned to a Windows 10 app it has just sucked. We used Skype originally, and to be honest, it IS better for people with worse connections. The mobile appy nature of it made it hard to make proper overlays so I just tossed that piece of garbage and we switched to Discord.
      Zoom is fine. Being able to share a link for a meeting is nice. I have a paid account from my college, since I'm a teacher. I think its quality is slightly worse than Discord, but it depends on internet quality. Note that for group calls, free Zoom accounts have a 40 minute limit, so it's a bit a buzzkill in that respect, though that is not an issue for me since I already have a paid account. If you use Zoom, use the Gallery view. The other view sucks.
      Overall I would say Discord is generally the winner. It's free and works nicely. It has a lot of settings you can play with.
      For recording, I use OBS and I screencapture the other monitor with the video call going. I use a lot of audio filters on it, because compression is great. I still haven't gotten my audio quite correct though, if I'm being perfectly honest. I edit with Adobe Premiere. There are plenty of other ways to do this. If you're doing an audio-only podcast (like we did in 2017) you can have everyone record their audio separately and you can mix them together. That's technically better than my strategy because everyone is in their own track, so you can mute them when there's dumb background stuff. With the video call and OBS strategy, everyone who is not me is all on a single audio track. This is why my audio sounds a bit different; mine is directly captured and isn't compressed through the internet. But for video calls, it's VERY important to have the audio and video synced, so though it isn't ideal to have all the desktop audio in a single track, it works fine.
      Good audio is the most important thing for podcasts! Get a USB dynamic microphone. Don't get a Blue Yeti; those blow, in my opinion. As long as you can get the dynamic mic close to your face it'll sound great. Almost all of us here use the Audio Technica 2100, but any dynamic USB microphone is probably good.
      Anywho, that's kind of a long response. If you catch me on a stream (we'll be doing more of those this year) I'm sure you can get me to blab for a long, long time on this stuff, and honestly I still feel like I don't really know anything about all this. -Eric

    I think my biggest criticism of RoW is it just felt... small. I mean everything that happened was meaningful, but for as good as Brandon is at world building, it just felt almost claustrophobic to have this whole huge book and almost everything of note just happens in Urithiru. Maybe part of that was listening to part 1 before hand, which all happened outside of Urithiru. But the Shadesmar stuff just felt like retreading stuff we've seen before, then they were taken into custody and stuck inside the fortress for the rest of that act.
    I like Navani, and I like Kaladin, but I was just getting sick of both of them by the time I got to the climax.
    Don't get me wrong, I still liked the book, but this is the first time that one of Brandon's worlds has felt small to me.

    I'm gonna pop up real quick as an Ace, married person. I'd say I'm biromantic. To me, it makes sense. As someone who doesn't care about sex, why would gender matter?
    Asexual=/=aromatic.
    Asexual=/=antisexual.
    I have zero sex drive.
    Sex isn't a big deal. It feels good (I have nerve endings; not every ace does.). But I don't have need for it or desire for it.
    I'm married to a "normal" sexual person. Both of us have to compromise for it to work. It would be me putting my sexuality on him to ask him to forgo it totally, too, which people always forget when talking about it this. There's an emotional aspect to sex, too, which as an asexual, biromantic, I do enjoy. And as you said, I love bringing the person I love pleasure.
    I have always identified with Jasnah. My husband laughed about this reveal, because he always thought I was like her, too.

    • @jenniferreeves7362
      @jenniferreeves7362 3 роки тому +1

      This is me washing philosophical, so totally feel free to ignore it.
      Most people seem to make mistake of thinking asexual means antisexual. I get, "Wait. But you're married. You have a kid?" All the time.
      Sexuality, for a lot of ace (it is, as stated my someone else, a spectrum and I am by no means representative, though this is coming from research I've done in to it, too), is separate from a drive to have a family and relationship. We have seen that, to Jasnah, family is incredibly important. I am not reducing her to that drive, but it could play in to it. (I don't think it's a major thing, to be clear, but it is worth noting that the two aren't inherently tired together). They desire to share your life with someone exists outside of sex and the world is set up to encourage romantic entanglements as that, though if course it's not the only way. But as romance and romantic love aren't defined by sex, that drive can (and often does) exist for ace individuals just as strongly, just without the sexual component. I would be surprised if she's a bit demi (either romantic or sexual). (Meaning attraction doesn't exist until a relationship does or that attraction won't happen until someone is a known entity). Iam interested to see where he takes it. While I found her aceness and even his description of it believable (at first her being unsure of the relationship didn't seem Jasnah-ish, but if there's bad history there for her, it makes sense, and in a quasi medievalish society, aceness isn't gonna be recognized, but her general thoughts on her aceness were realistic to me, if that makes sense?), I did find the idea of Hoid in a relationship strange. But especially now that she's queen so holding herself to an even higher, more separated standard than she was previously, that desire for closeness to someone and someone to confide in is probably even stronger.
      Here the real waxing philosophicak but that doesn't matter at all: I do wonder if part of the reason most people (that I have encountered as an English speaker) equate ace and anti is that we don't have a neutral mixer of language. We technically do: "I don't want/like x." is technically neutral, but the connotation is an active dislike or negative desire, meaning that there's no way to discuss asexuality without somewhat implying antisexuality.
