  • In this video I go through the process of rebuilding the spindles on a John Deere 318 50" mower deck. The part number for the bearings is JD9296. This process is the same for all of the 300 series and most other riding mowers as well.

Good video. Thanks. I have a JDx350 and the part number of the spindles is AM144608. They are not the same spindle in your video and I was wondering if you have had any experience with this particular spindle. I have not been able to get the shaft out with a hammer. I'm afraid to use a sledge hammer like you do in your video because I don't want risk breaking the housing. Is it possible that the particular spindle is engineered in a way so that the bearings can't be accessible without destroying the housing?

I have not. I had a pretty awful time getting these out on this particular deck. Hours of hammering that weren’t recorded and forcing them out. I tried an air hammer but it didn’t help much. I ended up damaging the ends of the spindles a little but they were reusable in the end with a little work.

Dude, you should press your burns in and not hammer them and you’re supposed to use at least at bare minimum a socket. That’s approximately the same size as the outer ring. I hope you didn’t damage your bearings.

Usually I’ll put a flat plate of steel on top of the bearing to tap it in evenly. I tapped around the edge and tried to go in evenly. Thanks for watching!

There’s a handful of them on eBay. There’s also a seller on there selling a bunch of rebuilt housings with spindles and new bearings. I looked up the part number from JD and it’s the same part number as these cheap generic ones they make for other mowers. Would be interesting to see if those would fit and do the job for that price. www.ebay.com/itm/275598456939?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=nFtqHFGcRYq&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=KVfEPb4LQhK&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

@@TimothysTractors thank you, I had a look but couldn't find what I'm after. I'm in Australia, I have a 332 with a 50" deck, seized bearings. I've broken one of the housings in the press trying to get the bearings out, it is hard to find anything

Everything in your video looks identical to mine
