I never thought I would see anybody on UA-cam talk about this game.
A couple others beat me to it, but it's not a well-covered game for sure.
I remember picking this up at a small (likely now defunct) game store in a mall, in a bargain bin. I played it for awhile, but never really got into it.
I've never heard anyone else mention it before, and have never seen a video about it, until now. I kinda wish I had gotten into it. It kind of reminds me of the game 'Ephemeral Fantasia' for PS2, in that respect.

Ps1: every enemy gets a sleeping animation.
Switch: 500 pokemon removed and battle animations are just wiggling the 3d model a bit.

Competitive Pokémon breeding is in-depth with mechanics that aren’t used or cared about by casual players. They ruined that in sword and shield too, btw, which is why I have 700 hours in X&Y and 500 hours in ORAS while I stopped after 30 hours in Sword and Shield. Also, why are you condescendingly assuming ‘nostalgia’ while on a video about a PS1 game?

I own this game. And know there is a simple way to break the game in 3 turns, with 3 Living Toys in a combo.
I forget the combo, but one involved doubling Cash or XP, another was a kill all opponents, and another was a damage sponge...
Sounds like they had some pretty good ideas and some decent execution. Not my thing, but I'm glad I learned about it. Innovation is always appreciated.

I actually got stuck in this game... because I got Baby REALLY REALLY pissed off at me... Thankfully Baby doesn't go all out against you, but... Beating the game on your own AND with Baby beating on you is quite difficult (especially when Baby is practically a nuke). Even now I have no idea why Baby was mad at me.
Baby's behaviour is one of the big mysteries of this universe. We may never know what drives him to hate.
There is a feeding mechanic buried in the menus that made Baby slowly like you more.
Oh man, we talking about weird JRPGs people never heard of? Cause there's as shitload of games that fit under that description I could name.

While not as obscure I feel like legend of legaia still falls under odd ps1 jrpgs that alot of people never played. It is one of those games though that you either like or hate because the combat is like taking street fighter but making it turn based (honestly the best comparison I can think of) because you use directional inputs that get placed in your action bar that if using the correct ones turns into a combat art. Also there is a shit ton of obscure side quests.
They require things like needless back tracking, picking up small ques from NPCs, op attack arts that either require looking them up/ guessing/ or spamming the interact button on everything in the game in hopes of being told it, also gear that is locked behind an in game arcade game that I like to call autistic rock paper scissors.
I could not click on this video fast enough. This is one of my first JRPGs and nobody talks about it.
My only memories of this game include reading a short review in Official Playstation Magazine, and a demo disc trailer that had me going, "Hmm, looks interesting!"

absolutely fuckin loved this game. this and tomba are the best games *nobody* talks about. one of my favorite aspects is that everything is searchable, and if you don't search *every* box, you'll miss something, sometimes you even have to search the box multiple times. those are the sort of details i miss in modern day jrpgs. they're so afraid of you missing something. ANY content they spent time making, they shove in your face. hah, i'm glad you mentioned it, i only just reached that part.

This looks pretty interesting honestly. Feels like a game where I would play when I was on my PS1 kick in middle school and was playing a bunch of old games that I missed.

Also, No mention of the awesome soundtrack this game has? So many games had repetitive and boring music, but GC had a unique track for every town and some really awesome tunes for many story events!
The OST is full of bangers for sure, but I'm not a music guy. I'd just say that I like/dislike it and move on. Bloody hopeless when it comes to music, so I don't bother. If I use tracks in my videos though, that's a good sign that I enjoy them!
@Casp you mentioned that the caves never overstayed their welcome, well this must be it. The Cave of Fear and Kuldo Ruins music are instant standouts. That said, thinking intuitively, synth jazz and funk are two genres that would least likely work in a medieval fantasy setting, but it worked really well in this case and contributes well to its charm and heart.

0:37 - Crusade can mean quest. You do in fact go on a quest in the game.
0:58 - To be fair, the fairy in Guardian's Crusade is way less annoying than Navi. Literally, Navi is the thing that prevents me from giving Ocarina of Time a perfect score.
Sometimes charm is enough.
I really like this game for some reason, even when it is _meh_ all over. Played it 25 years or so ago. Baby is cute, Knight is bland and Nehani is actually helpfull and not just some nagging flying bug.
I especially love the Intro. The game itself is mostly lighthearted and easy going.
I like how both side story the generic knight and the brother trying to save is sister are like the typical rpg story while your just the underdog no one pays attention to also the baby was use less I just used the toy that takes out half of every one hp making him hate me and just gave up and he was attacking me untill the final boss hell the 2 times I died we're due to him that little also thanks for the vid time tail concerto is next or threads of fate also dragon seed look cool

The other one that generally gets grouped with this one, which I have(broken), is granstream saga
17:11 - Not helped by the fact that when you get the ability to travel over the water, you can immediately go to the snow area from way later in the game and gain 20 or 30 levels through powerleveling. This has the side effect of making the Baby hate you because you're too strong for that point in the story, but it's negligible since you have the LTs.
Once again, thank you for bringing an interesting game to attention. PS1 had some imaginative games.
Loved this game. It was easy to play, yet it's quite interesting for its time. Definitely a solid beginner JRPG. I like that you name the baby 'lil bich'.

Yo, Casp you should check out Legend of Legaia on ps1 if you havent. One of the most underrated JRPG's out there with an amazingly unique combat system.

It was a fun game. My neighbors mom bought it but he couldn't beat the game because he was into sports and shooters. So I borrowed it and beat it within a week.

@@Caspicum It was a weird dreamcast RPG. Turn based with a somewhat interesting premise, upon replaying it, it hasn't aged the best. But the weird steampunk design and simple nature was somewhat cool. The gamecube version was called Evolution Worlds

Some of these enemy designs (especially big boy at 16:34) remind me heavily of Digimon, if you ever heard tell of that. It's a pretty obscure franchise.

7:25 - I'm going to be honest here. I liked the designs in Breath of Fire III a hell of a lot more than the designs in Breath of Fire IV.
Breath of Fire 4 went too hard on the 3D shit, but I think the 2D designs are better than those found in BoF3, there's just a handful of them versus an entire game's worth.
This is one of those games that I grew up with that no one seems to know about, very cool to see it get reviewed.
I hated being the only kid to play a certain game. I loved JRPGs when I was a babbi, and none of my mates played them at all. The desperation to talk to a single soul about this cool experience is a killer.
8:23 - A lot of people compare the Living Toys to Pokémon, but it's probably more accurate to say they serve as the spells of the game. You only ever control the Knight in the entire game; anyone else in the party attacks automatically. And the LTs are each designed to do one thing for a set number of turns.
Although I will say that I find it funny that one of the optional LTs literally destroys the world when you use it.

This was my first ps1 rpg. Was fun beating the game at about level 50, then finding the world map chunk with scaling enemies and grinding to 99. Then finding out you can level past 100. Good time waster for kid me

Nice little game, big surprise. Surprisingly ahead of its time. Everything - cities, overworld etc - is connected without loading screens and in scale, no random encounters, you see enemies roaming around, you can tell if they are strong or weak, they will flee from you if they are weak and chase if not... I don't think most people could even appreciate it because of the "kiddie look". Their loss.
I'd hope the kiddie look wouldn't turn people off, but to each their own. It's a pretty solid experience with some confusing mechanics, but a worthy play nonetheless.
@@Caspicum I don't know now, but at the time it definitely happened. The irony here is that the game is made with a younger audience in minds, but kids want to look "older and cool", I guess.

Breath of Fire 4 used a lot more 3D than the previous game, and as a result, it doesn't hold up nearly as well. I don't think it's particularly a bad thing, I still adore the style in both games for their own reasons, but 3 does stand the test of time better.

This game was my first RPG ever back then when i was 9-10 yo. For me its an absolute masterpiece. I remember playing this game all day for 3 months 4-5 hs per day trying to get all the toys and secrets. Thnks for the vid. Suscribed!
This is one of those games I wish I had as a bebbi. It's comfy and I'd have seemingly infinite time to get everything. I explored a lot before the final guy, but I still felt like I missed a lot.
