Let me say that there is not much to be impressed by concerning the "engineering". The hull of the ship looks like it is designed in the 1960's. But I guess that there isn't much else to expect since the US is not a shipping nor a shipbuilding nation.
@@Dan-fo9dk, right. So where is yours, ace? How many nuclear powered carriers do you have?? It may look like something from the 60's, but it isn't. Nuclear powered. The overall design isn't something requiring massive change because it works well. Your carrier builders know that, right?
@@carolnelson9269 .....well....working with construction of ships for a life time makes one to have some ideas about such. Your statements are just a clueless mess. It is a simple fact that USA is not a shipping or a ship building nation.....and that shows..... The claimed "engineering" clearly show where USA are to be found on that scale... The knowledge needed to make a modern, effective and sea capable design of the hull of the ship isn't there. How many air planes it carries and that it is nuclear powered ....are irrelevant to this fact ....and does not help the ship a tad to perform better at sea.....
@@Dan-fo9dk What is the value of a (war)ship that is nuclear powered? Start with that. Carriers are not tankers, nor are they cargo ships or cruise ships. They are a warship designed to transport aircraft (and the support the aircraft require), be they offensive, or defensive in nature. NAVY carriers are large. Not as large as most oil tankers, but large. How many tankers or cargo ships can reach 30+knots? The A4W reactors (two) that power our current carriers can generate 140,000 shaft horsepower each, to drive a ship displacing in excess of 100,000 long tons to 30+ knots.
My God, it's like watching the Roman Legions parade 2000 years before Christ !! Today the US is the largest Empire. This Aircraft Carrier is majestic and it is not the only one they have !!. @@carolnelson9269 lol.......how can I explain something to someone who obviously don't understand the most elementary things about ships.... It was claimed that "...nothing compare to it it's massive...". Fact: There are tons of ships which is bigger / more massive.... So here we talking are about the size of the ship. How many planes it can carry is irrelevant. That since the weight of 70 air planes is almost nothing..... Any cargo ships, even small such, carries multiple times that weight. So until you can separate between ships and planes I've nothing more to say.....

Hey if any of you are interested, there's a 10 1 hour series titled "Carrier" on PBS (Public Broadcast System). Back in 2004 or 2005 a PBS film crew was given unrestricted access to all crew areas on the USS Nimitz on a deployment to the Middle East. Basically an aircraft carrier is a floating city of some 5,400 residents. The average age is, I believe, 19. That's crazy.
Yeah, a lot of the sailors are young kids, but as you move up the command ladder that changes. Commissioned officers, Senior Chiefs, and of course Master Chiefs who've been around forever with tons of experience.

@@milesduggan All of what you said is nonsense. Norway has had a very liberal and democratic political system for far longer than almost any other country in Europe. The pro-fascist party was tiny and irrelevant during the inter-war years. The ABBA member was not a product of Lebensborn, but just the quite ordinary child of a German soldier and a local woman. Norway is also not very homogenous, about 1/5 of the population are immigrants. You can google any of this, and I would challenge anybody who comes across your post to do so.

Norway have a border with Russia. These days it is more like us Norwegians thanking the US for bringing USS Gerald Ford and parking it right in the middle of our capital. There are no practical reasons for doing that, most large allied ships go to Northern Norway. This visit by the USS Gerald Ford to Oslo is a big FU to Russia. It shows the strength of NATO while our neighbor Russia is going to war against Ukraine. When the US parks its newest and best floating war machine in downtown Oslo to visit their Norwegian friends, it is a hugely important message for the US and Norway to send.

WOW, What an incredible piece of engineering !! It's MASSIVE
Most of it is below the water line :)
Welcome, Gerry Ford and her crew!

Of you have not seen one of these in person, nothing compares to it its massive. And to see it in Norway is pretty cool
.....to your information are there many ships that are bigger....
@@Dan-fo9dkWe know this. And your point would be? How many of them carry 70+ aircraft?
@@carolnelson9269 lol.......how can I explain something to someone who obviously don't understand the most elementary things about ships....
It was claimed that "...nothing compare to it it's massive...". Fact: There are tons of ships which is bigger / more massive.... So here we talking are about the size of the ship. How many planes it can carry is irrelevant. That since the weight of 70 air planes is almost nothing..... Any cargo ships, even small such, carries multiple times that weight.
So until you can separate between ships and planes I've nothing more to say.....
@@Dan-fo9dk Try rereading my post. You have nothing more condescending to say is actually a good thing. Happy trails.

Hey if any of you are interested, there's a 10 1 hour series titled "Carrier" on PBS (Public Broadcast System).
