  • This is a new generator I picked up at an auction. It is a 1963 Onan 2 LK - 1RV / 3B. For some reason no one bid on it too much and I got this unit for $54 CAN. I had to replace a couple of brush springs, file the points and clean the carb to get it running.

      We are definitely planning to be there, and if the timing is right we wouldn't mind going to see a race. :-) I am a big fan of grass roots racing I love watching real racers.

      It is a nice generator. I would check out the Smokestack forums as they have a large Onan generator section with people that know their stuff. There is a manual on this site, www.twinslan.net/~n0nas/manuals/onan/
      This manual site is down sometimes but keep trying. If you can't get the manual I have a copy and can send it to you.

      @@theberginsgarage7917 thats awesome. Thanks man. Ill let you know how it goes. It was an emergency generator set up in an old school i just pulled the boilers out of. Got the actual onan automatic start up panel with it too. As soon as it lost power it would fire up. I was thinking mid 70s but its cool tp see it may actually be older

      It would technically make onan generator #2 for me. Ive also got alate 80s early 90s miller welder with an onan 20hp twin cylider. Thing screams. I love it

      I also have a few Onans as I am a big fan. I have one 20hp and two 24hp opposed twins. I am converting the 20hp one for use on one of my Gravelys. I recently picked up a 6.5 Kw Onan generator that won't run as it is too carboned up from running with the choke on. I will be fixing it as soon as I finish repairing the valve grinder I bought to help fix the generator 🤷‍♂️🙄🤦‍♂️. The 1800rpm Onan gen's sound so relaxed compared to the usual 3600 generators for the other manufacturers.

      Old kohlers and old onans are my favorite small engines. I have a few different wheel horse garden tractors too.nothing like them old "big blocks" i swear m old 12hp c120 will out mow, till and snow blow anything new with twice the hp

    do u know how to replace brushes mine was working when parked now will not start

      On my generator the brushes are under a steel band on the end of the generator held tight with two screws. Just remove the screws and take the cover off. Under it there should be two sets of brushes one set of four for the exciter and another pair for the slip rings on the field. The exciter is used as a motor to start the generator so the set of four is where to start. If your generator is trying to start but not making it past the compression stroke try using two six volt batteries instead of a single twelve volt battery. The manual specifically states to use a pair of six volt batteries and I haven't figured out why yet but it does make a difference. If you find broken brush springs you can get replacements on E-Bay.

      what are condensors for cleaned brushes up and is running thanks but blew condensors

    • @theberginsgarage7917
      @theberginsgarage7917  7 років тому

      There are two condensers I know of on my generator. The first is for the ignition system and the other is used to interrupt the field of the alternator to reduce the voltage spikes when the ignition fires. I am pretty sure the point gap should be 0.020". There is a capacitor in the control box and I am not sure what it is for but if I remember properly it is used to smooth the exciter output.

      The condensers are capacitors and they are used to stop the arcing at the points when they open. When the points open they cause a large voltage spike from the coil as the magnetic field collapses. The discharged condenser gives a path for the electricity, as it charges, so the points can open far enough not to arc over.

    Plug in tools without checking the output voltage or frequency, not too smart. A good way of destroying a tool or heater due to low voltage.

      Thanks for watching but don't get too cocky. The two things I used to test the generator are not voltage or frequency sensitive. The drill uses what is called a universal motor which will run perfectly fine on 120 volts DC and if the voltage was low it would just run slow. How do you think they make them variable speed? 🤦‍♂️🙄 The heat gun uses a universal motor for it's fan as well. I've been working for 35 years as a maintenance electrician in a steel mill so I know fair bit about everything electrical. Which is why I chose those items to use. 🤷‍♂️
      I completely checked out every wire and coil in the generator before I even started.

      @@MatthewBerginGarage GOOD BOY, Matt. There is a whole world, of 'armchair' so-called knowitalls. i been fixing working with engines, anything with wires on it, for over 35 years, as well. Computers, to dryers, fridges, washers, any 'electrical '' tools, computers, etc etc. Just ignore the insanity. Hang in there !
