Flathead V8 Fuel Pump Refresh
Переглядів 6 тис.6 років тому
I do a refresh on the 53's fuel pump. It needed it because it was leaking out of the sediment bowl quite a lot when we tried to use the pump. I didn't do a complete rebuild as I really want a dual action pump with the vacuum as well, as I am keeping the vacuum wipers.
A Train horn for the F150
Переглядів 1,3 тис.6 років тому
We unbox a K5LA train horn that we picked up to install on our F150. This horn ( Or Chime ) needs 130 psi and a 1/2" air line for the full orchestral beauty to emerge so I will have to back the install up with some stout components. I will be using a manual air valve to operate the horn. That way I will have more control and be able to say "HI" or "F-OFF" as I see fit. With a horn this loud tho...

This is a nice 1928 Johnson A - 35 a 2.5 Hp horizontally opposed twin two stroke outboard motor. I picked it up at an auction along with a 1952 Mercury Super Five. I am going to restore these outboards to a good running condition as I feel that all engines should run and work because that is what they were made to do.

2 Kw Onan generator first start
Переглядів 4,7 тис.8 років тому
This is a new generator I picked up at an auction. It is a 1963 Onan 2 LK - 1RV / 3B. For some reason no one bid on it too much and I got this unit for $54 CAN. I had to replace a couple of brush springs, file the points and clean the carb to get it running. Created with Corel VideoStudio.

First start of a 1960 Gravely LI in 20 years
Переглядів 15 тис.8 років тому
Getting a Gravely that has been sitting for a long time running again. On the way to pick up this Gravely I stupidly made a promise to myself that, although the Gravely would need to be pulled on to the truck, I was going to drive it off under it's own power. I would learn to regret that pact. Created with Corel VideoStudio.
Onan -17° C cold start
Переглядів 9718 років тому
I wanted to see if this particular Onan would be worthy of being converted to Gravely use. The low last night was -23 degrees C or -7 F for my friends south of the border. That is the coldest it has been so far this winter. So no better time than now to see if it will start. The actual temp outside when this was shot was -17 degrees C or 2 degrees F. Created with Corel VideoStudio.
New exhaust for the Onan CCKB
Переглядів 6 тис.9 років тому
I picked up a used exhaust system from a John Deere tractor on E-Bay so I had to do a few modifications to get it to fit my CCKB. The end result is worth the effort as the engine sounds great and is really quiet. The muffler was in great condition just a little surface rust. Easily cleaned up and painted with Black Velvet high temperature paint to look good as new.

Wonderful find Excellent video. I am a first time visiting your channel. Liked and subscribed 😀
We need an updated video. This is getting old❤❤❤❤
👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
They used that same engine in the Russian cars lol
do they make a electronic ignition for the onan nhc? does your onan have a ballast resistor for the points?
I think they did. My engine is a CCKB so it is points only. The coil in my engine is a 3 ohm 12 volt coil so no resistor. If the coil was only 1.5 ohm it would be a 6 volt coil and require a ballast resistor to work on 12 volts.
If you put gas in the intake and it does not fire its not going to start no matter how long you crank it.
Exactly. But the plugs looked so good I mistakenly gave them an undeserved pass. 🤷♀️🤔
Love the sound of those old onan opposed twins
Me too. I can't wait to hear it on my Gravely instead of the Briggs that is there now
Thanks 👊
You are welcome🙋
Hi, very good job. Thanks
Everytime I start my Wheelhorse 520-H, my wife marvels about how good it sounds. That low exhaust note and governor hunting adds to the song. Onan engines were built to work hard and last for decades. Modern Harbor Fright engines sound good for a while, then smoke and burn oil after 100 hours, causing repair. I like how this fellow worked in the snow to get his Onan running. It's like a quest to see if it will run. If one starts for myself, it feels just like Christmas morning.
? 137.00 dollars, for a spark plug wire ? WOW......this modern 'use once ' = throw away world, DOESN'T LIKE CUSTOMERS WHICH rejuvenate older, GOOD EQUIPMENT. So, they see you/me/us coming in the door, asking '' Do you have a plug wire, for an old Onan generator ''? Right away, the price went up, 500 percent, or more. STAY NORMAL, MR. BERGINS' GARAGE......(oldfarmboy) i remade a 1983 yamaha EF2800 generator. Looks real good, new paint 'n all. STARTS right up, makes good power, stable rpm under 2 loads. SHALOM ! ALL
In Onan's defence the plug wire has a metal shield over the plug end and the rest of the wire is shielded with braided stainless steel for minimal electrical interference.😉
nice
Thanks
Thanks much enjoyed the video
Your welcome.🙋♂️😊
Seems quite ironic that you performed this task for a 7.3 PS, considering that I went around to several auto parts stores earlier today, with having settled on these solder-on solid brass, tin coated terminals for my 7.3 PS batteries! Randomly was lookin’ for a tutorial video on this type being attached & picked this vid first
I love the way life works out sometimes. 👍😉 I am a Power-Stroke fan from the IDI days. I am glad my little movie was useful.
Is this a 239 hp?
The engine is 239 cubic inch or 3.9 Liter but it only has 110Hp when new. What it might produce nowadays is open for debate. 😉🙋♂️
Hey , It kicked at 25:41 I think I can , I think I can , I can , I can . Put put put . ye
Do you subscribe to coldwarmotors ?
Yes. Please read the response on the 53 Ford video .
More than 5 years after you posted this, I found myself giving you a big thumbs up through my screen, when you got it to run. I no longer have my old inherited Gravely two-wheelers, and regret their absence every time I see one. Thank you for making me both happy and sad with your progress.
Thanks for the comment. These machines tend to work their way into your heart. I have always said that Gravely's may look a little strange but work much better than you might think. It is their quirkiness, competence and bullet proof construction that inspires our loyalty.
You did a great job getting that going. I have a 63 LI. I do not have a snow cannon but I have a dozer blade that does a great job on snow.
Thanks for the reply. I have one of those blades as well and as long as the snow is not too deep it is way faster than the blower. I can do the sidewalks on both sides of my street in less than 10 minutes.
Was the piston size standard or was it oversized?
Thanks for the question. The piston was .020 over.
Very nice! My buddy has two motorcars (speeders) with Onan CCKA engines, they are fantastic little engines. I have one under the hood of my Wheel Horse 520H.
That is funny the person I bought this from was planning to use this CCKB on his lawn tractor. It came with a spare 1 7/8ths" crankshaft. My Gravely uses a 1 3/16ths crank. So I am using one off of an Onan CCKA. Same stroke and bearing sizes. The cast iron CCKB's weight may give me a little edge at the lawn tractor pulls.😉
@@theberginsgarage7917 Awesome man! Haha, these engines are HEAVY!
I thought I had alot of crap in the garage, but you take the cake! Hope to start working on my LA in about a year after retirement, had all the parts for about 1/2 a life time so far.
What can I say I'm a Gemini through and through.🤷♂️😉 Have fun getting your LA fixed up.
Hi The Bergin;s Garage! Can you put up a link to the online manual. Cheers!
I picked one up here for $14. www.tradebit.com/tagworld.php/johnson+evinrude+workshop+manual It is about Evinrude's mostly but they had very similar models since they were to all effects the same company. Good from 1911 to 1942.
Cheers The Bergin's Garage, best £11.00's I've spent for a while much appreciated!
I have found that pointing the solder terminal down will make a cleaner job and you can solder faster too. Then use wet cloth to cool down the terminal finishes the job. Well done fella too.
Thanks for the tips. I didn't show the finished product. I also covered the joint with some red heat shrink with the glue inside to seal it up.
@@theberginsgarage7917 Job well done fella. Peace
Can you say stuck valve !!!!!! If you would of filled the spark plug with kerosine and automatic trans fluid and let it soak you would probably not have to take more things apart. I like what anyone who sells anything will tell you anything to sell whatever they are selling. What did you pay for the beast fella ??? Peace
I actually didn't mind having to remove the head as I wanted to see the piston size. The seller didn't know anything about the walk behind as it was his grandfathers. I think I paid $150 for the unit. I have since found the real issue with this unit. It seems to have a spun main bushing. Probably from the missing main oil feed, there was oil all over the transmission as if someone had tried to start it with the line missing. I have acquired a good bottom end to repair the issue. I will get back to it when I get my new knees. I have one replaced so far and the next in a couple of months. 👍😊
@@theberginsgarage7917 I did not have the heart to tell you the negative of a broken oil line. That is never any good. Have to wish you luck with your knee and the next one in line to be replaced. I need a new hip soon. I can feel your pain and soon I will be joining you on the pain train. The price was really good for what you got bergen. Good luck and hope you made a video replacing the bottom bushing fella?? Have a safe day too.
I will be making a vid, I expect to get at it this spring. I wish you luck with your replacement. A hip is a little more involved than a knee but the ones I have seen have gone well. Surgery has improved greatly these last few years.
@@theberginsgarage7917 I really hope so fella. Thanks and peace too.
You are so right with soldering brass floats. But I have been doing that since the 1990s and making new ones too. Using the proper technique with the right molds can make your day for sure. When the customer wants a total fix, there is nothing more bullet proof that plating the cast iron carb with nickel plate..Corrosion is kept at bay period. The idle spring is good by the sound it makes, otherwise you need to make one, I prefer using stainless wire and wind my own. My trick for making sure the brass jet seats come out is by putting the carb into boiling water. I said enough fella. There is an old saying, YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR FELLA, Good day too.
That is a good idea about using hot water for the jets and for plating the carb. I will have to dunk the carb in metal rescue next time and try plating it. I already have the plating solution.
Hey there. Love that 53. Been following that ride since Cold War motors. Any updates coming out soon??
I don't know if you have seen my other channel but there are more videos there. ua-cam.com/channels/QPHZyC0XusKxh5039tzNIw.html Here is a project link: ua-cam.com/video/QPiO5tWOcTo/v-deo.html Thanks for the comment. I have been a little preoccupied lately as I have just received my first new knee. The condition of my knees the last few years has been a drag on doing any work on the car but this first knee has been fantastic I can't wait for the next one. The increased mobility will make the work easier and best of all faster as I may not have been able to work on the car but I have been buying parts. 👍😊 As soon as my son gets the C10 project finished (soon) I will move the car to my home garage and work will progress much faster. It's heated😎
The Bergin's Garage Thankyou for the link, can’t wait to catch up on the episodes. My dad had a 52 and 53 customline years ago. I had 50 shoebox which I had to sell but hope to get another or early 50’s ford someday. Still have my 65 Tbird and dad has a 62 old Starfire. Best to you on a speedy recovery and thanks for the videos. EdB
No problem. I have always liked the early 50's Fords and I am a big fan of the mid 60's T Birds, the 64 convertible in orange is my favorite. You should put up a better vid of your T Bird. The 64 and 65 are pretty close in looks.👍😊
Just hit the side of the knuckle with a dam hammer and the tie rod will break loose. Do it all the time and haven’t yet invested in all these “fancy tie rod” remover tools.
That is your choice. Since I have the tools I use them. There is a reason all those tools are manufactured and why mechanics have have bought and used them for so many years. Pounding on a piece of cast steel with a BFH is no way to treat the parts that keep the wheels on your vehicle and direct it down the road. I like my cast steel spindles without cracks and fractures thank you. You may have gotten away with it so far but someday maybe you or someone who's car you have worked on won't be so lucky.
I just got one of these for free but its lpg powered. Any way of pulling info off these so i can try to convert it back to gas?
It is a nice generator. I would check out the Smokestack forums as they have a large Onan generator section with people that know their stuff. There is a manual on this site, www.twinslan.net/~n0nas/manuals/onan/ This manual site is down sometimes but keep trying. If you can't get the manual I have a copy and can send it to you.
@@theberginsgarage7917 thats awesome. Thanks man. Ill let you know how it goes. It was an emergency generator set up in an old school i just pulled the boilers out of. Got the actual onan automatic start up panel with it too. As soon as it lost power it would fire up. I was thinking mid 70s but its cool tp see it may actually be older
It would technically make onan generator #2 for me. Ive also got alate 80s early 90s miller welder with an onan 20hp twin cylider. Thing screams. I love it
I also have a few Onans as I am a big fan. I have one 20hp and two 24hp opposed twins. I am converting the 20hp one for use on one of my Gravelys. I recently picked up a 6.5 Kw Onan generator that won't run as it is too carboned up from running with the choke on. I will be fixing it as soon as I finish repairing the valve grinder I bought to help fix the generator 🤷♂️🙄🤦♂️. The 1800rpm Onan gen's sound so relaxed compared to the usual 3600 generators for the other manufacturers.
Old kohlers and old onans are my favorite small engines. I have a few different wheel horse garden tractors too.nothing like them old "big blocks" i swear m old 12hp c120 will out mow, till and snow blow anything new with twice the hp
Also thank you for teaching the ability to check spark without having to crank over the engine, points closed and power on and off to coil!
The result keeps you awake. 😲
you prolly dont give a shit but does anyone know of a tool to get back into an instagram account..? I was dumb lost my password. I appreciate any assistance you can offer me
@Boston Baylor Instablaster =)
@Rene Tony I really appreciate your reply. I found the site through google and im in the hacking process atm. Seems to take quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
@Rene Tony it did the trick and I now got access to my account again. I am so happy! Thank you so much, you saved my account :D
HI is this a 12 volt starter, do you know if they made them with 6 or 24 volt, I am attempting to get one of these working and the am not sure on the starter. I can not find a data plate, but the engine looks like yours, same point system and carb and heads etc. Its been sitting for a long time and the history is unknown. Thank you for the clear video, its hard to find a video or information on this model, do you know how many years they made this model engine?
Thanks for the comment. I am not sure how long they made this engine but it has been a while. Onan has made horizontally opposed twins since the 50's. Here is a link to some Onan manuals twinslan.net/~n0nas/manuals/onan/ If the link doesn't work just search for Onan manuals on the internet find this link in the results. this link will work from the search results Why I don't know🙄 A good forum is the Smokestack forum. They have a whole section on Onan's The starter is probably 12 volt but it could be 24 volt if it was used in an industrial situation. It is unlikely to be 6 volt unless it is very old. A starter is pretty tough and as long as you don't run the starter too long you can run a 6 volt starter on 12 volts it just runs a little fast. The reverse is true of the 24 volt starter it will run on 12 but just a little slow. Don't keep the starter engaged for more than 15 seconds. Measure the ignition coil resistance if it is 3 ohms you don't need a ballast resistor if it is around 1.5 ohms you need one, but it will run fine for testing purposes. Check the coil isn't getting too hot if you aren't using one. You should post a small video of your engine on UA-cam so I can see it. Just a little phone video is all you need.
I believe they used that motor in a Rutan Quickie. Do you know in what kinds of machines that engine was used? I used to think it was just a generator motor.
Thanks for the comment. The Onan twin has been used in a lot of things, Many high end lawn tractors, portable welders, small skid steers, and of course Generators. This particular one was from a Fairmont Speeder which is one of those little 4 wheel rail cars that the rail crews use do rail inspections. The old Onan twin was a really well built very reliable engine. You might notice that I am a bit of a Onan fan.🤷♂️😉
Plug in tools without checking the output voltage or frequency, not too smart. A good way of destroying a tool or heater due to low voltage.
Thanks for watching but don't get too cocky. The two things I used to test the generator are not voltage or frequency sensitive. The drill uses what is called a universal motor which will run perfectly fine on 120 volts DC and if the voltage was low it would just run slow. How do you think they make them variable speed? 🤦♂️🙄 The heat gun uses a universal motor for it's fan as well. I've been working for 35 years as a maintenance electrician in a steel mill so I know fair bit about everything electrical. Which is why I chose those items to use. 🤷♂️ I completely checked out every wire and coil in the generator before I even started.
@@MatthewBerginGarage GOOD BOY, Matt. There is a whole world, of 'armchair' so-called knowitalls. i been fixing working with engines, anything with wires on it, for over 35 years, as well. Computers, to dryers, fridges, washers, any 'electrical '' tools, computers, etc etc. Just ignore the insanity. Hang in there !
You don't have the slightest idea how that ignition Works do you? Clicking that switch on and off expecting to see spark that is hilarious
Sorry but you are wrong, 🤦♂️🙄with the points closed, turning the ignition switch on and off imitates the action of the points and will produce a spark. Get a battery, a coil, and a switch or just some pieces of wire and try it. Just don't hold the coil by the top when you test it.😲 You can even do the same with old style electronic ignitions (where they still use a distributor) to check if it is a failed coil or the control box using the ignition switch. If you have a pulse from the pickup and a spark when you turn the key on and off the control module is shot. I grew up when there were point style ignitions on every engine. You shouldn't get cocky I have been working on engines for 55 years as my hobby and as an industrial maintenance electrician for the last 35 years. I probably understand battery/coil and magneto ignitions far better than you.
I love cluttered up workshops. They’ve got that homey comfort feeling about them. All your toys around you. So much to look at. But a PIA to work in. Can’t find this, can’t find that. Love the IHC engines 👍
Thanks for the comment. It's OK I know where everything is as long as no one moves anything 🙄🙄 but that rarely happens.🤦♀️🤦♂️👍
That's a great little motor. I am looking for something just like that to put on my mini boat
Thanks for the comment. It is a great little beastie but don't know if you would. This old beastie has sleeve bearings and the engine's oil mix using dino oil is 12 to 1. It smokes like a banshee while it is running, even using a synthetic which I mix at 16 to 1. It gets me some dirty looks around modern boaters. I just tell them "Its old enough to smoke"
Thanks for the video. Looks like I have almost the exact same Gravely, with the exception of the snowblower attachment and the electric start. A guy where I used to work (retired now) dealt with old Gravelys, offered to sell me the electric start kit for mine for $100, I still kick myself in the butt for not buying it. I'm getting a little long in the tooth now, and pull starting isn't that much fun, (never was really).
Thanks for the comment. I can sympathize with you about the pull start. I have a 1950 L that really hates to start. I think the magneto on that beastie has lost some strength, maybe it's time for a recharge. You can get the parts needed to convert to electric start on eBay although the prices vary. If you are not in a hurry and are willing to wait they can be had for a good price.
My 89 seadoo had a Briggs and Stratton fuel pump on it when I baught it any way you can show me what lines go to what connection on fuel pump. Fuel in feed outfeed ect.

Thanks I've been looking.
My father in law had a Gravely just like the one you have. It was a great mower
Thanks for the comment. The first time I used one I liked Gravely's. Now in my old age I have GAS (Gravely acquisition syndrome ) and collect far too many but it is fun.
nice love onan engines sounds like it has a rod knock or something maybe im wrong did you rebuild it looks really cool and sounds good
Thanks for the comment. I agree about how they sound. Like a flathead VW bug engine. No that is not a rod knock. I think it might have been a rattle in the shrouding around the flywheel. I am disassembling this engine to replace the crank with one that will fit the Gravely transmission. I have finally assembled all the parts I need to do the job. I have all new bearings and a governor system. Soon as the lookdown is over the crank is going for machining.Stay tuned for more videos on this beastie.
Good job, but don't forget the shrink tube!!
Thanks for the comment. I always use heat shrink. I put some nice triple layer heat shrink with sealant on the connection. Good for the life of the truck.
Love the CCKB videos and you do a great job!
Thanks I really like the Onan engines they are things of beauty. I will be doing more movies about this engine as I finally have all the parts to install the new crank that will fit the Gravely transmission. I just have to get it disassembled and to the machine shop.
The Bergin's Garage I’m in the same boat working on a CCKB for a Simplicity 4041 Powermax tractor. The parts are a lot of fun to find. Let me know if you are missing anything else because I have some great part sources.
When I get the engine disassembled I will see what I need. I am concerned with the oil pumps condition. You should post some vids about your rebuild on your page.
The Bergin's Garage I know! I will start making videos because a lot of the problems we solve are very helpful to others. Not a whole lot of info on the old stuff.
cool! that yellow paint looks kinda different, lol. i found a manual online for these engines. to start it up, all you need is a half turn on the needle, push the choke and roll it over twice. release the choke and with the crank handle at the bottom (beginning of the compression stroke) a quarter turn is all it takes! mine starts right up and purrs like a kitten! actually, it roars like a lion, LOL.
Thanks for the comment. The yellow isn't my favorite but that is how it was painted when we purchased it. I was amazed how well it runs. We have a video on our other channel of a cold start and it fired up just as you described. Link ....... ua-cam.com/video/U7i9xAMHH8Y/v-deo.html Our engine has the wrong pulley on the output shaft and it is throwing off the balance making it bounce a little. I am still looking for the correct replacement. We also have to replace the start handle return spring. It will be a bit of a chore as the PO welded in the handles pin.
@@theberginsgarage7917 that spring is broken in mine as well, but I just try to keep my hands clear of the handle. I did have a bad kickback from the day I bought mine and once you break a thumb, you remember to keep clear of spinning things, Haha. But if the handle doesn't retract on it's own, a carefully placed foot is enough to fold it in. ;)
Open toe shoes not a smart idea safty first. But great video
I had socks on.:-)
I dont think you needed to change the speedo! the correct truck millage should show on the new one!
Thanks for the comment. Since the computer in the 92 is an OBD1 system and very small I wasn't sure if the mileage would be stored in the computer. To be safe I kept my original speedo.
@@theberginsgarage7917 Right that makes sense! I think Ill doo this swap and test and see if it works! I think it would, but I have been known to be wrong! lol
I've been wrong quite a few times myself.:-( Got to look at the positive side, being wrong is the only time you learn something. Let me know how it turns out that way we can both learn.
