I think it's interesting that whenever there's a discussion on who's the GOAT on bass, almost all the other names brought up (Chris Squire, Geddy Lee, Lemmy, etc.) were influenced/inspired by John Entwistle.
The album is about the mod culture in 60s England the mods loved their Motown so it’s really interesting you guys picked up on the Motown sounds here. Hadn’t occurred to me before. The whole album is driven by the bass and drums of two of the greatest.
The Who at times called themselves maximum R&B. The bands from that time really grabbed a lot of genres and made the rock sound. Was a great time for music
We Don't Get Fooled Again, is a must listen to song from The Who. Roger Daltry, best rock scream in this song. Also, the message is still relevant today.
Yeah, the message is super relevant imo because it shows how every generation thinks they are going to do things in some radically different fashion but in the end, it seems like more of the same. We change the colors and flavors and styles but humans keep doing the same basic things over and over.
I would say this is one of the Top Ten "MUST LISTEN" rock songs out there, by ANY group! For its sheer overpowering QUALITY and ROCKINGNESS, but also cos it's socially important and the very SOUL of rock and roll in many ways! Airplay Beats will NOT be disappointed, lol!
You guys should definitely consider doing the whole album...It's one of the all-time greats. I got to see The Who perform this entire album from start to finish in concert - one of the best shows I've ever seen, and I've seen lots. Enjoying your reactions and your discoveries along the way!
Guys That Bass Line, and the late Keith Moon on drums. That’s one of the tightest grooves in all of R & R History. They start with the hammer down. And just never let up. Great Job once again. ❤
OMG so glad you're doing this one. Hoping you'll do all of QUADROPHENIA. This music and film changed my teenage life (for the better). Orchestral and so emotional.
Should have let it keep going, it merges into Quadrophenia, main theme, an absolutely magnificent instrumental piece. I always consider, I Am The Sea (the short preamble) The Real Me and Quadrophenia Main Theme to be one piece and they should be listened to like that.
Rock music doesn’t get any better than this. Peak Who. Who’s Next then this masterpiece of a concept album. They had so many great songs later but Townsend admitted that they could never top Quadrophenia. So glad you’re reacting to this album. Great work guys.
the who were rooted in the 50`s R&B, but they took that sound into the rock side of rock & roll. They are so immense, wild and fantastic. What a bunch of amazing artists
Saw the Who in the 70’s. The ending you only hear in stereo but in concert they had speakers in the 4 corners of the stadium. The Quadraphonic sound going all around & back in forth was incredible effect.
Keep plugging away. You are getting a solid foundation for rock & roll and blues/ rock! I hate to sound like an old fart but you rarely find musicians capable of recording and performing live music, like BITD (70's, give or take a few years)! Your musical life is changing for the better! 🤘🏼🎵😜
The Who promoted themselves as Maximum R&B starting back in 1964. They played Motown covers regularly into 1967, then brought back Baby Don't You Do It (Marvin Gaye) in 1971 shows. So, well spotted!
What you're hearing is Entwhistle's first take in the studio. Said he was just playing around. Other members loved it so much this was the one they used for album.

Entwhistle played "Lead Bass" as a joke when they were recording this in the studio. The other guys loved it so much they kept it in the final product. That was his first and only take in recording it. Skillz.
First I saw these guys doing Quadrophenia starting with the third track (quadrophenia) and it's like No, guys, you have to start at the beginning with the Real Me....... then I saw they did do that and I'm listening to it now to see what they have to say at the end.
Quadrophenia is a concept album by Pete Townshend… often referred to as a “rock opera”. It’s best listened to straight through from start to finish as the songs blend together ala “Pink Floyd” albums.
You like the bass. You like the horns. Thank John "Ox" Entwistle, who was the who's bassist, plus did the horn work in studio. Yes, he was an accomplished French Horn player as well as a bassist.
This is definitely one of The Who's best. Even BETTER (you bet!) is the eight-minute rock MASTERPIECE "Won't Get Fooled Again"! It is unbelievably good. Bass, drums, gee-tar, vocals, ramped up even more. Kick-ass synth keyboards, too. "Behind Blue Eyes" and "I can see for miles" and "My Generation" and "5:15" and "Who Are You" and "Magic Bus" and, well, there ARE a lot of superb songs by this amazing group, but I'd put "Won't Get fooled again" at the top of their best!
Allegedly they told the bass player just play the craziest thing you can, we're not recording the bass track on this take. They were, and they kept it.
Let it roll into the next song, it's an overture..it previews the entire album thru ,3 minute instrumental of musical genius. The overture gives you a sample of all the songs of the album. .. including Love Reign over me..the finale! Love you two willing too do this one. RESPECT! 💥❤️👍💯
I actually can't believe you guys didn't even mention the bass. You must have thought it was some other instrument because it was so F-ing dynamic. Please listen again!!! It is unparalleled!

I knew John Entwistle who was the nicest guys you'd ever wanted to meet and the most talented bass player I can think of. He was so underestimated. I thought John was even better than Bootsy and JPJ!

And while most of the catalog is great, WGFA is the true belly of the beast, I think. The Who were incredibly significant to us in the 70s and to generations of musicians and listeners since.
John Entwhistle rivals any bass player in history. He’s incredible. Keith Moon on the drums is also a thing to behold.
I think it's interesting that whenever there's a discussion on who's the GOAT on bass, almost all the other names brought up (Chris Squire, Geddy Lee, Lemmy, etc.) were influenced/inspired by John Entwistle.
John the goat
He was brilliant on the horns as well!
Then you put them together... perfect synchronicity. And addicting as fuck!
It's their show.
This whole album is epic from start to finish. 💯
Desert island album.
And the movie. First time I had seen Sting
Saw them do it live at MSG in the mid ‘90’s. EPIC!
John on bass and Kieth on drums just kill it. This song is one of the Who's best!
This bass line was a driving force and those drums were right along with it
Keith Moon and John Entwhistle may have been rock’s greatest rhythm section.

Quite possibly the greatest rock album ever. There is so much to hear. The Who clicking on all cylinders
Yes, it is.

Everything about this song is relentless. Running bass, smashing drums, driving guitar, horns and the only person on the planet who could sing it all.
This album is a Rock Opera. A MASTERPIECE in the highest form. You mentioned Motown. In the early days The WHO's slogan was Maximum R&B.
Quadrophenia is one of the very top concept albums ever recorded. It is brilliant from start to finish. Well worth a deep dive.
I wholeheartedly agree. And as excellent a song a "Love Reign O'er Me" is, it's even better as the closer for the whole album.
Got to love a song that has lead bass going off the whole song while the guitar does the rhythm, and of course the drummer is just going wild
