  • A dive on The Wreck of the USS SAN DIEGO just south of Long Island New York. We dropped in and made for the stern, then we dropped some more to the sand and check out on of her mighty guns. Hope you enjoy it!

I grew up in LI and started diving after a friend in college introduced me to the sport. We used to tromp around LI a lot, mostly night dives because we studied all day. There was a spate of negative publicity about the wreck back in the 80's because they had a year where several divers drowned on the wreck. My father nearly pleaded with me not to give him a heart attack by diving this wreck so I never did it. This and the Oregon are to me like Everest was to Jon Krakauer. It was always something in your mind but never got around to doing.

I used the fish the San Diego wreck as well as the Oregon many years ago, thanks for giving us a glimpse of those Black Sea Bass and Tautog that gave us so much pleasure all the years I was able to fish. Honorable mention to the Bergalls that would plague bait fishing everywhere we went.

In the 70's & 80's my favorite wreck. Many times I dove from the RV Wahoo-Steve, Hank & Janet were great to dive with.

The diving community is indeed very small. It’s funny, to live on a different continent and know perfectly well who Steve is and why he hated the Seeker, for example.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane for me. I dove in NY/LI for over 20 years and have logged lots of dives on this wreck.

The USS San Diego was an armored cruiser sunk near the end of WW I. Most likely by a mine laid by U-156.

Great Video - Boy do I miss diving the San Diego. My last dive on her was 2008. She's looks pretty intact still. David Rosenthal, Author of SCUBA Diving the Wrecks and Shores of Long Island NY

Travelin2Wit hey David thanks for the feedback! Have you been to the interactive dive map on squalusmarine.com? We are also hosting our second scuba outreach seminar in 2017. You might wanna check it out. Have anymore books for sale?

Very neat map....The Outreach looks interesting... "SCUBA Diving the Wrecks and Shores of Long Island, NY" is almost 400 pages of dive descriptions and photos of my favorite dives. It's available on Amazon.com. It has 13 stories (All true) on the USS San Diego. They range from entanglement on penetration dives to being bumped by blue sharks during deco.... (Will I blow my deco time ?) When I was diving the San Diego I started a project to map openings in the hull to the ship's plans. Alas, I can't dive anymore but I still love it.
I also wrote "Flying the Skies of Long Island, New York and 9/11 My Story" learning to fly out of MacArthur Airport on Long Island. Then there are some more eccentric books written under "Argus Witness", also on Amazon.com. All photos are real.

This is CRAZY...I'd be too freaked out finding human remains or something. It's a burial ground, freaks me out. ty

I work for a wholesale lobster company. I can get all the lobsters I want whenever I want. So we leave the locals alone. :)

Nice underwater photography and commentary. I saw plenty of bergalls as well as black sea bass and blackfish. You had decent visibility on this dive.
Do you dare put your anchor into that wreck or do you anchor well upstream in the sand and play out the anchor line?
I see I am 7 years later than upload. :-)

9:05 - those are probably scuttles. I don't know your location on the wreck, but anything below the main deck is probably going to be a scuttle instead of a porthole. Without the actual glass and ring in place, it is difficult to tell.

On what level do we know more about space compared to our oceans?

"we know more about space and the universe than we do about our oceans"
    I don't think so.

@@squalusmarine I appreciate the information, but if you take "universe" out of the equation then your statement _might_ be correct. Maybe we know more about space we HAVE explored than the entire ocean itself. However even without the inclusion of the universe, we have still explored more of the ocean than we have explored of our entire solar system. The ocean is vast, and the solar system is extremely vast. And the solar system is extremely vast, but the universe is titanic (pun intended)

    • @DBT1007
      @DBT1007 4 роки тому

@@Wilantonjakov umm.. imagine it in number. What we know about our ocean is like.. 500. But what we know about space is 2000. This is just example.
Yeah it's true space is more vast than our ocean. But we talk about the recorded or explored part here.
Humankind too focused on exploring the space than exploring the deep ocean all over the world.
Edit: humankind already mapped some planets in other solar system far far away but do you know about our real, detailed ocean floor map? Not the image from satellite. I mean the complex and detailed map. Like.. the vegetation, nitrogen cycle, fauna, unique phenomenon, etc. Things that can't be seen from satellite projection.
