I enjoy shooting all of my rifles. I have no problem buying those that people have refinished at some point or another over the years. I often get them pretty cheap. In the 4-600 range usually. As long as they haven't damaged anything that needs attention, they make for great rifles for hunting, plinking, and just enjoying overall. I'm sure from a collecting and financial return perspective I'm at a disadvantage with these type rifles. They all seem to climb in value though, just at a lower proprtional rate than original or investment grade guns.
There are no WW I 98k only there is the Kar 98a, The Gun you have shown is a modified G98 which has converted to a WWII spec K98. Ths was made most especially for the SS. Because the SS has to organize its Equipment besides the Wehrmacht.

I inherited a k98 , code147/ 1940 , all matching even the cleaning rod , original sling , 75% original blueing , unsanded wood . I took it to the big gun show in Louisville Kentucky 3 years ago , just out of curiosity, it's not for sale , I was told everything from $1000.00 to $4500.00 , So I still don't know what it's worth .
This is why the first tanks they were creating were called tractors, to be used as agricultural vehichles, to get around the Versailles Treaty. Anything to get around the Treaty, including cooperating and training with the Soviet military ( where they observed the concept of paratroopers for instance). Good stuff!

That lighter looks like the tool I use to make the sights darker in field competition. I put some water and carbide shut it closed light it when the acytelen gas is created, the black smoked light holds over the sights and the sun don’t reflect that much. The one you have might be something else but it looks exactly as the one I have.
Hugo shah, Your response brought a heavy dejavu over me taking me back to my HP rifle competition matches while serving in the USAF a hundred years ago. They issued us the same to blacken the sights on our M-1 Garland rifles. I still have mine, it’s made out of copper or brass with a small curved chrome dish resembling the shape of a radar dish, just behind the flame holder and flint striker wheel. They were used by miners in the early days. It has a small hook on the back so the miners could hook them to the front top of their helmets for a light source. You are right though it does resemble that little lighter he displayed.
Years ago, International Military Antiques sold original Waffenamt stamped flip top metal K98 muzzle covers by the Boatload, not Shure if they still have them. I think the unknown badges have something to do with sports, silver ingot is probably post war, lighter is probably the real deal, the waffenamt on it not so much.

I have 2 erma's, 3 Bnz's, 98k's i can name off the top of my head, use to have a Gewher 98 that was a all matching 1934 rework but the stock varnish job i didn't like and like a idiot i sold it :/ if I had gotten the varnish off i hands down woulda kept that piece. (Shoulda heard of pure alcohol which evidently woulda taken the varnish off with ease) Live and learn.

But on a side note: The “bnz.” Code was for Steyr-Daimler in Austria. Interesting to see that the stock is also original. Steyr stocks have a different bolt lever cutout, more elongated and “oval” compared to any of the other stocks...
Tbh you shoulda held on to that 1940 42 code 98K, i recall a gunbroker auction where a 1940 42 code 98K with a more blonde colored stock but they use red laminate glue for the stock and it sold for over $4,250 and it only came with a sling. That was a fun bidding war to watch.
K98 you show is definitely not from World War One! Those shorter versions of the Gewehr 98 from that time were totally different... Maybe they did shorten this one later on and refurbished it.
I carried a K 98 rifle while I hunted deer in Maine. When I tried to unload it I found melted snow had refrozen around the bolt and I had to sit with a loaded rifle in the truck till it defrosted. 10 below zero !
I imagine lots would sit on Santa’s lap for a nice PP, Luger, or even one of these. As much as I respect the 98 action these do not draw me in. More for you guys who love them.
I think the sling on the blond drp standard modell is an Israeli. I have an Israeli sling on my 1933 standard modell, best bang for the buck as they look correct but are cheap. Also the front sights are different from early to late, the early ones are not cut for the sight hood, late ones are. I like k98s!

Thanks for another great video. You gave some hints how to identify an old K98 leather sling from a new. Another giveaway is, that all leather stops smelling of leather after all there’s years. Many of the GI's that were on ships had to pull their bolt and put them in a barrel. When they got off the ship they grabbed a bolt and stuck it in their gun. Many of the the guns with miss-matched bolts were brought back at the end of the war by soldiers.
Legacy doesn’t really know very much about K98k’s, just the basics.... and that is well known in the K98k collecting community. They’ve even sold a few that they have described as matching, but weren’t. The WWI rifle he had was being shown as a K98k saying that “not much had changed from WWI to WWII”. There was no such thing as a K98k in WWI. The Kar98a was the closest thing and there are pretty big differences between the Kar98a and the K98k. This one shown in the video has K98k characteristics, but a WWI receiver. It was most likely a Gewehr 98 made into a K98k, which is totally plausible. It’s just the information he is presenting is inaccurate. He’s making it sound like the same rifle was produced during both wars, which it wasn’t.

For those of you that don’t know, Gew 98 to 98k conversions are a collectors subject themselves, and highly sought after. They’re usually pretty interesting rifles from a logistic standpoint. Something I’d pick up if it passes assessment

I've seen a handful of those, would be really neat if ya had a RFV marked 98K but i recall only seeing 1 and it was a 2/27G code rifle, if I recall the 2/27G rifles number in the 3-5K number of rifles made for that production year. Still tho its really neat ya got two DRP 98K's.

Have you made any videos about the cal .22 Lr, Mauser rifles made during the early 30’s for civilian marksmanship training. I have one my father brought back after the war and gave to me. It’s in excellent condition and shoots like a match grade .22. It has all matching numbers and the Mauser stamps on the action and stock, however I can’t seem to find any model numbers on it . I was able to research the serial number and it was manufactured in 1932. I’m looking for more info on it to research. Again great video thanks.

I do indeed. Also at K Mart next to the checkout counter were wood hoop barrels. The Barrels contained all manner of WWII and WWI rifles. They were Japanese, Italian, German, British, etc. all in rough shape mostly. I remember pulling some out to look at. All you needed was a drivers license to purchase. The prices were in the 35 to 45 dollar range. I never bought any but now wish I had.
@@para1324 I didn't realize K-Mart sold war-surplus rifles, too! I can still in my mind see exactly the M1 display at my local Woolworth store, which was in an indoor mall. I was only 8 or 9 years old at the time, so I couldn't have bought one, but many times I tried to work the actions on those rifles, which were locked to a pillar display rack in the middle of the floor in the sporting goods section, which was in the back. Good times, good times...
J.C.Penny here in the early to mid 70`s they had one big row of M-I` s for $150 but they were all mix and match rattle traps then they had a equal sized row of 7 mm bolt action mausers that were in seemingly better condition also for $150. Even as a young teenager I knew enough of guns as to steer away from those particular M-I`s As almost every one back then knew a vet who carried one. Always wanted to buy one of those Mausers but never did though my parents allowed me to have my own guns. I was like a lot of country kids , worked on farms and run a trapline in the winter always looked at the rack of rifles they had for years when we took trips to town to go shopping but still never got one could kick myself now as 7mm seems to be a bit scarce in a Mauser these days. But I always told myself maybe for the better as the barrels may have been shot out ,but I think it was the condition of the M-I`s that led me not to buy one. Correction: The rifle @1:25 is a reworked Gew98 rifle modified to meet K98k specs. Actual K98k production started in the mid to late 1930's.

They did have a k98 in world war I only to certain units

Anyone remember when you could buy M1 Garands at Wool-Worths for less than $100 in the sporting goods section? (early-1980s, I mean!!)
I do indeed. Also at K Mart next to the checkout counter were wood hoop barrels. The Barrels contained all manner of WWII and WWI rifles. They were Japanese, Italian, German, British, etc. all in rough shape mostly. I remember pulling some out to look at. All you needed was a drivers license to purchase. The prices were in the 35 to 45 dollar range. I never bought any but now wish I had.
@@para1324 I didn't realize K-Mart sold war-surplus rifles, too! I can still in my mind see exactly the M1 display at my local Woolworth store, which was in an indoor mall. I was only 8 or 9 years old at the time, so I couldn't have bought one, but many times I tried to work the actions on those rifles, which were locked to a pillar display rack in the middle of the floor in the sporting goods section, which was in the back. Good times, good times...

No, but I remember when you could buy 1909 Argentine Mauser rifles and carbines from Sears & Roebuck for $85.
J.C.Penny here in the early to mid 70`s they had one big row of M-I` s for $150 but they were all mix and match rattle traps then they had a equal sized row of 7 mm bolt action mausers that were in seemingly better condition also for $150. Even as a young teenager I knew enough of guns as to steer away from those particular M-I`s As almost every one back then knew a vet who carried one. Always wanted to buy one of those Mausers but never did though my parents allowed me to have my own guns. I was like a lot of country kids , worked on farms and run a trapline in the winter always looked at the rack of rifles they had for years when we took trips to town to go shopping but still never got one could kick myself now as 7mm seems to be a bit scarce in a Mauser these days. But I always told myself maybe for the better as the barrels may have been shot out ,but I think it was the condition of the M-I`s that led me not to buy one. By the way Piqua, Ohio is where this store was
