Michael Bay can make great corny action flicks from time to time. I still to this day think The Island with Ewan McGregor is one of the most underrated sci-fi flicks of the last twenty years.

I’d give this the “buy it on 4K blu ray” rating. Despite its absurd qualities, the writing is surprisingly smart. The writer weaved actual character development and heartfelt moments into the non-stop action. We barely have any time to see Bay’s weaknesses as a director because it’s so fast-paced. But he still made time for character beats amidst the chaos. I felt strong emotions throughout the entire ride, and if that’s not successful filmmaking, I don’t know what is.

I was actually apart of the original test audience for this movie back in November. The movie was overall pretty solid, but the ending absolutely ruined it for me and the other people in my row. We asked for it to be changed in the questionnaire, I'm curious if they kept it the same or if they actually changed it.
@@jd_alsobrook spoiler warning for others reading this comment During Eiza Gonzalez' introductory scene, she arrives at a really bad car crash. There's a girl stuck in a car seat with a pipe through her chest. Eiza's character is calm and rational through the whole process, and gets her taken care of. It's important to note that the only purpose of this scene was to show how great Eiza is at her job. She knows what to do, how to do it, and to showcase how she's able to remain calm and collected throughout the process. These are all traits her character excels at throughout the movie. Fast forward to the final act. Jake and YaYa have basically been forced by the police to reroute the ambulance towards a hospital. (multiple roadblocks and such, iirc). There's snipers posted up on the roof of the hospital, and they're ready to take a shot at Jake and only Jake, because he's the one responsible for everything that has transpired. Jake gets shot, and the swat team immediately pulls in. They knock this man who's bleeding out onto the ground, stomp on him, etc etc and let him bleed out right in front of a hospital. They arrest his brother YaYa, and take the wounded officer (who's been used as a hostage by the brothers for the entire film) to safety and get him proper medical treatment. This whole time, no one bothers to ask where the EMT who saved the officers life is at, or more importantly, where's the money these brothers threw away their livez trying to get? Somehow, in a crowd of like 100 cops, 50 reporters, and hundreds of citizens, no one noticed a girl sneaking into the van and making out with a dufflebag full of money. This next scene feels likes its from an entirely different movie altogether. The whole scene takes like 5-10 minutes long and it's basically just still shots the entire time. This movie was a super fast paced action movie, but for some reason they decided to end it with 5 minute long stills. Eiza walks into the hospital, steals a folder from the medical files when the nurse walks away, then heads to a different floor. She gets to the little girl's room (the one from the beginning of the movie), and just looks at her for like 3-4 minutes, not moving the entire time. Then she drops a huge wad of cash next to her bed and walks out, moves to a different city with the remaining millions of dollars. There's so much wrong here. One, I get that Jake's character was a criminal that would most likely get a life sentence, but still, why would the cops just stomp on him when he's bleeding? Why wouldn't they take him inside?? Second, how does no one notice a girl making off with millions of dollars???
I had great fun with this movie. It was awesome entertainment. Gyllenhall was hilariously evil. The chase and explosions were everything. This is a proper popcorn movie and we need those.

Pleasantly entertaining perfectly sums up this film, although it felt tad long. I'd have preferred if 30 - 45 minutes were left on the cutting room floor and they didn't bother with some characters that are introduced in and around past the halfway mark, but the film was a good time. The action is unrelenting from when it hits and the driving sequences for the most part were well executed, but some of the cinematography was annoying (those shots where the camera spins in and out of focus oŕ zooms either in or out of shot at like 200 miles an hour) and the humour for the most part misses it's mark. Performances were a mixed bag but with the female paramedic being the bright spark here. Generally though the film exceeded my expectations, I thought it was good. Had this been released during proper blockbuster season though this would have died in the stampede. They did the right thing releasing this just before. 6/10 for me, but would recommend this to everyone once it hits streaming services. It's worth a watch, you'll have fun with it if you haven't seen it yet.
Mr. Matoo, 👨🏿💻you wrote the film, Ambulance, 😀was pleasantly entertaining, 🍿a good time, worth a watch, and exceeded🙂 your expectations, right? 🤨😏In addition, you were pleased Universal released the film 🙂👏🏿ahead of their blockbuster releases. Thanks
@Gregory Jenkins That's correct. I honestly thought the film was going to be terrible, so it very well exceeded expectations there. Again I thought it was a fun time. It wasn't great, but I thought it was good. Regarding my comment about being happy it didn't come out during blockbuster season, I said that because I feel it would have been one of the weaker releases (with films like Bullet Train coming during the Summer, to name just one film) and I reckon it would've tanked. I haven't checked to see how much money Ambulance has made so far globally, but I'd be willing to bet the decision to release this movie now has given it a higher chance of obtaining a degree of financial success, whereas I don't think it would've done if it was competing with upcoming movies like Bullet Train. If Universal were deciding to release it within the next few weeks, it would then be competing with The Northman (the more I see of The Northman, the more I'm backing it to end up as this year's FOTY) and Operation Fortune. Even a week ago, if Ambulance had come out then, it would have competed with Morbius (OK, that isn't much stern resistance tbh) and Sonic The Hedgehog 2! Blockbuster season I'd say has just properly kicked off, and I reckon if Ambulance had come out around now, it wouldn't have survived amongst the competition, so yep, I'm happy they decided to release it a couple weeks ahead of all of these other films coming out 😊
I watch all your movie reviews even the ones I'm not planning on watching. Love you're voice and how you present yourself. Been watching for years. Love you J.

I'm glad Gonzalez had a decent part. She's stunningly gorgeous and seems to be a good actress so I was excited to see her in Godzilla versus Kong only to have her role be ridiculously bland and predictable. She definitely is someone I'd like to see in more films getting a chance to shine.
Hyperbole is a legitimate trope. It just has to be handled nimbly confidently and even elegantly. It seems that is MB' s signature. Much needed booster shot in these depressing times. Loved it.

Cant speak for rest, but Hopkins definitely did it for the money. He had little to no material to work with in the movie. And I’m willing to bet some signed on for the historical value of the movies.
Yeah no. Jake is very clearly enjoying the hell out of this role. He's having all the fun playing a completely unrepentant Hans Gruber inspired villain (Though Jake's character is more of a dumbass that wishes he was a mastermind like Gruber). While everyone else has to worry about being all sympathetic and likable so that the audience is behind them, Jake gets to do pretty much whatever the hell he wants.
I was about 35 minutes into this movie when I came to the decision that I could either keep watching and *maybe* throw up from all the non-stop quick and chaotic Michael Bay cuts/explosions/drone shots/etc., or I could leave. I've seen a few Michael Bay films, so I'm pleased to say that even though I did walk out of the movie, I'm 99% sure I still know what happens at the end. And even if I am 99% wrong about that, I'm 100% sure I still don't care.

Michael Bay can make great corny action flicks from time to time. I still to this day think The Island with Ewan McGregor is one of the most underrated sci-fi flicks of the last twenty years.
Wtf, I didn't even know he directed The Island. I couldn't even think of the possibility of liking a MB movie that much
I love that movie too. Doesn't get the praise it deserves
The Island was awesome
Don't forget 20 year-old Scarlett Johansson
YES! The island is super underrated!
I was prepared for this to get a thrashing purely for being a Bay movie. but I'm actually really surprised at how positive of a review this was.
I was a little excited for this movie before, but now I actually might need to make it a priority to go see it while it's in cinemas. Sounds like it could be a fun time.

“It’s Michael Bay season baby” is a shirt I would absolutely wear
I’d give this the “buy it on 4K blu ray” rating. Despite its absurd qualities, the writing is surprisingly smart. The writer weaved actual character development and heartfelt moments into the non-stop action.
We barely have any time to see Bay’s weaknesses as a director because it’s so fast-paced. But he still made time for character beats amidst the chaos. I felt strong emotions throughout the entire ride, and if that’s not successful filmmaking, I don’t know what is.
I’m glad you said 4K. Are you a big physical media collector?
I actually think this is Michael Bay's best film! It's like Michael Bay on steroids!!

Favorite MB film has to be Pain and Gain. A coked out The Rock has to be one of the greatest things ever. Super dark comedy and a bit of a tragedy. By far his best in my opinion!
I hated it back in my "Michael Bay ruined Transformers so he sucks" days (I'm not proud of that) but this comment alone made ne want to revisit it.
I just rewatched on Netflix, legitimately one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. I was hoping maybe it was just hazy memory but naw, it was hot garbage
I mean kinda fucked up he made a comedy about a real life kidnapping, like those dudes really did kidnap and torture the guy (and the victim was still alive to see it on screen)
I know right? Loved that movie, I think is really funny.
And we learn that he and Zach Snyder may be gay
I was actually apart of the original test audience for this movie back in November. The movie was overall pretty solid, but the ending absolutely ruined it for me and the other people in my row. We asked for it to be changed in the questionnaire, I'm curious if they kept it the same or if they actually changed it.
Come back and edit this comment when you see it,don't forget to @ me too
What was the original ending?
@@jd_alsobrook spoiler warning for others reading this comment
During Eiza Gonzalez' introductory scene, she arrives at a really bad car crash.
Yea they changed the ending
What was the ending you saw?
I had great fun with this movie. It was awesome entertainment. Gyllenhall was hilariously evil. The chase and explosions were everything. This is a proper popcorn movie and we need those.
I really liked him as Mysterio, so this should be fun.
@@user-is7xs1mr9y Jake was the highlight of this movie. He was good as Mysterio but I wouldn't say that role was phenomal or anything. Him in this movie was super entertaining.
Did Michael Bay finally learn how to direct a movie? Man what a time to be alive, I hope he keeps up the good work and doesn't direct more Pearl Harbors. Now I wish this was the Michael Bay that directed Transformers and not the one that did.
I feel like these types of movies are what MB excels in.
Do you like the action genre?
Michael Bay movies are *immune* to WOKEISM....but there is this one female cop who...😁
@@BushinRyuCat MB in general won't make something woke. Hell, if anything, MB did the one thing most wokies claim to do, but do it badly... Make a strong & powerful female character (Eiza Gonzalez's character). Fucking Bay of all people doing it.
One of the most Michael Bay things to happen in this move was the scene when the x soldier took a wrong turn In to a dead end and had to reverse and 2 cop cars just drove right past the ambulance and flew off the hill..... and all I could was just smile. 😶 well needed 😌

I think Michael Bay was like "I'm sorry for giving you guys crap for making Transformers movies, so I'm going back to basics".
He did admit he should’ve stopped at 3, so kinda
Isn't going back to basic is basically the same thing he always do in his non Transformers movie? The guy has a formula for his movies and he used it in almost every movie he made
@@800Ms-k6n I meant basics from The Rock.
@@thevagabond1314 He should have listened.

As a former EMT in Los Angeles, let me say you might be extremely surprised at what gets done in an ambulance going 70 miles an hour. Not saying they live.... but still.
I'm glad this did well. This feels like the same type of energy he applied to Pain & Gain which is one of my favourite Bay films
Critically maybe. But so far it only made $32 million against it's $40 million budget

My favorite movies from Michael Bay have and always will be the transformers franchise, growing up watching them was an experience I wouldn't give for anything.
The explanation of “movie DLC” just appearing at the end out of nowhere is how I felt while watching “The Batman.”
Oh my God I love this term
Finally a way to explain those parts of movies that just don't seem to fit because it came out of the blue 😁
facts. In my opinion the Batman got so caught up in trying to make a dark, brooding world of gotham it forgot to make an actually believable storyline
Sounds like a good old fashioned action flick. In a day and age when Super Hero movies feels like they're just sniffing their own farts, this would be completely refreshing.
This! I agree! haha It's weird that we live in a world where a Michael Bay movie is considered refreshing! The more I hear about this movie, the more I want to see it honestly. As much as I laughed at Michael Bay's movies for years and years, now I wouldn't mind having a self aware bonkers action movie without any deep messages or trying to be part of a cinematic universe. Just having a good time while shoving popcorn to your face haha
@@bengirard1984 just saw this, its another lame pathetic crap fest from Bay.. horrendous dialog, every character is an idiot lol..bay can't keep the camera still for more than 5 seconds, the shaky cam garbage is so out dated.. and of course they try to make the black criminal guy sympathetic by the end.. nothing new from shallow clueless bay and liberal hollywood.
Michael Bay is one of my favorite directors. AmbuLAnce is a pretty surprisingly funny and entertaining movie, with loads of action, drama, and heart. The acting was well done and I'm going for a second viewing today. 🌟🌟🌟🌟½ outta 5
I love that they used drones for the dynamic camera work it really added to the action
Trailer spoiled everything. Still a good watch though
Maybe Universal Pictures had no idea how to market this so they just thrown in almost every important plot point because they knew what people expect from a Michael Bay movie. Can't expect any big surprise from his movies
I can't wait for the Ambulance sequel: Firetruck
So far Gyllenhaal has been a cop, a 911 operator, and now an EMT, has he been a firefighter yet? Lol
He has been a marine too (jar head)
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II...and this is why stage names exist. With a name like that, I would absolutely go by something else.
My favourite Michael Bay film would definitely have to be Transformers Dark Of The Moon, decent story with some of, if not the best action and spectacle in the series and Bay’s whole filmography in general.
Have you seen The Rock?
Oh. Someone is trolling. Lol. You know Jeremy HATES that movie. 😂😂😂😂
It’s a worse version of the first film on every way, and that film wasn’t even that good except for the action so nice try.

Coming this summer: Two brothers. In an ambulance. And then a meteor hit. And they ran as fast as they could, from giant cat cop monsters. And then a giant tornado came. And that's when things got knocked into 12th gear.
Saw Michael Bay's ‘Ambulance’ last night. The acting and action are GREAT! The only thing I didn't like was some of the decisions that some of the characters made which had to do with the script, but it's DEFINITELY a thrill ride! I suggest seeing it in IMAX on the biggest screen possible. 🙂🎬🚑💯
This movie is more entertaining than most modern MCU movies/shows. And I welcome it withy heart. Finally an old school action movie that is not a Disney formula that every studio wants to copy/paste now a days.

Love you J.
I would honestly love if Michael Bay could have toned down the hyper-stylized cuts and multiple camera angles but still keeping all the stunt work and action intact.

😆Most of us want 1995 back.
I managed to have a moment of empathy and catharsis with every single character in a Michael Bay movie about a heist and getaway. More of this please.
I'm glad Gonzalez had a decent part. She's stunningly gorgeous and seems to be a good actress so I was excited to see her in Godzilla versus Kong only to have her role be ridiculously bland and predictable. She definitely is someone I'd like to see in more films getting a chance to shine.
How did you enjoy Godzilla vs Kong?
Hyperbole is a legitimate trope. It just has to be handled nimbly confidently and even elegantly. It seems that is MB' s signature. Much needed booster shot in these depressing times. Loved it.
“Jake Gyllenhaal in a Michael Bay movie” is a sentence I never expected to say. I guess even the best of the best can’t live without a paycheck.
Actually he didn't do this for paycheck, he said in an interview that he has always wanted to be in a Michael Bay movie. Just to have some fun time working with him, I guess that's odd from him but hey I guess he had a lot of fun making this
Paycheck…. Working with the 4th highest grossing director of all time.. who have had actors like Anthony Hopkins, Sean Connery, Ed Harris, Jon Voight, Dwayne Johnson, Mark Wahlberg, Ewan McGregor, Bruce Willis, Scarlett Johansson, Billy Bob Thornton. Perhaps many wants to or enjoy working with him because of his style and his movies. Ever thought about that?
Are you a fan of Jake Gyllenhaal?
They should have just called this 5 star wanted level because I got some serious GTA V vibes from this movie.
I know this video is about the movie, but I must say your hair is amazing Jeremy. It has so much volume and body. I’m jealous, men have the most luxurious hair 😂 anyway, I always enjoy your reviews; they’re engaging and hilarious. Keep it up!
The only thing I didn’t like was that the “hot chick in a Michael Bay movie” kept getting prettier and prettier in every scene. 😛 She was to made up. She’s already a natural beauty. But I enjoyed the movie a lot! It was fun!
2 hours is the equivalent of 90 minutes for Michael Bay.
I respect Michael Bay simply because he fully acknowledges he has no interest in telling a compelling story, rather, he's just about that action! lol
Jake Gyllenhaal yelling and talking fast is always a win
"If you're a Michael Bay fan you are gonna love this one!"
Yea, if you are a Michael Bay fan you also like obscene explosions and poor story development.

Someone tell Ridley Scott, Tony Scott, John Frankenheimer, John Turtletaub, John McTiernan, Joe Carnahan, Richard Donner, Roger Donaldson, Paul Veroheven, Jonathan Hensleigh, John and Peter Hyams, Ted Kotcheff, David Leitch, Neveldene/Taylor, Jonathan Liebsman, Doug Liman, Dwight Little, Christopher McQuarrie, Wolfgang Petersen, Roger Spottiswoode, Oliver Stone, Len Wiseman, Robert Rodriguez, and all the others that EXPLOSIONS HAVE NO PLACE IN THEIR ACTION MOVIES!
Armageddon and TFDark of the moon, still his 2 best imo

I never have understood the issue people have with Michael Bay movies. They are what they are. If you hate him because of what he did with Transformers that's fine. But you cant deny they are mostly entertaining and you get exactly what you sign up for walking into a Michael Bay movie. They also made a butt-load of cash which speaks for itself.
I loved the transformers movies. I never understood the hate.
I’m not sure how this film will do box office-wise thanks to Sonic 2, but it’s definitely worth seeing in theaters. If you give Michael Bay a simple action plot with non-CGI characters, the man is capable of making movie magic. And the drone shots in this film were TIGHT! WOW WOW WOW!
Here's hoping that with all the new possibilities that drones bring that we can see a resurgence in practical effects. Some of the shots they got for this movie would of been impossible just 15 years ago.
