    Song:
OH, WHAT A MERRY CHRISTMAS DAY
From the animated film "Mickey's Christmas Carol" (1983)
    (Walt Disney / Carl Stalling)
Written by: Fredrick Searles & Irwin Kostal
    Lyrics:
Oh, what a merry christmas day
    Hear the joyous music play
    Bells are ringing
    choirs singing
Oh, what a merry christmas day
sharing the season of good cheer
with the ones we hold so dear
    friendly faces, warm embraces
Oh, what a merry christmas day
    snowflakes covered country lanes
    Jack Frost painted window panes
    twinkling stars on christmas trees
    oh, what happy memories
    gathered 'round a fireplace
fam'lies filled with love and grace
    from peaceful ember's glow
    blessed Yuletide spirits grow
    grow and grow
    grow and grow
Joy to the children far and near
what a won'drous time of year
isn't is just grand to say
    merry, merry christmas
    merry, merry christmas
Oh, what a merry christmas day!

The lyrics to this song were written by my father, Frederick Searles Jr (nickname “Bucky” Searles). I was at my 8th grade graduation party when Disney recorded this song. Dad spent a lot of time at Irwin Kostal’s house (and I was often there with him) while they wrote this. So so happy to find this on UA-cam. I love this song. Brings back good memories of time with my father (who has since passed away).

Awesome, this is one of my favorite Christmas melodies, heard it first in the Mickey Christmas Carol movie.

Back when "a well written song" meant the lyrics rhymed without any compromise. This tune is a great example of that. My, oh, my....how main stream music has fallen away. There are so-called songwriters today who think the words 'night' and 'life' rhyme. =/

      M. L. Having been a member of the Nashville Songwriter’s Association for a couple years, a lot of songwriting critics would prefer not to have all perfect rhymes because they aren’t “clever” or interesting enough - they would also say that the meaning comes before the rhyme, as long as it’s close. I’m personally fine with any similar consonants (like t and k)

Great points. My point is, it can take a great deal of time and effort to come up with great clever lines. However, it is, indeed, possible. I suppose for me, it's just a personal preference. I think Hammerstein and Sondheim are great examples. Personally, I think there are fewer things greater in this world than clever rhythmic rhymes. I'm guessing that I might be in the minority when it comes to my stance, and that's fine. Great rhymes do something to me that I can't explain. It's euphoric. I also believe that you need to let the song/music go where it takes you, as you mentioned. As a songwriter/musician/arranger, I love the challenge of stretching and manipulating thoughts and lines so that I can keep with my convictions and still express the same idea. It's incredibly challenging at times, but I love it. I'm not always perfect at it, but I guess I just like the fact that I recognize when I create a line that doesn't rhyme (Ha!). In my first comment, I was truly trying to make a point in stating that I know folks who truly think that 'life and 'night' rhyme. We all have opinions about what we consider to be good lyrics. But, factually, speaking, those two words do not rhyme, and that was my point. God bless! By His grace, M.L.
