In early 1781, Mozart was in Munich where his opera Idomeneo was premiered. He wrote the Quartet K.370 for Friedrich Ramm, principal oboe in the Bavarian Elector’s orchestra. “His dazzling career led to appearances in Italy, Paris, London and Berlin. Later he played chamber music with Beethoven.” This piece is full of virtuosity, and the oboe is pushed to the limit, especially in the upper register: the piece ends with a (rare) and thunderous F6. Mozart had met Ramm in Mannheim at the end of 1777 and was immediately captivated by the quality of his sound, which seemed to him to be of a ravishing purity. In this work he discovered the intimacy of chamber music: he avoided concertante writing by finding many subtle ways of integrating the voices, notably by carefully interweaving melody and counter-melody. The second movement is an aria in D minor of great emotional force, only thirty-eight bars long. The final rondeau features an extraordinary episode in which the oboist plays in 4/4 time while the strings continue their accompaniment in 6/8 time as if unaware of it. This section begins very ominously in the minor, and the tension is only relieved by the simultaneous return of the major mode and the compound measure. The reprise of the rondo theme shows Mozart’s taste for the high register of the oboe, as evident at times as his notorious predilection for the low register of the clarinet.” -All about Mozart

The jaunty playing by these 4 musicians is what chamber music ought to be: With a fleeting glance and a satisfied smile, they demonstrated that they like each other and really enjoy playing music together. How lovely! Occasionally one sees a group of musicians who appear to be disconnected from each other. A sad sight. This was exactly the opposite, and what an extraordinary performance they gave! Thank you so much for a first rate performance of a first rate composition.
This Quartet was on the first Mozart chamber music cassette that I ever bought, when I was about eighteen (I am now 53). I haven’t listened to a recording for years, and now I’m wondering why not?? What a lovely performance 👏🏻👏🏻.👍 to the players as well!

The standard of performances from this festival is simply phenomenal, some of the best available anywhere - and so consistent. that note at 9:09 is quite something.

When the oboe starts quacking at 13:38 this is the best bit. Mozart has a a habit of adding a bit of unexpected icing at the end of a piece when normally there is a natural end. Well played.

I love the way the musicians move with the music. I believe all musicians do that, but these folks move more freely and enthusiastically than most. It's a style, like other styles, but this one is great fun to watch. They seem to enjoy it so much!

Listening to this music lets some deeply repressed emotions resurface and really helps with processing them. The advertisement breaks the immersion, but at least this video grants _some_ place to go for one looking to work out any potential emotions, and even just to listen to some nicely written and played music. 🙏🏻
I just find it so amazing ! I came here because I am playing some beginner string quartet (for some of them they're playing their 2nd or even 3rd instrument) with some friends where I play the oboe instead of violin 1. And I just love here how the oboe can really differentiate from the strings as well as blend in so well !

America are so much more conservative when it comes to movement and the visual aspect of their performance (by no means I'm implying they are more conservative in expression) and not being used to seeing European ensembles as often as I would wish, it always comes across as bit obnoxious before I get accustomed to it. Beautiful performance as always from this festival.
