Hey hollywoodfrodo, just want to say thanks a million for all your efforts in making these 101 Tasker tutorials. I've learnt a lot from your lessons and they seemed to sink into my thick skull better than some other guides; I "hear" you and not some idiotic music ranting in the bakground. Forgive me... not coming on to you as such (cute as you may be), I just love your voice! Its calm, composed and the sprinkle of humor here and there adds that touch of "je ne sais quoi". Keep up the good work hollywoodfrodo.
Geez - thanks. These are older (older version of tasker and older version of Android) but thankfully the overall principles are the same and I'm glad people still find them useful. Thanks for the flattering compliments! :-)
I'm coming from IOS. I'm watching your tasker videos right now. I literally just came in my shorts nine times. I need more tasker files to figure out how you are doing all this stuff and learn to write one myself so I can make it a clean ten times!
Live For Technology Best way to learn is to just start using it. Try - fail - ask - try - fail - ask. Watch videos - build along - then try your own stuff. Just imagine you create something totally different than anything I've done here - that'll get you your tenth time! lol
Thanks for the reply :) One question if you please. I am trying to find your way to activate auto voice when I press the button from my headphones do you know if this is possible? Thanks for your time
Depends on the headphones. If they have a button press/method built-in to call a voice assistant, then first time you press that after installing Auto-Voice you should get pop-up box on phone showing all options for Voice Assistant (Google Voice Search, Auto-Voice, any others) and you can select AutoVoice and Always. If it's a generic BT Button press, there is a setting inside AutoVoice you should be able to enable to intercept that.
hollywoodfrodo hi again. The option with Bluetooth it's okay I did that before but with the hands-free from HTC it doesn't respond I don't know why. do you think that becuase I am using a custom room might possibly blocking some tasker actions so they don't walk properly? I am using android revolution HD on HTC one m8
Konstadino Pure Impossible to know for sure, but always a possibility with custom ROMs... I would just try various settings in AutoVoice/TAsker to see if you can get it to work. There's nothing else specific that I would know of to do.
Great tutorial, thanks. I've got a question. When you answer the call, is there an easy way to hang up without using the End call button? I would like to be able to end the call without touching the phone.
naihanchin Kempo Not 100% sure what you're asking.... But root is completely separate from Developer settings. Anyone can turn on developer settings on their phone. That is NOT the same as having root privileges.
as you know ..if you repeatedly tap androids ver number (if i remember) you end up with more developer options ..Do you really need root..sorry i have been watching lot of tasker vids lately. and have lots of stuff in my head..some apps that needed root in the past, have newer vers that no longer need rooting to work, is all..I understand developer options aren't root ..But some features seem useful with tasker ..haven't looked over those menus lately, but i think i did see a menu that let you track button pushes etc
naihanchin Kempo that's what I figured you meant. yeah, enabling developer options gets you some things - root gets you some others. Root is only necessary if it's necessary. I rooted my Asus tablet mostly to freeze all their crapware. I rooted my Galaxy Note 10.1 2012 tablet because Samsung decided to never update it after JellyBean and I'd like to put KitKat on there. My old S3 was also rooted to give me access to do a few things I couldn't do without it (but not a lot). However, my current phone (Droid Turbo) isn't rooted, though if there were an easy method, it probably would be. Root is never necessary, but it gives you more control of things.
Hello, this is my first time on this channel so I have no idea if this question has already been answered but I have the 'textme' app and was wondering how do I create an event like phone ringing inside this application. It seems like I can only do either/ or and not both. When I touch the '+' sign while in profiles the application option comes up along with the event option but what I want to do is cause an event to happen in the application. When I go to all of the application options phone ringing is not an option unless I only touch event and in that case it doesn't allow me to apply it to an application. Please help and hope my explanation did not confuse you.
cee posley Not 100% sure I fully understand. If you want multiple contexts/triggers in a single profile, you long press the first trigger and it will pop-up up a box for you to select a 2nd trigger. If you are looking to make something happen IF the app is active AND your phone rings/incoming call then this is what you'd do. If you're looking for something different, you'll have to clarify for me.
Do you have a tutorial JUST FOR READING whatsapp messages as I dont think this works with whatsapp ? Any help will be great as I have searched the net and no examples seem to work ?
I'm not sure about an IF statement, but you could definitely create a profile that automatically ends calls if a caller is not in your contact list. I believe creating a separate profile to do this would be the only way. You'd basically have one profile that was based on callers IN your contacts based on the set up in this video, then a second profile based on callers NOT in your contacts list with a task to end the call.
So I was trying to think of a way to stop the caller notification when the answer button is pressed instead of voice activated. Every phone turns off the screen when it goes up to your ear for a phone call. How about setting up a command that stops the caller notification if the screen turns off? I'm posting this last second before I have to get on with my day, so I won't be able to try this until much later or even until tomorrow.
Not 100% clear on what your goal is here, but yeah, Tasker has a proximity sensor trigger (what triggers that black screen) so you can use that to trigger anything.
Can't "End call" on my phone save a special ADB command is entered every time the phone starts (unless there's some other workaround). Also have to silence ringer to get the phone to hear me.
Yeah, some features have changed over the years due to Android continually "increasing security" which causes certain features not to work unless the phone is rooted or you use the ADB style work around.
On newer version of Android, get voice doesn't work if the screen is locked. Android has continually increased the security "features" on their phone which makes some things no longer possible.
I am running lollipop 4.0 galaxy s5 . I am new to tasker and enjoy your tutorials. When I get to the action to take call its in red and says unavailable for this device.is their a way around that or something else I can do ?
+Michael Groves Yeah, actually Lollipop (which is 5.0+) removed tasker's ability to take a call. Very annoying. Although Android gets better with each update, it also loses a bit of openness with each update and such is the case here. There is no easy/good work around. You can check the Google Groups Tasker Forum to see what people have come up with, but I myself haven't found anything to replace it... :-(
Hi, The 'Take Call' is not available on my phone. Tasker says, this action is unavailable on this device.I have un-rooted phone. Is it necessary to have a rooted phone to activate the take call action?
On most devices, no, it is not necessary to be rooted, but in Android all devices are not the same. If it's blocked out on your phone then it's something you unfortunately won't be able to do. If you were rooted you might, but there's no guarantee. It's just like on my phone (the Droid Turbo) they made it so 3rd party apps can't turn on/off the Mobile Hotspot. I don't think they did it intentionally, just a byproduct of their engineering and programming probably. It sucks, but that's just the way it goes sometimes.
Not easily anymore with current Android Versions... You might still be able to do it using AutoVoice plugin, but it would be a little more complicated than what's in this lesson.
hollywoodfrodo , thanks for the reply I subscribe and so far I got all the steps but I can't take call cuz it says my phone is not capable , and I didn't have to root , do you think if I root it will work
Sorry, I do not. AutoVoice is one of many "AutoApp" tasker plugins. If you search, there are vids about it on UA-cam and the creator of AutoVoice also has instructions on his website. It is not "easy" to learn, but if you put in the time, you can master it and it opens up a world of possibilities.
Hi. I did that with the announce caller and sometimes it works others not but besides that I want to hear the name when I have my headphones plugged do you know off it can do that? I tried but it doesn't announce it.
Doesn't announce at all or announces it through your phone speaker but not your headphones? If the later, you could try changing the stream on the Say command to another stream and see if it works on any of those. Generally, if you have headphones on, anything through the Media stream should play through the headphones.
Jacek Fic Doesn't require rooting, though not all functions/features work exactly the same on all phone models or Android versions. But in general this should work for most phones without an issue, but might require tweaking for your specific phone.
I tried this profile but it was silent when I received a call. It didnt even play my ringtone. it changed the orientation from landscape mode since I use this in my car on a mount which was unwanted. Also the call came thru very low in volume. When I finally decided to answer the call by pushing the button like normal it then had a pop up that showed it failed. I didnt read what the pop up said but it was probably associated with get voice.
dont know if it makes a difference that Im on ICS or not but I would really like this profile to work. I really dont want to waste space on an additional app to do this.
asylus99 Should work on ICS as well as any other version of Android. The Voice Input feature on your particular phone MIGHT be programmed to silence other sounds... Not sure, but that could be the issue. It's hard to troubleshoot from afar and with Android and fragmentation, no two devices are exactly the same so you might have to take what's given here and play around with it and try different things to find something that works on your device. That is the blessing and curse of Android!
+Jason Fernandes Hmmm... That's actually the Georgia Bulldog Fight Song... (But the tune they use is stolen from "Battle Hymn of the Republic" so maybe Texas uses the same tune...
First of all I'd like to say thank you for each and every one of your videos I love every one of them and they are truly a blessing to me they help me so much. Also there are few things since I've changed from my Note 5 to the new S8 that I'm missing the Misc menu is missing first of all second of all there are a few things that are in Red & X out that I cant get Such as Take Call is one of them do I need to be rooted or am I just totally screwed.. 🦂BeezyGee🦂
The things that are in red are not available on your phone. Basically, every new version of Android adds security "features" that lock down some things such as "take call" and don't allow 3rd party apps to have access to them. They would only be available if you root your phone... Otherwise, you just have to learn to live without them. :-(
Nice. But in my Tasker it has items in red with an 'X' under them, obviously meaning they are disabled or not available. I have Secure Settings but I can't find the equivalent of the "Take Call" action. I am stuck there and can't continue with the rest of the tutorial, and I really want to continue. IDEAS? Anyone? Please?
Android/Google removed the ability for 3rd party apps to "answer a call" which is why you see the red X. There are not any other easy solutions/workarounds since that is completely blocked by Android Security now. The only other possibility is using the AutoInput Tasker Plugin which can emulate screen touches - depending on your phone that might be able to answer using touch emulation...
it works fine..but people not in my list are getting read the number. ie: 1 billion, 8 hundred million, 6 hundred.....is calling. how do i get it to just read the area code then the number?
The easiest way is only have it announce people in your contacts. But if you want it to announce the phone numbers of those who aren't then you'll have to take the number and split it up into an array of each number then have Tasker say each array (each number). It's not too complex if you're familiar with programming and arrays, but not the simplest thing to do either.
Google removed this from Android a couple of versions ago. It would only be available if you're rooted. There isn't an easy work around that I know of. Depending on your phone you could possibly try using AutoInput to emulate screen touches to answer the phone...
hollywoodfrodo OK thank you sir .root activate any problems for my phone and me.whats app number 9791551227 please contact me chat for you sir help me thank you
Thanks. Yeah, it can be a bit daunting. I haven't done much with it myself in the last year or so... Life has been busy and doing stuff with tasker takes lots of time and patience.
Yeah, life tends to interfere with what you really wanna do sometimes. Again, your videos are much appreciated, and the best that I've found. I guess, after I get through them all and play with it, I'll figure it out. It looks like a big part of it is putting in the time to learn where everything is at. Honestly, I haven't even read the 'User Guide' yet either, so I really shouldn't be complaining. lol Logically, it's no different than programming in most any language -- if this, then that, but there's LOTS of paths to go down to find things. Maybe one day you'll write a small book (with pictures!! lol), on Tasker. I bet you could do okay with an 'eBook.' I'd buy one in a second. I just looked, and the Play Store is showing a million downloads on Tasker. If you could sell an eBook to even .5% of those people, and probably even more of the new buyers, at maybe even $7 or something, that wouldn't be a bad payday. lol I know the power of the program, and it's amazing, but it's a bit confusing for my 57 year old brain. haha I know a little about frontend development for the Web, but Tasker isn't HTML, CSS, or Javascript. With 'regular' programming, everything is kind of right in front of you.
Hmmm... I have an S3 running KitKat... Could be a need for a delay or something. It's hard to troubleshoot without seeing the phone and seeing exactly how you have the profile and tasks set up.
You can export and import profiles, but I do not have these any more. I actually switched over to an iphone last year. I miss Tasker, but decided to give Apple a try and see how I like it...
i think i got it i placed a call end after the wait at step 1 and did a if %CNUM ~ !C:ANY, it should mean if a incoming callers number is not in my contact it should hang up. now i got to wait for some one i don't know to call
Thanks - I'm aware of that - lots of things you can do if you have ROOT. But since fewer and fewer people are rooting their phones these days, I try to stick to things that don't need root. I don't root mine anymore because I'm basically "leasing" my phone and turning it back in to upgrade to the latest/greatest every year. It sucks - I wish these type of features could be enabled through Developer settings without needing root.
Usama Khalid Like anything with Android due to various phones/Android Versions/etc, it's not always cut and dry. You have to play with tasks and try different things sometimes to get them working just right. Nothing is 100% foolproof unfortunately...
hollywoodfrodo But it worked for me 1st time now when i say it to take it or hang it up it not work from this step only can you give me a solution? I have tested it several time by attaching flash with every action but flash runs and it takes my voice command perfectly but not triggering to take call or hang up.
Usama Khalid I'm afraid it don't have a perfect solution for you. Could be so many different things depending on your phone/Android version/etc. You can try possibly throwing a Wait command for 1-3 seconds in there in various places to see if a little delay helps - something could be "interrupting" the task as it's playing out.
Okay thanks, iam trying to find what is going wrong my device is HUAWEI Honour holly/3C Running android 4.4 and iam using an old version of tasker because the new 1 is not stable with my phone

One question if you please.
I am trying to find your way to activate auto voice when I press the button from my headphones do you know if this is possible?

Depends on the headphones. Great tutorial, thanks. I've got a question. When you answer the call, is there an easy way to hang up without using the End call button? I would like to be able to end the call without touching the phone.
Not really... At least not that I know of. Because the mic is being used for the call, other apps can't "listen in" for voice commands...

There's a "Missed Call" option... Which would trigger after the phone stops ringing if unanswered.

Android/Google removed the ability for 3rd party apps to "answer a call" which is why you see the red X. The only other possibility is using the AutoInput Tasker Plugin which can emulate screen touches - depending on your phone that might be able to answer using touch emulation...

Google removed this from Android a couple of versions ago. It would only be available if you're rooted. There isn't an easy work around that I know of. Depending on your phone you could possibly try using AutoInput to emulate screen touches to answer the phone...
hollywoodfrodo OK thank you sir .root activate any problems for my phone and me.whats app number 9791551227 please contact me chat for you sir help me thank you
I'm still so lost in Tasker. I can still only do the most basic things. The videos are great though.
With 'regular' programming, everything is kind of right in front of you.
hi,
I tried on my galaxy s5 with no luck at all...itried with autovoice and without it btw...
Hmmm... I have an S3 running KitKat... Could be a need for a delay or something. It's hard to troubleshoot without seeing the phone and seeing exactly how you have the profile and tasks set up.
Can u send me profiles call 📱?it can export import?
You can export and import profiles, but I do not have these any more. I actually switched over to an iphone last year. I miss Tasker, but decided to give Apple a try and see how I like it...
i think i got it i placed a call end after the wait at step 1 and did a if %CNUM ~ !C:ANY, it should mean if a incoming callers number is not in my contact it should hang up. now i got to wait for some one i don't know to call
Take call no longer works on Samsung S5
+JPComputerSolutions I see below it is lollipop not tasker great series
+JPComputerSolutions Thanks - yeah, Android likes to take away a thing or two with every new version. :-(
hollywoodfrodo SecureSettings plugin can re-enable take call action on LP and MM... But needs ROOT
Only worked for 1st time.
Okay thanks, iam trying to find what is going wrong my device is HUAWEI Honour holly/3C
Running android 4.4 and iam using an old version of tasker because the new 1 is not stable with my phone
