I think the W210 may not be a "classic" in the sense that you seem to be referring to in this video, but it will be eventually. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that they are better cars than what came after them. I had a 1998 E430 Sport, given to me by a client when it wouldn't pass the CA smog test. It was a one owner car with 300,000 miles on it, and still going very strong. I drove it for a couple years, and up to almost 350,000 miles before i sold it. They are definitely one of the reliable "greats" from Mercedes Benz, in my opinion. I dread the day you can no longer get decent ones for cheap on the used market. That will be a sad day indeed.

@@bosshognit I think that is very common, as the transmission fluid typically never got changed on a lot of cars. No matter what the milage is on one that you buy, the first thing should be to change the trans fluid and filter.

I currently own a 98’ E320 Elegance, finished in tourmaline green with beige interior. It is a fantastic car to drive, and with relatively simple mechanics compared to the W211. For me this car represents the last of the old Mercedes as well as the beginning of the new era, it has the essence of the classics but with some hints of what was about to come in the future. I know it has its faults, mainly the rust and some interior quirks, but my god, it really has presence and a certain charm to it, its the type of Mercedes that you could look from far and with no doubt say “that’s a Mercedes”, unlike the new ones that aren’t really that distinctive from other brands.

  • @torivar
    @torivar 3 роки тому +27

The rust issue on the W210 huge if you don't live in a dry area. In Europe Mercedes tried to do good and had an extended warranty where they changed body panels to try to save their reputation. They even changed the roof on some cars due to rust, that is insane! It's the water based paint that is partly to blame. The W124 from 1994 and to the end also had the new paint and they rust more and in a different way than the older years. But a W210 is very comfortable to drive and they run for 5-600000 miles if you live where they don't rust away.

As the owner of two previous W210s, 1999 E55 AMG and a 2001 E55 AMG, and currently a 2001 E320 4M. I can attest to the reliability of the M112/3 engines. I also have a 2004 S55 AMG Kompressor with 273k miles on it. As you said, Mercedes did an excellent job on the engine design, and I have be very happy with all three W210s. None of them have had any issues that needed a workshop visit - the E55s were under warranty too. I also have a 1986 300E with 46k (purchased from the original owner with all maintenance receipts at the dealer, and there is a clear difference in the design philosophy between the two. My experience so far with the M104 is in my 1999 S320 W140. I have been very pleased with the vehicle - the power, smoothness, and fuel mileage. It has 121k so I am unsure if the head has been removed or not. It has ice cold A/C, etc. It does need a replacement PSE under the rear seat, which I am working on. procuring and coding to the car. The other S-Class I have is a W221 S600, with 38k or so, but that is almost off topic for this video. I have owned to W123s - 1982 and 1983 300D, and they were reliable just like their reputation says.
The W210 seems to be the last E-Class that does not have "blanks" or missing options (which is a pet peeve of mine) as all the wood panels are made for the cars options. I miss those days. I understand now if a center console wood panel is ordered, it has seven holes or switches (including hazard switch) and blanks are fitted into the holes where options would have been. Not sure if there is a seat ventilation variant or not.
I love the W210 - it is different than the W124 of course (which is the actual car that got me into the brand) but not in a bad way.

Start saving to replace the whole unit, I had the same problem with my W210 E55 AMG, the high beams bulbs were burning constantly and I kept replacing them until one day the driver side couldn’t be repair anymore so my technician who has been working on my car for many years at my local MB dealership told me the bad news. He said Sir you need a new set of headlights unit, apparently the W210 internal headlights wires are to delicate to support the power of the xenon headlights and the regular halogens so pretty much they were fried. I ordered a new set of factory Xenon headlights from Germany. It took 3 weeks to get home to Texas and he place them and they are so bright and nice. Unfortunately I saw the color contrast between the new set of headlights and the old ones I replaced the passenger side to match the new one. I paid for both headlight units $2000.00 and labor about $400.00.
Note replace with the factory original only or you can fried the fuses.

I think you did an accurate assessment of the 210. I have a 2002 E320. It has a mere 138,000 miles on it, and zero rust or corrosion. There is definitely a TON of complicated electronic and mechanical intricacies that need constant attention if--as you said--you want everything to work. The vacuum lock system sucks (or should I say stops sucking!) after 100K requiring all sorts of troubleshooting to pinpoint the exact repair--a fairly common occurrence. It's also know for having bad rear window regulators. I quit replacing them and just don't use them. Worst problem I encountered was just stupid engineering. The computer cooling fan was on the same circuit as a starter module. When my fan shorted out, it immediately kept blowing the (hidden/undisclosed) fuse in the start module. I replaced the fan and put it on it's own fuse to isolate the module. Overall, a relatively comfortable car, timeless styling, with a good power plant. A bonus is great gas mileage for such a snotty little engine. And a PIA.

I have done the majority of the work myself and the parts are affordable. Paid $2900, spent a few thousand on parts and service to do preventative maintenance. Needs springs and shocks, but other than that purrs like a kitten. Black on black, it always gets compliments and questions about the vintage.

This car I sold and the new owner sold it to a collector in the UK.This car was red and in excellent condition. I also bought a friend of mine s car a w210 E320 1996 who bought the car new but passed on. According to me one of the best and finest car I ever owned and will never sell it in my lifetime. I also bought a 2nd hand W211 E270 CDI 2004 which was a night mare and just gave me transmission problems but still maintain the garage that worked on the car ripped me. I sold the E270 and found a 1998 W210 E280 one owner car with 82000km on the clock with full service history. The two w210 are both identical silver with Grey lather interior. Neither of the cars give me any problems and unless they are stolen or I have an accident I indend keeping them till I pass on. Thank you for your info. Regards Pieter Posthumus.

I think it is and will be a classic, many people my age (44) have grown up around these cars in Europe. It was "the" Mercedes for many people because of the many taxi companies running them for many many years. That's why I bought one, it reminds me of days gone and that is exactly why people buy old cars when they could easily afford a new car. I don't care much for the 40 year old models because they weren't around much in my lifetime. Nostalgia is the word. Also, reliability doesn't make a car a classic. The Lancia Delta HF Turbo Integrale is maybe the worst car ever, but it damn sure is a classic! Easy maintenance doesnt either, ever serviced a Ferrari or Maserati? A classic is a car that people hold dear, be it a VW Golf 1 or a Ferrari 512BB. Even a Lada Niva is a classic!

As someone who owns one of the cars that followed (an ‘05 C240) I agree, they aren’t classics and they simply aren’t up to the same standard as a real classic Benz. That being said, I bought mine used in ‘11 and have had very little work done over the 9 years I’ve owned it - certainly less than an average car. Aside from a seat heater element burnt out on the driver’s seat, everything still works... I paid the same for it as a new Corolla and it’s at least twice the car. It’s all relative! Great video, Pierre!

I own a 1998 W210 E320 with 112,000 miles. It's a phenomenal car to drive on the highway. In addition to this car (and for comparison), I have a W116, a W123, a W211, a W140, and owned two W124's in the past. Of those cars, the W210 is the one I have enjoyed driving the most-and ironically, it's the plain Jane of the bunch! It may never reach the classic collector status of a W123 or W126, but it sure does everything it does quite well and drives and feels like a true classic!
My dad bought a 1999 W210 about 7 years ago and he says it’s the best car he’s ever owned. After I drove his car, I was so impressed I immediately started looking for one for myself. You can find very nice, well cared for w210’s that are rust free for less than $5,000. So far, in nearly five years of ownership, it’s only required a new battery and regular service about once per year. Hard to beat it!

We're just looking into putting an E420T together. We found one with a spectacular purple designo interior and exterior. Obviously rust is the biggest issue, due to bacteria in the immersion bath for the chassis primer - something that also concerns the last update of the W124. If your car was dipped in a fresh bath, you're lucky. If not, the car started rusting at random places after 2-3 years. The other issue is that the chassis was extensively spot-welded, a lot more compared to a W201 for example. Also, the sheet metal seems a lot thinner compared to previous Mercedes-generations. And then, antirust protection was pretty poor. As far as them becoming classics, the AMGs are definitely on their way and due to the rust issues, in about 10 years, a rust-free W210 in great condition will be turning heads if you ask me.

Classic & modern classic of course being 2 different things. Compared to current iPhones on wheels, a w210 is a dinosaur & can be "sorted" (not to 100%) & ran somewhat reliably for very cheap (as mentioned here) especially if you do your own work & know what to look for. W210 e55 as far as amg's go is unarguably an end of an era car. Last amg of its kind period. The later v6 that replaced the m112 was the m272 w/ its famous balance shaft issues which was rectified halfway thru its cycle. Very well known cutoff in engine numbers between the "good & bad" ones. I have a "good" m272 in a c207 chassis. The 3.5L. I've done general maintenance on it & sorted it's common issues for pretty cheap. I'd love a real classic Mercedes, but sorting 1 is equivalent to sorting multiple w210's or c207/w212's etc. The difference of course is that once you sort a w123, 124, etc, you're done & don't have to become an electrician as well as a mechanic.

The w210 has rack and pinion steering and still feels like a modern car to drive. And it has the same interior space as the larger w126. But, I must agree that it is simply not a classic Mercedes because it is inferior to the earlier cars in every other respect.

Where you are in the world probably drastically alters your opinion on this matter. In Scotland most W210s rusted away years ago which is a shame as there are many things to like about them.
All of the W210s good points combined with a climate where rust wouldn't be an issue and I think you'd have a great car!
Go back to about 2006 and I had a 1996 W202 C280 Sport and it was still a tidy car with about 100 miles on it. My boss also had a W202 but a later facelift model, a C180 on a 2000 W reg. These later W202s were junk and never held up well and my bosses car at 6 years old had rusted out around the side repeaters so badly one of them fell out as he went over the speedbump at the car park at work. Six West of Scotland winters killed that car and many W210s went the same way

That said the feel in driving one of these cars and the balance of weight, power, handling, vision, comfort is unbeatable. As my mechanic says the Last Great Mercedes.

Oh the W210. I have one. I think it will be a classic someday (2050?) lol. I must say that the M112/722.6 powerplant combos is one of the best MB ever made. This car drives nicer than previous models. 28 mpg, reasonably quick, easy to work on, cheap engine parts - what's not to like? Although the "rear engine seal", breather covers, oil pan upper and lower are all at the mercy of RTV.
Now for the chassis. Good Lord. Bad paint, broken side mirrors, broken sunroof cables, broken window regulators, broken taillights (got to replace the whole unit), worst radio antenna of all time, drooping headliner, cracked dash, scummy steering wheel, and the coup de grace - no carpet pads. There. I think I'm done. Pierre is right.

Pierre, I greatly value your opinions, it may not be a classic (only time can judge that, so we must wait to answer that), but from my perspective (own and maintain two W210 4matic wagons). I would also make a distinction between the pre-facelift (up to model year 1999) and the 2000-2002 model year w210, which included many additions of gadgets like the buttons in the steering wheel, the lights in the sideview mirrors, and reduced serviceability, to name a few. Bottom line for me is late 90s W210 has much of the legendary mercedes engineering and practical value and functionality, and yet they can be had for under $5k for a good daily driver. It may not be a classic like the '78-'85 era, but they are a great value on the used market, especially if you do your own maintenance. And I agree that the more chipped the cars get, the less desirable over time as they lose their maintainability. The w210 has this issue, as it is a matter of time before the critical electric components are obsoleted (anyone know someone who can overhaul my instrument cluster?), and hence, the whole car becomes undriveable. That doesn't mean you can't retrofit with a carburetor, but that's a whole different level of modding which most owners would not take on.

I'm sure Pierre is right about the cons; repairability etc. But my 2 cents - I had a 2006 E320 CDI that worked perfectly. 40 mpg+ highway on several cross country trips. The Navigation was terrible at the time and there was no way to install Satellite radio (without butchering the Command console). So I traded it in for a 2011 E350 Bluetec. Big mistake. Kept the 2011 for only a few months. Wish I had kept the 2006. Might not be a classic, but it might have been the last of the good diesels, at least for 100K miles or so. If I could find a "sorted out" W123 I'd buy one; I'm too old to wrench them myself, and it's hard to find one that doesn't need a lot of work. Wish I lived in Florida.

I'll be interested to see you follow this up in 8-10 years or so with a similar analysis of W211s and 212s. It's all been anecdotal evidence for me but I'm under the impression that 210s and early 211s were kind of the nadir for the E-Class and that late 211s and 212s saw an uptick in terms of build quality. For the diesels, going from OM648 to OM642 hasn't been an improvement in terms of longevity and the OM642 and OM651 strike me as being the last gasp for the Mercedes diesel passenger car in North America. Again, anecdotal and will be glad to be proven otherwise.
As for the W213, it's beginning to blur the line between automobile and autonomous "mobility device" to a point that makes my Luddite self shy away from it.

I've been considering purchasing a 1999 - 2002 W210 for a while but the reliance on SDS software has been the biggest deterrence. Is there an aftermarket scan tool or knock off software that can be used as an adequate replacement?

there are clones, of the sds dianosis tool that i think cost about 600dollars, clones are more cheap i dont know about those but if you do youre research i think you can find something good for less than 600dollars, Im not very sure, just do a little bit of research, but you need sds diagnosis or compatible thats for sure, good thing is that is one of the latest models you can program for youreself after the w210 Mercedes make you go to the dealer for a key to program everithing.

So in 10 years with it be considered a "classic"? I think so. In any event my 2001 E320 is the nicest driving car I've ever owned, and I've owned an awful lot of cars over the last 45 years. And it's been pretty reliable and not too hard to work on. Decent examples can be found for cheap. Bad paint and some oppressive electronics, but all in all a damn good car. In one of Pierre's older videos he called the W210's some of the worst cars ever made! Yes, he actually said that.

I currently have a 2009 Mercedes sl550 . It’s presently my only car. But I don’t want to daily drive it , I want it more as a fun gt car, and so I want something more practical, older, and closer to a beater. Although I’m not saying w210s are necessarily beaters, far from it. I was thinking of buying a cheap, under 5k, Mercedes e320 w210. I don’t want the e420 or e430 because I want v6 gas mileage and that sturdy v6 engine for the w210. I already have a powerful v8 in my sl550 which is my performance car, so I don’t need another big powerful motor, I want more room and comfort to sometimes take elderly parents around places or anyone else like a dog, commute to a job when I have a job later at some point in time, safety, and I’m not necessarily looking for performance.

I almost broke out the computer to respond. We have a w126 and a w210. While I don't think the w210 will ever qualify as classic, it is a very solid performer and no slouch at all. I personally prefer the v6 non 4 matic for balance and weight. It's just more fleet afoot. The extra hp from the v8 doesn't make up for balance and the additional weight.
I like them and dislike them for different reasons.
    W210, nimble, quick and basic.
W126, lwb lovely, solid and planted.
W210 can feel flimsy at the edges. Steering wheel Volume controls need to be cleaned with rubbing alcohol and there are some idiosyncrasies with errant valve cover oil leaks and make sure to change the "lifetime" trans fluid. If you aren't on top of "made of rust" issues beware. If you have a solid one like we do, you will be very pleased. I love the w210 and it's the reason I fell into my w126.
My w126 350 SDL is at a whole different level, apples and oranges comparison. It's like driving a bank vault that does 100+ mph and gets 25mpg. People know I've arrived and I don't have to search for my car in a parking lot. I'm not liking my w126 right now as it looks like I've got to pull the dash to do the blower motor. I can't blame the w126 though as it's almost 30 years old. I just wish that MB didn't build the car around the blower motor though.

w210 in general may still be a classic in another 5 to 10 years. it's gaining in popularity. w210 E50 AMG are now being sold in $25k to $30k USD range for nice examples. E55, E420 and E430s are going up in value too.

I have 2 w210s, and i think you either need to draw the line at the w123 for a classic, or draw the line with that disastrous Chrysler merger. Or you could just go with age like any other car. A Pinto is now a classic. An Edsel is an incredible antique.

I have an e290 turbo diesel and i love the car, bomb proof engine, 6,5lts of diesel per 100kms, the only thing that could be better is the engine noise, some times sounds like a tractor, its a noisy engine. Super confort, super reliable, driving it is always an ocasion, a very special car ...
