I've been playing pickleball for around 5 months. From the moment I began playing this game, I was getting spin on the ball because of my ping pong background. I do get good velocity with my topspin, but after seeing demonstrations of your topspin in other videos, there is plenty for me to learn. It's amazing you can hit it with such velocity and topspin even when the ball is low to the ground. I'll try to emulate the way you do it next time I play. Your instructions are always helpful.
Keep using your table tennis (and tennis background fundementals-me) The Pickleballers footwork, ground stroke mechanics (hitting low to high) is atrocious, even at the pro level. And every one rushes the net EVERY opportunity like they are John Mcenroe. Hit deep penetrating topspin groundstrokes neutralizing their net rushes and come in on YOUR FAVORABLE aproach shots. Play like Stan Wawrinka..LOL!!
@@bobmalack481 I can't help but use spin on the ball, and I agree about the benefits of deep topspin groundstrokes, but I also get great results from deep underspin groundstrokes. Recently, I started to stand back further on my serve hitting the ball harder with underspin. It's turning out to be pretty effective.
I have started playing too and also played tennis in highschool... despite the obvious similarities to tennis, i think i will benefit from my table tennis background more than my tennis background.

Another great video Jordan. The trick is to switch the grip to semi-western from western. Also good to mention the lo-hi stroke comes from shoulder not the wrist.
I've been finding while doing this, many shots are hitting the top tape of the net, thus trying to see what I'm doing wrong. One of the main approaches I'm finding, is those of us that play indoors...with an indoor ball, can get our bearings of which strokes work for us, but when going outside, with a harder ball, those same approaches to the ball change! I've been playing for about 3 years now, and can get a good hard shot in, indoors, but often the same shot experience, has the ball going past the baseline. I thought perhaps getting a better grasp of the topspin might be helpful, so I'll give it a try in about an hour, as I am scheduled to play here soon. Thanks for the different ways of showing us holding the paddle in a different manner, which may help in the end.
😁 There are some minor adjustments to be made from indoor to outdoor and vice versa. If you're hitting the top of the tape then you're paddle face probably needs to be slightly more open as you brush up the ball.
Great videos - appreciate the education . I have been playing for about 6 months and have tennis/pickle ball elbow. What am I doing wrong to cause some much elbow pain?
Hate sounding like an ad, but I had a similar issue when I started playing frequently & getting prokennex kinetic paddle helped. Try it out (order from a company that has 30 day return policy if u dont like the paddle) to see if it helps. Hate elbow pain.

I like all your videos. They are helpful. They would more helpful, if you show them slow motion, and showing you body as well when the ball hit the Paddle. Lots of us are biggers and don’t not know how to apply your great suggestions in court, versus some people played tennis before. Would you please make a video, show slow motion, forehand, backhand and showing how to transfer power using your body from foot to upper body and finally to your hand.
Thanks for the suggestions. Lots more videos coming and slow motions will often be included. There are already quite a lot of our videos with slo motion. Check out any recent ones on forehand and backhand and they're there.
One of your best videos yet Jordan. I’m trying to develop a good topspin but have a bad habit of flipping my wrist at the end then end up hitting the ball into the net. Question - I can’t tell from the video but are you hitting the ball in the sweet spot or further toward the end of the paddle (away from the grip)?
Great video, Jordan! I am trying to figure out how to (intentionally) add spin to my game and I'm not used to changing my grip position. Do you have any suggestions on how to shift the paddle to a different grip position during play when you have to think/move quickly? It looks like you didn't actually move it too much in the video so I'm guessing can be done quickly but any tips would be great, thanks!!
The grip change is so slight, you won’t see it. In my ready position I may have my left hand on my paddle, and I will use my left hand to “turn” and adjust my grip.
Jordan the problem I have is that I am at the kitchen line waiting to block the drive from the baseline with top spin and as the ball reaches me the ball dips and I missed the shot goes between my legs dipping low. Is there a way I can correct that?
Jorden do you still use that finishing position when your opponents are at the no volley zone. It looks like your paddle would be out of position, if you got a fast ball back. I have been trying to keep a more compact stroke, so that I end closer to the ready posotion.
When they’re up at the NVZ, I do tend to keep my strokes a bit shorter so that I can get into ready position quicker. If they are in the transition zone or at the baseline, I can swing out on my strokes and anticipate a weaker ball.
@@primetimepickleball I though so. Just clearing it up so newer player get to their ready sooner. You probably use a stance that is parallel to the net also, when up at the kitchen too.
@@primetimepickleball To be fair the shot you showed is great for taking third shot drops off the bounce and adding pressure to those advancing. Sometimes their is so much emphasis on the third shot advancing shot that keeping your opponents back shots get over looked. I use a topspin lob occasionally. I think I don’t change my grip but to be honest I’m not so sure maybe I do unconsciously. Question....I use a continental grip so if I want to hit a topspin ground stroke I should go to the eastern grip on the fly? I came from tennis and started out with the eastern. My topspin then was really more pronounced. I changed months ago to the continental. It’s much better especially for my backhand shots. Thanks
Yes continental is great for most backhand shots. I change grips often when I have the time to hit a particular shot. For example if the opponents are at the baseline hitting a third shot drop, I can quickly switch to eastern to try to be really offensive with that 4th shot. It takes practice and anticipation of your opponent’s next shot.
Not sure what you mean about releasing my wrist, but as you see the swing path and follow through goes up and around to position B. Around the time of contact is where I start to bring my paddle around which may seem like I’m releasing my wrist.
What makes the ball go down is not friction, but a change of air pressure on the top and bottom of the ball. Forward rotation LOWERS air pressure ON THE BOTTOM OFTHE BALL, and INCREASES pressure on the top of the ball. This pushes the ball downwards at the appropriate forward ball-through-the-air speed.
the concepts you describe are good, BUT, most of your videos of the the 'shots' are too far away and partially obscured by the tripod and camera that are in between. And how about a camera angle straight on from the other side of the net? thanks
Hi Jordan people talk a lot about 'the third drop shot' but what is wrong about a 'second drop shot?' The server is way back and his partner is too,so they have little chance to get to the NVZ. How come this is never mentioned?
One of the most effective strategies in pickleball is to keep your opponents back while you get to the net. That puts your team on offense and their team on defense. There is no reason to give them a free trip to the net into an offensive position. That’s like a gift to them which is why nobody recommends it. The 3rd shot drop is done out of necessity because they have already got themselves up to the net. It’s your best chance (a lot of the time) to also get up there.
@@primetimepickleball Thanks Jordan, but doing a SECOND shot drop as a return of serve (if legal) will find the serving team still at the baseline (normally) and at a disadvantag. So what's not to like? Paul P
