  • #shorelunch #lakesuperiorfishing #JimBaird Baird Brothers Alone in the Wilderness - Trekking for Trout & Bushcraft - Style Shore Lunch: Our retreat after my injury was tough but successful and I made it into the medical canter in Wawa, Ontario the same day after the exhausting evacuation. The next morning, fishing was on our minds as we started the road trip home in the Toyota Tacoma and decided to take advantage of the beautiful Lake Superior north shore country with a side trip to catch Brook Trout. We were excited when we also caught Rainbow Trout too! and we saw a couple big Steelhead moving up the river as well. We didn't land anything big but caught multiple small ones and Ted caught the biggest, a nice keeper-size Rainbow. We also explored aways upriver and were truly inspired by the beauty of the country. I cooked op the larger Trout with a traditional method used to BBQ Salmon over the fire in the Pacific Northwest. Ted cooked up the smaller Trout on a flat rock which he placed right on top of the coals of the fire. The fish was delicious! and we didn't have any seasoning for it, but the fire smoke added a delicious flavour. As we ate, a Bald Eagle flew overhead and perched on top of a tree as the evening sun cast a perfect glow over the river. Trekking back to our vehicle we followed the river and then walked along the coast of Lake Superior while enjoying a near-perfect sunset. We were disappointed that our adventure on the East Pukaskwa River came to an abrupt end but we were happy that we got out of the bush safely and that we'd managed to make the best of a bad situation with this awesome little side adventure. On the way home, we stopped to meet up with Joe Robinet to camp out and build a tipi smoker with logs and bark in order to smoke a whole salmon and some steaks. The following weekend we met up with Shawn James to complete our build of a traditional-style longhouse. I've already run these two vids however which provided a little foreshadowing as to what happened to my hand. - Get caught up on this series through the playlist here: • Two Brothers Alone in ... Here's the Joe Robinet vid that comes right after this chronologically: • Tipi Smokehouse Build ... I give on update on how my hand is currently doing at 10:23 of this video: • Terraced Vegetable Gar... the next video in this series, Ted and I head back into the bush north of Lake Superior to retrieve our canoes and the rest of our outfit which we cached there. It was only six weeks after my injury and my hand was still sore. We were concerned about the safety of our gear and were also worried a bear may have gotten into our food. On the way home from the recovery mission, we did another side trip, paddling and portaging into the Temagami backcountry to slam numerous chunky Bass and Lake Trout with a friend of ours who lives in a remote cabin in the area. Stay tuned for these episodes which will go live in the coming weeks! - Naturally, I'd love to have you as a sub! The Baird brothers are simply awesome. No matter how tough the going, they were cheerful and almost indifferent to the difficulties. I couldn't believe how calm Jim remained after a very serious injury that at the least could cost him hand mobility and at the worst he could have bled to death. This brings back memories you can't imagine, of a creek I used to fish in my 20's and 30's. Some of the most pristine Eastern Pennsylvania country you've ever seen.
      I asked a farmer permision to fish it 23 yrs. ago and it was one of the best decisions of my life. I was even able to get my son into fish on it before the last of my family left the state. It was the last trip we made down there and the last time I stayed at my childhood family home.....before it was sold.
      Nightcrawlers every single cast, it was either a Brookie, Brownie, Rainbow, or a Slammer Creek Chub. It even held Rock Bass.
      You could Wade the creek for MILES!! High banked red clay cliffs and the most beautiful river shaped Limestone rocks.

    Was great to see you two back in the saddle again after the injury and I enjoy your adventures. I know others have commented n this and i don't normally add any negative ones but I too thought that first very small rainbow was too small to harvest and would have migrated back to Lake Superior at some point and returned back to the river to spawn once mature. Keep up the adventuring.

    • @JimBairdAdventurer
      @JimBairdAdventurer  4 роки тому

      Thanks for watching! I remember saying in the vid that we kept one that was embarrassing. But anyways, those little fish are resident rainbow trout as opposed to the steel head which are the much larger anadromous rainbows that run up river to spawn. Not every fish grows to a finite size relating to its age. Some fish have bigger genes than others. So, if you keep bigger fish all the time, you can stunt the genetics of a given population and larger fish are larger breeders than a tiny one. So, I think that over all for the health and population of rainbow trout in that river, it would be better to keep a tiny one than a big one. We don’t usually keep ones that small, however but we wanted a shore lunch and the little ones are tasty. You also waste absolutely no meat because you can cook them whole and pull the bones out.

      @@JimBairdAdventurer I really appreciate how you respond to comments and have been a follower for many years. Although my work as a fish biologist in Ontario is a little dated-i do believe that rainbow smolt of that small size may still be those that return to Superior but some do stay resident in the rivers for longer periods. Without knowing the population dynamics of a given watebody you can't really assume that harvesting younger age classes that have a lower reproductive potential is the right strategy for that river. But enough said on a small point in what was a nice video. Keep on Adventuring.

    Sometimes things don't go smoothly, that's why. Take care of yourself. An accident like this can have really bad consequences. Some only when you get older. I speak from personal experience.
    Best wishes from Frankfurt and stay healthy.

    Hey buds, trust I know how it is to loose a good lure. I’m from the southeast of Michigan. Can’t wait to get back north to fish that brackish water. Keep up the great work.

      Big thanks! This water is all fresh too as this is Lake Superior so, no brackish water but of course many of the rivers get runs off salmon and steelhead and anadramous brook trout, it’s so huge it seems like the ocean too.

    Prayers your hand heals completely. Mine never did. Haven't felt my pinkie in over a year. Ruins my sense of grip, especially handling my knife or another tool. But I'm sure you will be fine. What are you talking aboot? Beautiful bird songs. Black birds and Grosbeaks? Love waking up to the haunting blackbird songs, don't love crows and ravens screeching just to see if you are alive.

    when I was younger we used to do the fall action at places like Michipicoten, Montreal River, Old Woman Bay for Rainbows. You had to time your way in before the salmon run would spoil it.

    I was always taught never to peel birch bark from a live tree, but that it's ok to cut off bark that has already peeled. Was I told wrong?
    Glad to see that your hand has healed well, now that I see what caused it.

    • @JimBairdAdventurer
      @JimBairdAdventurer  2 роки тому

      Ya, pretty much….as long as the cambial layer isn’t destroyed in the majority of a tree’s circumstance, it won’t kill the tree. It actually grows back thicker. For example, moose calls are traditionally made of birch bark taken from from a 360 section of the trunk. You can see where the bark has grown back in these places on older trees.

    • @JimBairdAdventurer
      @JimBairdAdventurer  2 роки тому

      Hah, well as long as you get out. Ya, I dint think it’s a particularly good thing to promote as if there’s a Burch tree at a campsite that everyone is using it can get abused and all loose bark will be gone, repetitively peeling down past the cambium could kill it. The loose hanging bark is okay to take without cutting if some peels off.
