I also love the control in this song. It's the perfect song.❤I try to tell people to react to this song, but they aren't listening...oh well, their loss.

    I have this album , but I normally listen to the version from the album , Welcome Back My Friends To The Show That Never Ends ! I first heard the song Karn Evil 9 , the short radio version , over 40 years ago , but nobody could tell me who it was . It was just about 10 or 12 years ago I found out it was E . L . P . , Now I have about 10 of their albums ! Fantastic band , too bad I didn't know 40 years ago ! But now I do !!

    A truly beautiful song, showcasing the talents of each of them. Keith did indeed write "bigger things", such as his Piano Concerto on Works Vol.1, now played by orchestras around the world, as well as a number of film soundtracks, Inferno being the best imo. If you are going to react to Pirates, may I suggest you go for the live version with orchestra from Montreal Olympic Stadium, which for me has Greg's finest vocal performance - the entire piece is epic. And I second the recommendation below to check the live version of Aquatarkus on the Welcome Back...live triple album - they were absolutely at their best live, as I was lucky enough to find out in '72, '74, '92 and 2010.

    This was their first album together. So, yeah, tight and focused~~~
    When new sounds are constantly emerging, you want your first shot to count.
    "Days of Future Passed" came out in '67, and "In the Court of the Crimson King" in '69,(featuring Greg Lake on bass and vocals), so the genre of "art rock" was already a thing.

      @jamespuleo3269 6 місяців тому +1

    • @chefren77
      @chefren77 6 місяців тому +1

      @@jamespuleo3269 Typically it has to do with the time required to get a record deal, and the fact that studio time tended to be limited for debut albums so they basically recorded their best (= very well rehearsed) live sets in many cases. This also explains why second albums are often a bit meh compared to the debuts.
      I don't know if ELP really was affected here, as a so-called supergroup they did not have to wait long to get their first album out.

    Great reaction & well said Lee. This one we ELP devotees hold close to our heart, so unique, pure ELP magnificence. Keith wrote a full piano concerto, it's on side 1 of Works vol 1 entitled Piano concerto nbr 1 with I think the London Philharmonic orchestra. It's excellent, the final movement really rocks. They performed it on the Works world tour with orchestra. Also check out the band version Keith arranged for his own Band, The Keith Emerson Band which included guitarist & singer Mark Bonilla, there's a live You tube clip from the Live in Moscow DVD, it's brilliant!! Reaching inside the piano and either strumming or picking the strings. Take A Pebble - It looks like your are gong to be doing the studio version. Long absolute beautiful piano improv. I say improv because he always changes it up in live versions & they are doing something else in the middle. From the 1st album and there is yet another fantastic piano .. (The Three Fates) .. that sounds classical and absolutely beautiful & it also starts with pipe organ.

    I've mentioned before about Keith's left hand being his secret weapon. "Take a Pebble" is a perfect example of how he can set up these ostinotos in the left hand and then solo almost endlessly over it. Piano, Hammond, Moog, clavinet -- whatever is at hand. I'm not sure what was his inspiration for this kind of thing. I know he was a big Oscar Peterson fan, and stride piano also features a lot of rolling left hand parts. BTW, if you enjoy this, Keith's previous band The Nice started doing this kind of thing the last year or so they were together. Check out "Hang On To A Dream" from the album 'Nice'. Also, it's better for you to review ELP's earlier stuff before moving up to things like "Pirates". I'd recommend you just take it all chronologically.

    Beautiful blend of Emerson's exquisite piano work with Lake's vocals. Lost in the mix sometimes are Lake's smooth bass work and Palmer's subtle drumming and percussion. Sometimes, subtlety requires more skill and artistry and I think this song shows that.

    "Carl's using different sticks" you said in the beginning section. Quite right. He was using brushes.. That's a very jazz and big band sound.
    What do you even call this music... You call it Fiji music.... See what I did there.....!! Keith wrote orchestral music too.. On the double album that Pirates is on, Works Volume 1, he also has a Piano Concerto...! I understand your love of Keith... BUT.... Without Carl and Greg he wouldn't be as powerful... Honestly. The three of them created the whole music pallete. Just like the Beatles, you need all of them.. Keep on Rocking.

    The british music scene was very insular and relatively small in that a new thing was spread around and influenced or toss aside by those participating. Like the soil, things became part of the firmament and other styles sprung from it. This piece built upon the music styles of Dave Brubeck and Traffic.
    Lucky Man is part of that early legacy. It may sound passe today, but it was a new sound that broke into the charts.

    Keith has been voted #1 by Rolling Stone magazine for many , many years ! Did you know that he used to be on cables to lift him and his piano up in the air , on stage , and slowly spin around ? Yes , he would turn upside down while he is playing the piano , then turn back upright ! The drummer , Lake , he was on an elevator lift , go about 15 feet up then come back down while he was doing his drum solo . Well one time the lift didn't come all the way down , he was still 10 feet in the air , finished his drum solo , and jumped over the drums to take a bow , then fell the 10 feet and broke his arm ! Ooch ! That sucks for a drummer ! They quit doing that after the accident !!

    Sometime you have to listen to something almost completely different and awesome which would be Keith's Piano Concerto.

    This song, more than any other, shows what The Nice (Emerson's previous band) could have been with a great singer and perfect production - both of those things being Greg Lake's contributions. The Nice was a good experiment, but their production was ALWAYS garbage and Lee Jackson sounded like Ian Anderson with laryngitis. Lake definitely elevated things for Emerson.

    I don't think it's different for them. It is exactly their style of music. The program of Prog Rock is "Don't accept the borders of a genre". So talking about Prog Rock as a genre is somewhat like a paradoxon.
    Since you are impressed by Emerson's technique and the speed he runs down the whole keyboard you might be interested in watching another great pianist.

    Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Piano Concerto No. 1, 3rd Movement - Live In Montreal, 1977
    Both he and Greg wrote music for movies and video games. Harry Potter was Greg. Iron Man video was Keith and you would lhave to ook up the others.

    The bass players of this Era listened to Paul McCartney! He did write some really great stuff. All three were true masters of their craft. I'm a big fan of sci-fi and actually listened to ELP and Yes reading Dune lol. Back in the day we called this stuff fusion, but perhaps we have compartmentalize our music too much by labels. The secret is to at times step away from the machine and stare off into stars. Figi is too damm hot. lmao

Look for a yes song that has machine in the title. MB On the threshold of a dream there's a interesting little bit about magnetic ink. Oh and of course welcome to the machine by pf lots of computer stuff out there during this Era. Funny there is a very old tune called Telstar circa 60~64 that is associated with the space age. There are quite a few songs that are of the more beautiful type, the difference is the writer, Lake wrote more like this song, others of his include Cest le Vie, the sage, I believe in father Christmas etc. Often Lake would release them solo and the band would pick them up later, sometimes not for the better as Emerson would tend to over orchestrate them, changing the mood of the song. Still good but some of Lakes solo versions were better for those songs. From what I understand it was always pretty tense working in that band, with a big ego like Emerson it's pretty much enevitable. Hecpretty much valued his art more than his life, literally, which is pretty sad. He committed suicide when he started having problems with his hands and couldn't play like he used to, I mean I love his playing but the mindset that his life was worthless without his extraordinary ability, well I think he would have been better off without the talent he had as it warped his self image causing his own self destruction. Pretty sad indeed as his love of music turned into mental illness. Peace of mind is something nobody should lose
