Drummer reacts to "Karn Evil 9" (Impression 2 + 3) by Emerson, Lake & Palmer

- The sheer scope of this trilogy is quite astounding. The whole narrative is so engrossing in so many different ways. The way the music and the story play off each other and tell each others part is so entertaining.
Come for the music, stay for the revolution

Credit where credit’s due…there are singer/songwriters, there are creators, there are lyricists, there are collaborators….and then there are composers, they are in a class all by themselves…ELP fall into the latter category. So glad to have been a teen in the ‘70’s….you have no idea how great it was…cheers to all😎
They really are in a league of their own. Just astounding composition and execution
I was there and didn't realize how good it was and how spoiled we were.😊❤
The other amazing thing is they could perform all this LIVE. Emerson was amazing and at times like Hendrix on guitar.
Lee, you HAVE TO listen to the full version from their Live Album “Welcome Back My Friends To The Show That Never Ends ~ Ladies And Gentlemen Emerson Lake and Palmer”, it will blow your mind. Carl Palmer’s drum solo has to be heard to be believed. Each arm, and leg are playing different things (of course!) and to top it off, he tugs on an overhead bell with his teeth!
Keith emerson is beyond a rockstar. Amazing musician. Innovative composer. Insane performer who knifed and tossed his hammonds into submission. Do a UA-cam scan for Rondo and any result will blow your mind.
I believe that Keith Emerson was the BEST keyboardist, I sure wished he was still alive.
50 odd I've years I've lived with this but it's so good to be able to share it with yet another generation ... :-)
"Ties a rope to a tree and hangs the universe"
Well what do you expect you've only got God on the keyboards, God on the drums, and an angel for a singer as well as one of the top five bass players. Who even plays occasional guitar. What a supergroup there will never be anyone like them they were definitely the set the standard for excellence in musicianship that all other groups in the day were measured by😮😮😊
Carl is one the greatest drummers. Ever
You would love Pirates. A musical soundscape: Copland and John Williams all rolled into one.
Magnificent.
AT the very end, it is the mechanized machines malfunctioning and in concert they blew up.
I think you’ll absolutely love reacting to ELPs “Pictures at an Exhibition” next.
sweet thanks! I will add it to the list.. these guys don't seem to miss. and if they do its still a radio hit. LOL
@@L33Reacts what is great is there is no studio version of that piece, it was something from their first tour before the release of their 1st album. They released a live recording of it as their 3rd album, it takes up the entire album except one short extra track added. Also there is a video of them preforming it in 1970 that was released.
There is no war with the computer. The computer is trying to stop Man from entering a space war with a "stranger". Man ignores the computer and wins the war. Man arrogantly claims "I am all there is!" The computer disagrees, and relieves Man of his command.
The second impression tends to dazzle pepple with Emerson's piano work and the drumming and percussion are perfectly on point. But after two or three listens, you begin to realize how absolutely perfice the bass line is througout the piece. Greg Lake really shows his skill on bass from beginning to end on this movement.
I was an 8 year old kid when my older brother brought this home the day of release. I had to be a drummer because of Carl. I was already sold on them as the best ever after hearing a year earlier Pictures At An Exhibition the live album. Listing to this all I could do was air drum until I could get my own drums. Seeing them live years later in the 90s on the Black Moon Tour. Keith and Carl just melted our faces The whole night. They truly are untouchable.
What?!?!!??!! No waaaay!!!!
I am on this mother!!!!!!
Starting the vid now.
Just finished. Appreciated review.
Since you are a progger, I can tell you this album is the most listened to prog album for me. There is so much to get out of it that yes it can be overwhelming but repeated listenings get way more out of it. I still listen to this to this day.
You got it right though. Corporate money kills.
Successful bands in the early to mid seventies had influence to put out what they wanted. Imagine the 1974 California jam where they were the premier act at the end of the day and played this infront of a tremendous amount of people. ELP were gigantic in these years. The reason you don’t hear about them is that the corporate money wagon has decided they cannot sell it to todays audiences. It was ELP at their height. The best show. If you see the interviews with the band after this albums concert, you will see Keith just whipped, and Carl in complete exhaustion. I swear I saw Carl actually appear to get sick in one interview after this show he was so exhausted. Amazing stuff.
They gave everything on stage from this album.
Mesmerizing just watching them perform.
There’s vids of them performing at this time in their careers. Incredible. Even vids on them in the studio getting this album down. So cool. Beyond cool. Thanks for reviewing. Keep going!!!
glad you enjoyed my friend! I had a blast with this movement. its a very well crafted story with extraordinary instrumentals. how can you not enjoy this?? its awesome. its sad that these were the heroes of music back in your time... the "heroes" nowadays are just villains and corporate sellouts and pick me's! but hey at least we can enjoy this still.
2nd Impression is probably my all-time favorite ELP song. The band at the height of their artistry. Although Trilogy is my favorite ELP album, this and "Tarkus" are my favorite ELP compositions (along with "The Endless Enigma, part 1/Fugue/The Endless Enigma, part 2" from Trilogy). I'm so glad you listened to this.
Man tarkus and this is TOUGH to pick between... I honestly don't have an answer. It's hard LOL
I'm glad you enjoyed. Thank you for watching my friend:)
Excellent reaction Lee. Glad you took the time to dig in, share all your thoughts, and elaborate because as I’ve said before you are an intelligent young person with the tools and vocabulary to express yourself. You can’t know what it means to hear you say that the music/prog of this era is so much better than your own era. If I said it, it just would not carry the same weight. Carry on!
Hey Glenn! Thank you for the kind words my friend I really appreciate it. I try my best to express myself in a way people understand, not just myself. I think people preach to themselves more then others most of the time, and that's why communication fails so much nowadays
Greg Lake's gracious human nature made it inevitable that when he produced this record, he buried his considerable gifts as an electric, acoustic and bass guitarist in the mix to highlight his compadres. Class act. ps - if you can't hear George Gershwin in this, you have a big education in front of you.
a sonic masterpiece ..... 3 guys become 1 and this dystopian fusion of jazz and blues rock layered with symphonic synthesizer and piano brilliance ...it never gets old for one minute after 45 years
There is no battle with the computer. The computer warns Man's spaceship of a "stranger" and warns against conflict. Man says "No computer stands in my way!" and plunges into battle. Man is victorious, the stranger is defeated. Man's arrogance swells, proclaiming "I am all there is!" The computer disagrees, and shuts Man off. There is no battle, Man is no longer in control.
Though I love Emeraon and Wakeman their playing styles are so different. They were friends for many years.
yeah rick is a tad more atmospheric driven and keith emerson is very technical and fast. both can do the other's style, but I think what I stated is them at their personal best. or i am just talking out of my ass, either way
Rick Wakeman has been quoted saying "If you combined my right hand technique and Keith's left hand technique you'd have one pretty good pianist."
I TOTALLY OWE ALL OF MY "AIR" KEYBOARD PLAYING SKILLS TO ELP AND THIS ALBUM!!!!😅❤
My mom was a classically trained pianist. She taught me the right hand, over a course of a few years (I was 10-12). It was fun when I finally got giving up on the left hand by myself too.
Everytime I hear KE8 I can't get rid of the impression, that this was THE top piece of all prog rock and everything that came after, was - more or less - just an aftermath. Not even ELP themselves where able to top such a thing.
This might be one of the best concept song/songs I have ever heard. The narrative and the music go hand in hand and just craft this story with so much nuance and depth it's incredible. Impression 1 and 2 are my favorites (for now).

"Fanfare for the Common Man"... I am sure you will get a request for that but I highly recommend the one from 1992. It includes... " Rondo'"... and is more energetic than Montreal.... Emerson Lake and Palmer - Fanfare For The Common Man (Finale Live Royal Albert Hall 1992) Somebody grabs Emerson's hat when he is on his back
I DON'T KNOW IF YOU HAD A CHANCE TO DO IT YET BUT YOU SHOULD GO BACK AND LISTEN TO THIS WITH LYRICS SO THAT YOU CAN REALLY UNDERSTAND WHAT WAS GOING ON ESPECIALLY IN THE LAST IMPRESSION!! ON YOUR OWN OF COURSE I DON'T MEAN ANOTHER REACTION!😅
In my first two years in college, Dark Side of the Moon, Close to the Edge, Brain Salad Surgery, Aqualung, or was it Thick as a Brick, and a number of the other greatest classic prog rock albums were released...and I got to see them all performed live! I still haven't gotten enough of them!
My oldest brother who was basically out of the house when I was very young ( like 1972) was a huge ELP fan.. he influenced my brothers musical taste which influenced me.. complete musicianship.. and Keith Emerson is a alien 👽
We didn’t know what to do either first time we heard it
Listen to Endless Enigma off of the Trilogy album..look for live videos for your own pleasure. I started going to concerts in the late 60's..when I saw and heard ELP in 1971..they set a new standard of not only playing but set structure and quality of the sound. You could hear a pin drop. Their sets started fast and hard..the slowed down slowly bringinh the pace up..faster and harder until the end when they would do Rondo..a song they never did on a studio album..you left their concerts in shock and awe
i plan on getting to trilogy soon. i wanted to wrap karn evil 9 up and then move on to some live stuff. these guys just put on a hell of a show. musically and visually. even the live video for barbarian was super entertaining. how can you not love all three of these dudes just pushing the boundaries before they even existed?
@@L33Reactsgo ahead do yourself a favor my friend listen to Armageddon from 1975 they are another true supergroup started by Keith relf formerly of The Yardbirds and Renaissance. If you like drummers they have the great Bobby Caldwell who if you saw my list in the comments is one of my top five and will blow you away. Recommended songs silver tightrope for Shear melodic Beauty and the Buzzard for heavy aggressive progressive rock almost totally instrumental throughout. Unfortunately the band only made one album due to the unfortunate untimely death of singer Keith relf but it is considered a classic and trust me your audience will love it I'm sure a lot of them have heard it. The whole album is a masterpiece but if you play the two songs I mentioned you'll blow people's minds. Martin p u g h e s guitar work is off the chain rather it's the more mellow Acoustic sound of silver tightrope or the more aggressive the Buzzard😊
If you haven't heard "Pirates" yet you HAVE to check it out from "Works vol. 1"
Great reaction brother, I really enjoyed reliving my past experiences with all of these genius artists! Keep up the good work! Peace ✌️
Really enjoyed your reaction and appreciation for this classic performance!! I was fortunate to see ELP perform this live on the Brain Salad Surgery tour in 1974. If you want to hear a classical performance by Keith, go to ELP's Works album and listen to Keith Emerson's Piano Concerto, Movements I, II, and III. Recorded with the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
Okay, so you need to check out Rachel flowers she plays as quickly as Keith Emerson and she’s completely blind. She is astonishing.
I'm in same boat with you about nowadays music.
its sad but its true what i said. art is made only to be sold now. it used to be made for a variety of reasons. now its ego and money.
For 1973, there's some cutting edge synth stuff going on here. The steel drum sound in Second Impression is the Moog run through a ring modulator, for instance. That ending bit is an early example of programmed, sequenced synthesizer. Tangerine Dream would make heavy use of the same thing starting around this time. "Reminds me of swing music" -- One of Keith's heroes was Oscar Peterson, who was famous for his stride style piano playing. That's partly where Keith got his ridiculous left hand technique from. You picked up on Carl's snare technique. That's actually the one thing he's sort of famous for amongst drummers. There are some videos from the early 80's where he does some pretty crazy snare tricks. Recommended future ELP: The album Trilogy has some amazing music on it. So amazing they couldn't pull it off on stage. "Trilogy" and the "Endless Enigma" suite are both good places to start.
My greatest trio in rock history, it was unbelievable then as it' is still nowadays. It still gives me the chills! Kudos
I love, LOVE, ELP, but the greatest trio in rock history is Rush. Unchallenged.
@@reliantncc1864 I don't think so, don't get me wrong, Rush is a extraordinary and beloved band, but ELP is out of this world in musicianship and performance.. Unchallenged.
@@rofavilla Musicianship? You're talking about Rush here, the most proficient band in history. Top 100 guitarist, top 20 bassist, and top 1 drummer. They're virtuosos without equal. If you'd picked some other category in which ELP could be said to be better, you might have had a point. You picked Rush's single strongest suit.
For example, there's no question Emerson is better at composition. Lake is certainly a better singer than Geddy Lee. ELP makes more immersive music, I'd say. At their very best, like Pirates, they're stunning. But an equal to Rush they are not.
@@reliantncc1864 nope
@@rofavilla You came back after two months to provide the word "nope" with no support? Are you bored or high?
As an ELP fan since their beginning, you need to listen to Pirates Live in Montreal. You'll love it.
Keith Emerson was an autodidact, a genius some have said a savant but I'm not sure on that last one. I believe Carl Palmer was the only one with any formal training and that was in jazz and classical percussion😮
So great that you are discovering this incredible music and band - I bought this album when it came out and saw the supporting tour, having already seen them in November 1972. Their range, technical ability and sheer adventurousness were unmatched and still hold up today. They were capable of great beauty as well as being right "out there", sometimes within a few minutes, such as on Trilogy. While Keith Emerson and Carl Palmer were the more flamboyant, Greg Lake's contributions cannot be overestimated - a truly great vocalist, superb bassist and fine guitarist, for me he's the one who holds the chaos together. Their real forte though was live performance - check out the version of Pirates, complete with orchestra at Montreal Stadium - Lake's finest moment, imo.
This album is a masterpiece in every respect right down to H R Giger’s cover art which must be in the frame for the greatest of all time. (NB if you were not aware that guy also designed ‘THE’ ALIEN.). Check out their take on the Hymn, ‘Jerusalem’ for another burst of amazingness.
I will be doing Jerusalem next! I've heard a lot of great things about it so far
Don’t forget Toccata
You really need to listen to welcome back my friends to the show that never ends
23:11 Somebody's been reading Aristoteles!
Full electronic drumheads in 1973. A lot of what sounds like a keyboard is Carl Palmer
It is the small victories that you focus on because focusing on the set backs will bring you down and interfere with progress. BTW the hardest for me to quite was smoking. Roll your own cut down on my need for the nicotine but what really did it was when I got that bad flu in 2012. I could not smoke for 2 months and the desire was greatly reduced. It was a lot easier to just take a deep breath and say no.
Should all be played together
Think walking down a deserted alley at night...
If you ever watch a live video of this group Karl Palmer's arms while playing drums are a pure blur....
Find a pic of the "soundboard/mixer" for the keyboards
Now, you have to listen to the rest of the album.... Jerusalem and Toccata ! enjoy !
UA-cam has an old clip of Keith Emerson appearing on Oscar Peterson's show. The two of them jam. You should check it out.
Listen the the live album "Welcome Back My Freinds to the Show that Never Ends...".
The more you listen to them the more you realise that Lake and Palmer are simply keeping up with Keith.
Neal Morse (Spock's Beard days) dancing in his living room with his kids to Karn Evil .. (or Toccatta - it's a while since I've seen that particular vid') Obviously, Sherinian Rudess etc., were brought up on this stuff. It is a battle .. But, don't worry, 'The tapes have recorded their names' .. Quite a good prediction huh! We're just numbers. names on a computer somewhere. So is our money .. :-(
As a drummer your are going to want to see the live version from the 1st impression part 2 from California Jam for Carl's 5 minute drum solo. It is very fast & intense and a lot of work. Also from the same album the studio version of ..."Toccata". ... The 1st ever recorded electric drum solo. Carl is working them so fast that the electronics ... well you just have to hear it and the studio version is best for that. The rest of the album is just as good and includes the Church hymn that was banned by the BBC for being too good. ... "Jerusalem".. Can't turn a church hymn into a rock hit.
Emerson was the Hendrix of the keyboards . Rumor had that they approach Hendrix to join the band thus rename HELP!!
They never would have had a name as stupid as HELP. They weren't idiots. There is no way Emerson was going to give anyone else top billing.
@@RickTBL thank God he didn't!
That is a missed my friend taken completely out of proportion. Here is the real story Emerson and Lake were interviewing Mitch Mitchell of the Jimi Hendrix experience for the drummer roll in what was to become Emerson Lake and Palmer. Mitch Mitchell inquired to Keith Emerson if he was looking for a guitarist to which Keith Emerson replied no mate I want to keep it a trio. Mitch Mitchell then jokingly replied if you are Jimmy's available and you could call the band help. Of course at that time they had already picked Carl Palmer over Mitch Mitchell. Emerson said later although he admired Jimi Hendrix it would have never worked due to EG OS and a different approach to music. There now you have the real story.😊
@@edljnehan2811 Sounds right. I actually met Mitch one night at the old Cat & Fiddle up in Laurel Canyon, around 1984. I asked him about meeting with Keith and Greg. Couldn't really understand what he said, and later felt bad for asking him about something that might have been embarrassing.
@@RickTBL I would imagine he probably didn't want to talk about it since it was a rejection slip for him. Him being one of the greats at the time it probably wasn't easy for him being passed over buy a 20-year-old Carl Palmer. However in hindsight I think Emerson and Lake made the right decision Emerson said as soon as he saw Carl Palmer play it was immediate hands down.
Nice wrap-up to KE9, Lee! Unless I missed them, you still haven't heard either "Jerusalem" or "Toccata" from side 1 of Brain Salad. Looking forward to you hitting those!
hey bob!! thanks, i will add them to the list. also stay tuned this weekend, you might catch something you like.. ;D
@@L33Reacts Just a heads-up, Lee... just ordered you a hard to find CD from overseas that probably won't arrive until the first half of Nov. I must admit the "long 70s" is my favourite era and the "long 90s" my least favourite. Even so, give me any year and I'll bet I can find ten things I love. And there are a lot of great musicians around right now! We never had Nightwish when I was young, for instance.
This song along with Jerusalem are the two best songs on this album. Trilogy and the Endless Enigma on the trilogy album. The Barbarian and knife edge on their debut album. And the tarkus sweet off of the tarkus album. Pictures at an exhibition the entire album. Works the Carl Palmer side. Works too when the apple blossoms and Windmills of your time I'll be your Valentine excuse me if I got the title wrong was an excellent exercise in jazz Rock Fusion even though the title probably turns most of us off😢 welcome back my friends to the show that never ends the best track tarkus😊 that's my opinion on the Alp that I grew up with back in the early 70s😊

Here’s a thought from your 65-year-old original progger across the Pond: have you tried the classic Alan Partridge Project “War of the Worlds”? Or any of Rick Wakeman’s hilarious solo stuff? Give your ears a treat.😊
Parsons, not Partridge - I really shouldn’t comment drunk.
Is their anyone like Emerson, Lake and Palmer today? I will be watching to hear your response.
I don't believe so... they were all so talented and so unique that this is all them. No one else comes close to this sound they made here!

It was amazing :) thank you for the kind words my friend. I'm glad your enjoying them.
Hey,in 40or50 years most of today's music will have been burned, and what remains will be giving new earworms to a new generation. I'm an OF and have to admit that not everything old was worth listening to.
Incredible in a way, as this is almost what may happen to us in the next two decades. I love Karn Evil 9 as a whole. I can't say I prefer one part, they fit together. It was so incredible when it came out. I love ELP a lot but I rank them behind Gentle Giant, Yes and Van der Graaf, because I feel these 3 put more emotions in their work. That may be the reason.
it is already in motion my friend. it's eerie. and poignant. but hey, maybe we will survive and we can build something better.
More emotions? I don't know how a band can put more emotions in their work than ELP..
@@kratino I get that. But feeling emotions is so personal. It's on my side, I know, but I feel them less in ELP. I love their music, especially Tarkus and Karn Evil 9, but I love the other more… don't know why exactly. Hammill, for me, is pure emotion, nobody can go over him in that domain. And Yes is so abstract and, it touches me in a way I can't express.

Kanye sampled King Crimson.
2:35 to 4:07 is Carl Palmer on Steel Drums.
No, Carl is not playing steel drums. It's Keith on a synthesizer. Carl is playing normal drums, which you can hear.
Really?, I could have sworn I saw a concert with the steel drums, but I stand corrected, It was a long time ago. Mick.@@RickTBL
@@michaelperry4308 I thought the same thing at first, but I found that the synth sitting on top of the piano was only there for the steel drum sound. They only did it on the '73/74 tour. Also, I eventually realised that I was hearing regular drums in the background. His regular drum set was made of stainless steel on this tour, but not for Caribbean style steel drums. Maybe that's where the confusion came from: He was playing stainless steel drums for the whole show, but Palmer wasn't doing anything unusual for the Second Impression. So I guess, technically you were correct, he was playing steel drums, but not the steel drum solo. Sorry for the messy answer.
No worries, we were forced to listen to Steel Bands at school and it just sounded so much like it, anyway, glad you like the album, it is fantastic.@@RickTBL
@@michaelperry4308 Brain Salad Surgery is my favorite album of all time. Coincidentally, it was the "steel drum" solo from the Second Impression that got me hooked on ELP. I could not stop listening to it.

i'll take a look, thanks bro!
Try ELP's "Pirates!" Your brain instantly becomes a film director and a movie will play in your head.
that's an awesome title lol i will add it to the list.
Totally agree Pirates became one of my ELP Favs.
There is a powerful ambiguity in Third Impression. The official lyrics are "guardians of a new clear dawn" but, of course, it also comes across as "guardians of a nuclear dawn". I suspect that Pete Sinfield, who wrote the lyrics, was perfectly aware of the double meaning.
ahhhh interesting i didnt catch that. i was still picking my brain off the floor. i will have to give it another listen and catch it.
I always thought "New clear dawn" was supposed to sound like "Nuclear bomb".
I was 20 when this was released, and to this day I always listen to KE9 as one piece.
I always loved ELP's blend of everything and fusions thereof .. raw Rock, blues, Classical adaptations, jazz, ballads...hell even honkey-tonk. Nothing was off limits.
If you're ever interested in ELP's unique take on jazz, check out "When the Apple Blossoms Bloom in the Windmills of Your Mind, I'll Be Your Valentine"
It/They won't disappoint.
dude, you are so right. they just have this aura of... competency at the highest, technical degree. and they incorporate so many different styles and genres that its really hard to replicate. but man, they are so talented its kind of nuts. i bet they can play about everything well.
Honkey Tonk Train Blues from Montreux Jazz Festival 1997🔥🔥
Yes. There is so much more.
I have no opinion on which decade to live in - but you can listen relatively cheap on any genre and almost all of the music of the last 80+ years (maybe rather 300+ y). Back in the 70s I could not afford to get and listen to an album I was not sure to really like! So although I have several early vinyl albums of ELP (and the Nice) I haven't heard this one before! I liked this reaction and it widened my curiosity.
Was 14 when I first heard this album. Obviously the instrumental gymnastics and preposterous lyrics impressed me, but the two pieces that really took me out of my comfort zone were Karn Evil 2nd Impression , Jerusalem, and Alberto Ginestera's Toccata. I'd never heard anything close to this even though I was into King Crimson, Yes, Floyd, GG, PFM, VdGG and more.
Still brings a smile to my face even now.
''No man yields who flies in this ship''..................so out there and so brilliant.
I got to see this live in Oakland California in the late seventies. Completely awesome!!!
🙏🏼 thank YOU for sharing your thoughts on small victories- that struck a chord with me and helped lift my spirits today. 🤘🏼🎧🤟🏼
Hard to believe this music is ~ 50 years. Came out when I was 10, lucky for me I had a friend in 9th grade that was into Yes & ELP and lent me albums - and I loaned him Jimi Hendrix, Coltrane and Frank Zappa. 🎶 🎵 ♾️
All greats !!! And yes... focus on the victories because the set backs will take you down if you let them.
Very appreciative of your reaction style and respect for the music, specifically minimal interruption. A breath of fresh air while bringing back good memories with friends experiencing ELP “from the beginning”…. and with similar commentary, I might add. Thanks!
hey james, I appreciate that my friend! Some people prefer the "Stopping and talking" method but it's just not for me. it ruins the flow and if i stop and talk for 4 minutes and then come back... it's just silly in my opinion. but, i am glad you enjoyed! thanks for watching :D
The live version on the "Welcome Back My Friends" album was mind blowing. - In the end no, I don't think we won. The sequencer at the end always struck me as a final countdown. - Again, it's nice to see the younger generation appreciating the music that I grew up with. - Pirates by ELP would be my recommendation if you want to continue this journey. 👍
Top Shelf - compositionally & technically - became routine for these Maestros .
Their inventory speaks for itself , Lo these many years hence .
Impression 2 has always struck me as a nod to fusion, with strong hints of Weather Report and Chick Corea 🙂
My vinyl copy, the sequencer hits the most inner groove and keeps going.
Thanks to my brother I discovered this at about 12 years old. It intrigued and confused me. Awesome album.
They were/are geniuses. They were great in concert. Emerson played a spinning piano in the air, incredible. Greg Lake was in a league of his own with beautiful vocals and killer bass/ guitar. Carl Palmer is still doing his thing as possibly the best drummer/percussionist of all time. 23:50
That drum break at 16:12 is one of my all time favorites from Carl. So good.
God I miss my Keith Emerson. I cried when he passed away and that's something I never do not even for family members. I still get choked up hearing this stuff😢
Keith's suicide hit me pretty hard unlike the deaths of many other music stars like Prince, Bowie etc.
@@jimhardiman3836 he was special my man and a true giant of a man amongst us mere mortals. And in a lot of ways Carl Palmer isn't too far behind. Please take my advice and Armageddon from 1975 I left information in your comments. It is so good it's musicianship is on the level with e l p and will totally blow your mind. The song Silver tightrope is the most beautiful song in the world it makes Stairway to Heaven and yes even from the beginning look like a kids Disney song. Also the Buzzard off of that same album is a masterpiece in heavy Progressive metal. It will blow your mind as well as your audiences even if they've heard it before. I saw another reviewer do it some black dude who plays drums and he came away awestruck. Listen take my advice I've been into this stuff since the 60s and I'm a musician myself. I can immediately tell by your personality this is something you would love. Once again thanks for playing my favorite band.
Again...my favorite band. Saw them do this twice in '74. Nothing like it. Awesome.
ELP!!!
ELP actually created their own label “ Manticore” at BSS time. Now that you’ve heard this watch their CalJam 74’ 1st Impression live has Carl Palmer drum solo will blow you away
i am doing the carl palmer drum solo next week! i have had it on the list since "lucky man". I still cant believe I started with that song. Lol
@@L33Reactsgood show and that is good news my friend. The Carl Palmer drum solo is probably the best drum solo I've ever seen and I've seen them all. Buddy Rich was a huge fan of Carl Palmer's and used to go to some of his concerts to watch him solo. Buddy Rich was a huge fan of that solo off of the Brain Salad Surgery tour. The California Jam with fast solo is available on UA-cam. Furthermore there's a video on UA-cam badass just called Carl Palmer drum solo where someone is got practically every drum solo he's ever played. He inspired Neil Peart especially when it came to adding all of those percussion pieces that drummers back then usually didn't carry in their drum kits. Palmer was the first true Rock total percussionist as well was the first drummer to design and play his own Electronics and do an electronic drum solo. I believe that show which came out in 1973 was off of an episode of Nova where he demonstrated his electronic drum kit. 2nd to the great Carl Palmer would be bill bruford Neal piert Aynsley Dunbar Terry Bozzio Michael shreves Bobby Caldwell of Armageddon Billy Cobham of jazz-rock fusion Return to Forever and mahavishnu Orchestra, Fusion drummer Dave weckl and a personal favorite of mine Pierre Van Der Linden of focus. Honorable mention Vinnie colaiuta😊 good show you remind me a lot of myself back in the early 70s in looks which is a good thing although my personality was a little more aggressive just a sign of the times😅

Can’t wait to see your reaction to it.
Ending of the third impression is going to blow you away.
Please, please, listen to the MUFFIN man by FRANK ZAPPA!!
You will have a new favorite song,
I GUARANTEE IT!!!!!
If you look into biographical info on Keith, he wasn't "classically educated." (I'd lived with that same presumption for years.) He was just that good.
So many classical influences in ELP music. Kind of like John Williams in the Star Wars sountracks. For the 'triumphant' score, listen to some Elgar. Right in that British imperial wheelhouse.
I always (ALWAYS) throw this in comments: look up Eddie Offord's discography. Your question on how this happened will be answered.
Your deer-in-the-headlights look in the last couple minutes was classic. Nope. We lost.
Keith Emerson was an autodidact also some say a savant. He definitely had a genius IQ. Carl Palmer now he was classically and Jay has trained on percussion😊 I think Greg Lake was sent here by the Angels due to his Angelic voice. Of course Annie Haslam of Renaissance was right behind him.😊
I apologize for this stupid Google transcriptionist. I said Carl Palmer was classically as well as Jazz trained.😮
Oh yes, the original prog is, IMO, THE best ... Not that modern proggers are all that 'shabby' (as Mikael Akerfeldt might say - a genius, imo.) ...
PLEASE react to their version of “Jerusalem”. It’s kind of Britain’s national hymn. It’s the most majestic version I’ve ever heard. It brings tears to my eyes sometimes and I’m not even British.
in some live performances KE treats his hammond organs like rag dolls... it's actually quite concerning at times... is he ok? answer turns out was no, in the long run. but god what an artist. and he and his pals were allowed to do their thing for years with minimal interference from the suits. btw, prog rap... LA group "clipping", track "story 2"... messing with time on this one in a very proggy way. also see Yogev Gabay's great video breaking it down. also just watched the official video again and it struck me from a different angle.
This was the first ever album to have a polyphonic synth on it. It was the Moog Apollo I do believe. Please shoot me down if I'm wrong.
The 'kettle' drum section is AMAZING ... I LOVE IT.. :-)
Oh well , Lee , you re 27 were 60 something’s , take your pick !!
This is scary how prophetic this was. As you said AI is pretty much what they predicted and we are in trouble. Emerson was classic trained but only as a child he didn’t do it to university level
Please!React to angra "Carry on"! Thank you!
'K, gotta ask, you look way too young to have had a current prog rock experience? I'm all old, and consider prog rock the music of my youth.
I will be 30 next year. I just look like I'm 18 l
Still young!😊
