As a Christian who absolutely loves both these boys, I appreciated hearing this from both Ethan and Bo. I go to a very open church in a conservative major city and it's really not all that unique. There's definitely still a lot of older people controlling the vibe and keeping things conservative in many places but many churches are coming around. The rising generation of Christians are much more accepting. Church is for you.
I've been a Christian my whole life and I've had to move a lot because my dad works in the Navy. Ive been to very frew churches that would kick someone out for being gay, trans, addicted to something, a prostitute, etc. The same can largely be said for the Christian college I attend. The only reason they would is if the person was trying to hijack the church or harass the other churchgoers, or if the person was a danger to others.
While this is largely true from my experience, I think it's fair to assume some individuals in the church could have bigoted, close-minded views that leads to them wanting others out. But at the same time I see a lot more animosity and demonization towards specific groups coming from the supposedly "liberal" folks out there.
Vinny everyones a sinner and history and translation errors have changed the bible, and the bible is to be interpreted in your own ways. So if you want to be rude and hateful because people are different and use a book of history to justify it, go ahead. As long as you're happy.
There's also the separation of followers vs nonfollowers ppl seem to forget. The bible doesn't condemn gay people it condemns a gay lifestyle without repentance. And at most, ppl who don't repent for a gay lifestyle just won't be allowed to become members or participate in communion.
The reason you didn't go to many churches that would kick out gays is because people tend to go to churches that fit their beliefs. There are plenty of churches out there who believe homosexuality is wrong, that evolution is a lie, etc.. They're still quite numerous.
The people who are the most vocal and angry are usually the minority of a demographic. I think the style of hostile atheism propagated by Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens only serves to fuel the antagonism a lot of people feel toward the irreligious. Like not everyone who's irreligious is going to be like an edgelord from r/atheism and I think it's unfortunate when I hear religious people scoff or denigrate people if they're atheist.
+Sparta I understand. There are times when people will deal with groups like Westboro Baptist Church or in general austere, strict religious peoples that look down upon them. If they start spouting about how their religion is false or that they're stupid, I can't blame them since they're being attacked. But at the same time I think there needs to be a sense of self awareness when it comes to people who adhere to aggressive atheism because more often than not, they become the very thing they swore to destroy; an annoying ideological talking head that wants everyone to think the way they do via brute force (using either words or fists).
I'm surprised there's confusion on this, I'm Catholic but I don't know of any denomination that forbids people from coming to Church, everyone is welcome. In Catholicism specifically non-Catholics are not allowed to have the Eucharist but it was explicitly taught to me that all are welcome.

It was so nice seeing this side of Bo Burnham. He's so hopeful and open ♡ Church is for the broken not that perfect so that means it's for every single one of us.
Ethan, I attend a baptist church and the community there is extremely welcoming to everyone regardless of where they are spiritually. My experience has been that it’s almost more important for to my church to welcome those who aren’t Christian because that’s the best way to bring in new believers. I know that’s not how every church is, but they’re out there, I promise.
Most churches, including intolerant ones, are about bringing in new members. The only difference is what they expect of their followers. Some churches are cool with homosexuality, whereas others want their followers to behave in a very specific manner. But all of these churches want to grow.
Personally i go to different churches/temples and just ask people questions, really any that don't try to undercut what they think, while still making both them and myself consider this and that

My dad's been a Baptist pastor my whole life, so I've spent a lot of time in churches. I've been an agnostic atheist for as long as I can remember, though I have memories of earnestly praying out of fear, because I he beat me a lot at home. I'm 26 now and haven't talked to him in 6 years. The rest of my family is still religious despite how he also abused my siblings and my mom, so once a year I'll visit her and go along with them to church services, whether they're in a house, a church or a venue. I've been to many different types of churches. However I never go on my own. Churches can be great places for meditation, but you're paying for it with your attention. You almost always have to interact with churchgoers trying to convert you. That's the cost. Don't get me wrong, I've had some really great interactions that weren't forced or blatant proselytizing, but I've also had to endure countless hours of awkward interactions where the person would not budge or let me leave until I either showed no facial expressions of disagreement, or they just got tired and resolved to try again another day. I wouldn't even argue or get mad. They just wouldn't be satisfied unless I responded with complete agreement. I also argued a lot with sunday school teachers as a kid, which got me in trouble and ended up in more beatings, so there's a lot of trauma keeping me away from church. Walking on eggshells around my dad kept my anxiety high and to this day I have problems with my heart rate being too high and my throat closing up. All that being said, I think people should be allowed to go to church as a tool of survival for the marginalized. The institution of religion is one that promotes anti-intellectualism (I've heard multiple preachers talk about how philosophy/logic is a tool of Satan), and heavily contributes to the oppression of marginalized people all over the world. Churches have shown charity but charity is not a sustainable system. Separate church and state. Tax all churches. No exceptions.
I was a christian my entire life up until two years ago. When I was in high school, I decided to continue my faith by learning more about the bible in a bible study class!!! Hoooly fuck how it changed my view on things. After having read the entire bible, watched debates between facts between christian and atheists, I had the biggest mental battle of my life. To believe? or not to believe. My whole life I had the bible taught to me with religion in mind, with ABSOLUTE truth in mind. Learning it from an academic standpoint changes things, and it opened many doors for me to think on my own and i’ve done so much research into it to formulate my own beliefs.
I'm still Christian but I went through the same thing you went through. I felt like I had lost my entire believe system. After doing so much research. I realized NO ONE knows what happens after we die. Not the smartest scientist, spiritual guru, the Pope, no religone NO ONE knows. So I decided to have faith. That that's how I wanted to live my life. I take the bible very litely and NEVER hate or judge. Just being loving and understanding towards everyone. I still have days were I feel atheist. Sometimes it's most days. But I made a promise on these days to just always lean into what's good in life and that's of God. I put in the work and go to church every Sunday, pray, and memorise scripture even if its just one. And sometimes my prayers are so short. Just one saying. Sometimes that's all I can do.
@@rockysandman5489 I'm still in seek of the truth I dont think we can find those answers because no one knows what happens when we die. And you say feel good? I mean I was raised with a certain belief system that there is a heaven and we will see our loved ones again. So yes that brings an amazing peace and unconditional love. To be taught that your whole life and then have it questioned is this really true is heart breaking.
@@kellym5320 Allow me to clarify my question. By 'truth' I mean the truth in general - that which is real, the objective facts, that which accurately reflects reality. Under that definition, do you care about truth? And do you understand that the truth won't necessarily be one that feels good?
Every church I have ever been to has always welcomed anyone and everyone. Just because they dont agree with everything you do, doesn't mean they dont want you there.
Duncan Butcher kinda sad.. shows how the old stubborn christians are tarnishing Christianity and Jesus Christ’s name by only accespting people who look, talk and feel like they do
EnterTextHere_ I'm not sure who said this but I've heard it quoted, something along the lines of "if the chapel doesn't smell like cigarettes and booze we're doing something wrong". The point is to be so loving and welcoming that the people struggling with their sins are coming to church
limp buisness Not all churches are completely open to newcomers. I live in Idaho and whenever a new Mormon temple is built, they have a "grand opening" viewing of the temple that is open to the public for a week or two, but after that period, only LDS people can actually enter it.
The spirituality of a church a temple or a mosque comes purely from the fact that it is a large silent space. Imagine someone shouting in there, or a car coming through the door or even one of the glasses being shattered. That feeling would go away immediately. That shows that the vibe of spirituality is just in your head. We are not used to silence and empty space.
Ethan still hasn't learned after all these interviews that they are about the guest. I know you wanna share a lot too Ethan, but please let your guests express themselves. Please
LOL I was Christian for 19 years of my life and now I am an Athiest 😂 I am the complete opposite of Bo. I say beleieve whatever makes you feel comfortable that will get you through that day, as long as it won't cause any pain or suffering towards yourself or other living beings
I think everyone struggles to accept how much in common they have with those they disagree with. Regardless of your belief, in the end were all in this together.
I am aware that I am a 19 year old in the beginning atheist phase but I think religion affected my life in a more shit way. From being told suicidal people are going to hell (having been one and having known one while he was alive) to my abuser of seven years being a good little Christian wife who is a good mom to my half sister and gives to the homeless. That’s not even the half of it. Religion really fucked me up. I’m sure I’ll mellow out later on in life but for now I’m very passionate and angry about it I guess.
This was really similar to my experience. Grew up in a religious muslim household, then became an atheist around 15. For years I was a hardcore "if you believe in god YOURE STUPID" atheist. Now I've definitely mellowed out and appreciate some religions and religious tradition. Sort of want to join a unitarian universalist church.
I accept what Ethan says, simply being alive feels divine in and of itself sometimes, but that's just a feeling of awe, and curiosity. You can still look up at the stars in wonder, and claim how truly mysterious the universe is. OK, but let's not start filling in the blanks with nonsense about an all powerful creator because there's no evidence that he/she/they/it doesn't exist. You cannot disprove anything if that's the case; that goes for unicorns, leprechauns, or flying pigs. It's illogical to think in such a manner. In fact there's more evidence for Santa Claus being real, with eyewitness testimonies from millions of children across the globe. Do we believe in Santa? No, because he's made up along with the man in the sky.
Yeah, but I don't think Ethan or Bo say "there is mystery in the universe, therefore god" or anything like that. It seems the sense of the divine they're talking about is inherently unknowable because it isn's specific, which is why you an feel it in any church, or any quiet and peaceful place, really.
Everlong Raider but how do you know God doesn’t exist? Or any one of those things you said don’t exist? To make those claims is just as far reaching because you have no evidence to confirm that those things don’t exist. Assuming is a dangerous thing, religious or not.
Asking for evidence that something doesn't exist doesn't make a lot of sense, isn't the burden of truth on the person who makes the claim that something exists?
Jagd Töpfer I believe the burden of truth is on anyone who makes any sort of claim. To claim that something isn’t true takes just as much evidence as it does to claim that it is.
That makes sense. But, depending on the person, the existence of god could be perceived as inherently true or false. So to someone who does not perceive god, the existence of god is a claim and someone who does perceive god would regard nonexistence as a claim. So the question of claim comes down to the individual.
I am a Christian and have been my whole life and I believe church is for everyone, we want as many people to find peace in God as we can so it would just be arrogant to not let someone attend because of who they are everyone is welcome
I think one of the things most people confuse about Churches, like Christianity for example, is that everyone is perfect. As a person whos gone to church for 20 years, I can tell you that there is probably no place more full of hypocrites than a church. But theres those few key people that you meet and interact with who show you the truth of what they believe in.
Mid-fifties here. What you think might be reality really gets solidified once you get out of the arrogant 30's. There's an epiphany coming your way. It will make your 30's seem silly. There's probably another coming my way, which will make my fifties look silly. But at least I'm more committed to my beliefs now. I remember a video where you, Ethan, said you and Hila were Agnostic. What happened to that belief?
i was raised catholic, currently am pulling away from it, but i still value and respect peoples opinions and perspectives on spirituality and think its so harmful when non religious people make blanket statements like “there is no god you idiot” like just let ppl believe what makes them happy, none of us have any idea what we’re doing anyways
I'm kind of the opposite. The older I get the more I despise organized religion. Believing in a God is one thing but joining a religion is absolutely bizarre
there are plenty of churches that will not kick you out for things (unless you are harming or negatively affecting the other people there). even if you are gay, a drug user, or have a bad past, we will still welcome you in and show love to you
You can not claim there is anything divine in the universe while also saying that we can barely understand or comprehend our existence. The proper thing to say is "I don't know".
I cannot stand this interviewer and his constant interrupting. Bo is taking the time to try and make his point and he interrupts to make a stupid joke. Why even interview someone if you don’t give them space to talk.
I'm not sure just shrugging at people who want to shape the world we have and want to bind religion to government isnt any better of a response than being overly zealous. Turkey bans evolution from public schools and it is because of the role religion has there. Caring and being concerned about religion is a good thing.
I am personally believe in the Christian Faith, but I don't hate anyone with a different belief as me. I think that everyone has the right to be who they are. As a person who has gone to church most of their life I have never seen a single person turned away from church. I have never seen an addict, LGBTQ, etc. turned away. If a church turns away someone that just means that they aren't being true christians. If you are truly christian you are taught to never judge anyone. I am not forcing my religion because I have no right to do that, but all I am doing is clearing the controversies of being a christian. Thank you for reading.
I've been an Atheist since 15 or so, mostly because I don't believe that Ethics or Morals have to be based on the existence of a God that will judge you at the end of your life. I think basic morality is a given trait to human beings, although these days that's hard to believe. But I get why religions exist. It's not easy to be a good person while you watch some people behave very badly without an apparent punishment. So, there MUST BE a reason to be good, a REWARD. I know this is a bit cynical, but if that's someone's motivation to be a good person, well, I see that through a 'whatever floats your boat' prism, even though I believe we shouldn't be expecting nothing apart from mutual respect and Ethics between us. Maybe I'm being a bit arrogant. Maybe one day I'll need that kind of justification. Who am I to judge someone's reasons to be good, as long as they're good? This is just an anecdote, but I feel like telling it: I went to a Catholic school, and my parents told me that, on a Parents Association meeting, the Principal once said this about religion: 'If it is indeed a lie, what a blessed lie it is.'
God I used to be such an annoying cringey atheist when I first stopped believing in God. Jesus, I get it though. It's a phase I had to go through and grew out of. Now I don't care. I hold hands and close my eyes when my family prays. No anger, hate or self-righteousness. I'm just like cool, we can all believe in whatever we want. I love them so much I don't care. All I care about is how much I love my friends and family and how grateful I am to have them in my life. Anything else doesn't matter. I even pray along with them because why not, if I don't believe what difference does it make to me? I sing the gospel songs because I grew up with them and honestly, sound wise even without the lyrics they sound pretty good. Life is too short to fuss over such insignificant shit. If wearing a pretty dress and sitting in church makes my mom happy and doesn't hurt me in anyway I don't see the problem.
2:55 well not acording to Orthodox jews you can't. entering MOST churches would be considered Idol worship since it propably has some sort of icon. just my 2 theological cents
You can be agnostic or open to the concept of a greater being without being religious. I'm religiously atheist but spiritually agnostic. There COULD be something bigger than us. Somedays I even believe it.
I think Christian/Catholic schools are very restricting lmao. A lot of people are saying everyone is welcome to church which is very true. But I went to two different catholic high schools. They both were known for having high 'standards' of their reputation instead of caring about the students. One of the schools expelled students when they were pregnant. My sister's friend asked if she could shave her head to raise money for cancer (her friend was sick) and she was told she'd be expelled!! And lots of other petty punishments over the way school uniforms were worn. But also yeah if you weren't catholic is was very hard to get into the schools. They charged a shitton of money and cared 0% about your actual education.
Just to clear things up, you can be Jewish and Christian. They are called Messianic Jews which means they believe that Jesus is the Messiah but also follow Jewish tradition and practices. One of my close friends is a Messianic Jew and he never had problems going to church. :) And YES church is for EVERYBODY regardless of ethnicity or sexual orientation or gender or religious background (or lack of one) etc. If a church tells you otherwise, they are not following Christ's ministry like they are supposed to. I hope and will be praying that Jesus works in you guys because it definitely changed my life!
It’s like watching an adult and a child kinda have a conversation.

@@kellym5320 Do you care about what is true, or do you just care about what makes you feel good?
These comments gave me whiplash
Commander Peridot how did u get the Movie
Gamehaccer5 great movie btw. JK Simmons’s performance is one of his best.
is this one of those spam advertising comments?
DIDYEE no, we’re just a couple of dudes talking about the 2015 Oscar-nominated film, Whiplash.
Tuskey T it's a good one.
Every church I have ever been to has always welcomed anyone and everyone. Just because they dont agree with everything you do, doesn't mean they dont want you there.
Church has perpetrated brutality on humanity. Divinity is for everyone.
Anyone who puts in the work, anyway.
Bo is good at interviewing
Agnostic chat is my kind of chat
Nature supplies that quiet as well . . . a real human need wherever it is met.
I with he would let Bo Burnham talk. I came here to hear his thoughts, but he keeps getting interrupted every two seconds.
This was great to listen to. I hope the world is becoming more and more open like this. It'd be a nice place to live in. Great job, guys!!
We pray to the god of Rick and Morty
To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to pray to the god of Rick and Morty
I thought that is what he said
Pray to the god of brick and mortar
klaus william I’m from a place who can hear correct text where they don’t jump to conclusions.
Warry Jeffner THATS WHAT I HEARD
This was awesome thanks for this video 😁
I am so baffled at how neither of them were completely certain that churches had completely open doors
Duncan Butcher kinda sad.. shows how the old stubborn christians are tarnishing Christianity and Jesus Christ’s name by only accespting people who look, talk and feel like they do
Bo was pretty certain, Ethan not so much
EnterTextHere_ I'm not sure who said this but I've heard it quoted, something along the lines of "if the chapel doesn't smell like cigarettes and booze we're doing something wrong".
Sierra Benson a Mormon church is quite drastically different from a Christian
Who was being interviewed here? Sigh....
3:02 lmao "They wouldn't say a little"
Ethan still hasn't learned after all these interviews that they are about the guest. I know you wanna share a lot too Ethan, but please let your guests express themselves. Please
This is my new favorite video
"I believe in buying books about Budhism and putting them on my bookshelf" lol Ethan
LOL I was Christian for 19 years of my life and now I am an Athiest 😂 I am the complete opposite of Bo. I say beleieve whatever makes you feel comfortable that will get you through that day, as long as it won't cause any pain or suffering towards yourself or other living beings
Sonia Anastasia
That doesn't seem like the opposite of bo?
Sonia Anastasia I'm curious what made you change your mind?
You're not opposite of Bo, cause he's not religious. He's just not oppositional to religion as he used to be, there's a difference.
I think everyone struggles to accept how much in common they have with those they disagree with. Regardless of your belief, in the end were all in this together.
They have a scan to detect Jewish blood at the entrance LOL.
My Presbyterian church is welcome to all kinds of people and never shuns anyone and I am so grateful for that :)
Burnham .. I always knew I liked this guy for a reason.
I’m sorry to hear this. God loves you Ethan and Hila and definitely Bo. Not pushing down your throat but God deeply cares for you
Andrew Holmes Do you speak for god?
Grumpy Snorlax Well if he believes the Bible is God's word then yes.
Grumpy Snorlax I dont speak for god. I just speak in his manner. He has plenty of ways to show Ethan
Truth
I am aware that I am a 19 year old in the beginning atheist phase but I think religion affected my life in a more shit way. From being told suicidal people are going to hell (having been one and having known one while he was alive) to my abuser of seven years being a good little Christian wife who is a good mom to my half sister and gives to the homeless. That’s not even the half of it. Religion really fucked me up. I’m sure I’ll mellow out later on in life but for now I’m very passionate and angry about it I guess.
Love your show guys!
Thanks to the firmament.
i find this particularly relaxing
“Sure, God” Me every Thanksgiving.
Like two of the best people
I believe whatever happens...happens
Amazon bookstores? Fucking hell. Use your public library, people.
Which video was it? (Where ethan and hila mentioned that they were agnostic?
i was raised catholic, currently am pulling away from it, but i still value and respect peoples opinions and perspectives on spirituality and think its so harmful when non religious people make blanket statements like “there is no god you idiot” like just let ppl believe what makes them happy, none of us have any idea what we’re doing anyways
Boop boop bo bo boop idk
Oof. Ethan not getting the "mom and pop, like Amazon" joke hurt me a tad.
Papa bless
I'm not sure just shrugging at people who want to shape the world we have and want to bind religion to government isnt any better of a response than being overly zealous.
Turkey bans evolution from public schools and it is because of the role religion has there. Caring and being concerned about religion is a good thing.
Amazed by Amazon bookstores? Amazon started off by selling books...🤔😂
i'm disappointed that I got a Domino's add before this video and not a Papa John's one.
You belong in a ygs video.
This is just an anecdote, but I feel like telling it:
I went to a Catholic school, and my parents told me that, on a Parents Association meeting, the Principal once said this about religion: 'If it is indeed a lie, what a blessed lie it is.'
Ethan you gotta get a radio deal for Sirius XM
respek
I feel like this is a decent talk.
Bo is my liiiffeee
And then he made Inside...
can you do podcast with Andrew Siwicki?
I never get people who buy books online unless they've got no time or it's like an emergency of some sort.
Are you going to upload the whole conversation as one video?
spiritually agnostic, thats how ive been for quite some time
Ethan it’s actually shush shush 🤫 time now especially when bo is talking
THE SPAGHETTI MONSTER RULES ALL!!!
did anyone else hear brick and mortar as Rick and Morty?
I say believe whatever you want, as long as you can prove it’s true, than you’re good. Easy.
Spirituality is legit. Especially lately. Lots and lots of people are starting to believe.
I go to a pentecostal church and you better believe we let anyone through our doors. Jesus was all about that.
People who think that "logic and reason" are what you use to navigate the unknowns of the Universe should look up "Godel's Incompleteness Theorem".
I hope and will be praying that Jesus works in you guys because it definitely changed my life!
these are the kind of agnostics I like. I don't give a shit about what you believe, just don't give a shit about what I believe.
