  • Alabanza comes from the musical "In The Heights" and is a blessing and farewell-sendoff to the character Abuela Claudia, who dies unexpectedly in the show. Alabanza was a phrase she said when enjoying the smallest and most ordinary things any other person would overlook.
Abuela Claudia was a grandmother to everyone in the Barrio without having any relation to any of them.
The three names I sing are three grandmother-like figures I had in my life while my own grandparents had passed years ago. I am not a particularly religious person, but I felt inspired to sing this as I hope these women are with God, in the afterlife without suffering or struggle. Praise them, the women that they are, the wives, companions, mothers, grandmothers, teachers, caretakers, and other titles they held while living, and continue to hold while looking down upon those they loved and watching over them.
I think about each woman often, and I will continue to do so.
For I believe a person dies twice, once when their physical body expires, and the last time when their memory is no longer recalled. As long as I am living. I will keep them living in my memories, and share my memories of them with future generations, as my parents did for their grandparents and friends who were like grandparents to them.
