      @@sentient7707 because this song is based on the traumatic experiences and growth of a black woman. Even if it is not based on a true story, this is a piece of art that means a lot to black women that can relate to it. Natalie, made light of the subject and made jokes in performance as well as a few others which is quite insensitive and disrespectful.

    My issues with her singing it.. This song is about a black woman in the racist south struggling with poverty, social identity, and sexual orientation identity issues,that has been told you are ugly and black and you will never amount to anything. This was her take back charge moment. She won't let anyone lead her life for her. Not the racist people, not her husband not her lover. She's beautiful and she's here

      Well you see, in America today, nobody is going to face nearly as much racism as Celie did. While POC do face many problems, they are not going to have the same experiences and struggles that Celie did. Anyone living in a first world country is going to have to relate this song to other problems in their life. Really singing is about having fun getting to step into the shoes of multiple different characters. Should people who aren't black be cast in the play? Definitely not. But does that mean we should prevent people from singing what they want at a benefit concert due to the color of their skin? Definitely not.

    This was a complete turn off. Performing this song without depth and emotion, thus cheapening the message and lyrics. The buildup in latter part of song is suppose to build to invoke Celie's triumphant revelation about her and her life, and not be reduced to an up tempo pop melody. She was clearly "performing" with no reverence for message, but just to show her vocal ability. Very disappointing.

    • @joshuamessmore5146
      @joshuamessmore5146 5 років тому +6

      She’s performing at a vocal concert, not in the broadway show, so of course she’s performing to show her voice. I understand why people might think shes cheapening the emotions, but the song at face value and not connected to a external plot line is a feel good empowering song, so natalie sang interpreted it upbeat and positive for the concert.

      Branden R. Mangan I agree. She is very talented. I mean, performing a song because you love it and wanna sing it at a showcase or something is different from singing it in a show. I am sure she has respect for the message, but she was probably just trying to enjoy a song she liked. And for the record, she has probably been called ugly and insulted before too as many people have. She probably relates to it on some level and that is most important. I think she did a great job in her rendition of this song. Many people involved with theatre are only actors because they were bullied or outcasted and singing was their escape. I can bet that she has a story similar to that. I mean, I love singing Daddy's Son from Ragtime and I have never experienced any of the struggles that character has. I just have an understanding and respect for it. And this girl clearly respects and loves this song.

    Ugh. I was already put off by her disgusting comment when she was having trouble with the mic stand. I'm not impressed with her interpretation of this song. She has a good voice but no artistry at all. She's not in tune with what this song is about on any level, she's just belting notes. I agree with Vincent DiGeronimo, being able to do riffs isn't equivalent to being a good singer. Being a good singer means knowing when certain things like riffs and turns are tasteful and when they're not.

      She has a great voice. However, with that song & lyric... It needs to also come with a connection to the lyric and be presented in a certain way. If someone sang that who didn't have an amazing voice but totally tapped into the meaning, that would move people more. It was more of an open mic approach. It's not just about the voice and acrobatics... You HAVE TO TAP INTO the lyric and meaning.

    This song can be sung by anyone who wants to sing it. Yes I will concede to admitting that she did make some unnesscesary riffs and comments. But anyone has the right to sing this song as it can be interpreted any way the singer wants to interpret it. Every vocalist has different struggles they can connect to this song with. I'm not trying to irritate anyone whatsoever but I just think we all need to appreciate vocalists for who they are the different skills they have because I know there is no way I would ever be able to vocally and emotionally match up to this song but I still like to sing this song because I love the song and I love the message it sends. Sorry if this irritated anyone I just hate seeing incredible negativity on people that use their abilities for good and I'd be willing to bet that she didn't mean to hurt or offend anyone she just wanted to make the song her own and I think we should all admit that she did just tha.

      and i oop- you can STILL cover a song. No one was arguing that the song was MADE for her or white people. And I Am Telling You is another song written for a strong black woman and yet many people have covered it. You’re telling me you’ve never sung along while listening to And I Am Telling You or I’m Here? She wasn’t singing it in the context of the show. She was covering it. She did not claim to understand exactly what Celie was feeling and resonate with the issues black women face then and now. She was performing a Broadway song. Might as well hate on every nb singer who’s covered this song.

    • @kingofmeereen
      @kingofmeereen 4 роки тому +1

      and i oop- that’s where you’re wrong- again - because people were commenting how she shouldn’t cover this song because she’s not black and the song wasn’t hers to sing. I agree, her additions were not the best, but she was not performing the song in the context of the show, she was singing it at a concert. She does the same kind of arrangement for other Broadway songs. She jazzes it up and adds “unnecessary” riffs. If it was a black performer singing this song though, any riff they add would be deemed necessary- which is fine. Lol. It’s whatever. If you’re not part of the percentage that says she shouldn’t sing this period, then my comments don’t apply to you.

    First and foremost I want to say that I love Natalie Weiss. However this is a problem for me. Because this song is one of the staples of black empowerment in theatre. When this song is sung it should be with the message it represents that’s why it speaks to so many people. Natalie cannot represent that message because that message is specific to a certain community. Cynthia doesn’t even sing this song often because she has said that it is too taxing and too special to be used as some sort of party trick. So the fact that she is singing this as if it’s some normal pop song is really disappointing, because it showing her lack of respect and empathy for the song and it’s purpose. Just because she can doesn’t mean she should.

      Arielle Clarke no i do. i also understand that blocking off a song as only being for one race is racist. she has every right to sing this song and that is a fact.

      @@user-hv7mb3ye2v some song roles are MEANT for one race, especially considering the point of celies race in the entire musical. her singing this song as separate is totally fine. but i completely disagree about your point that the race of a singer for a song is irrelevant. also, how is it racist?

    • @user-hv7mb3ye2v

      Arielle Clarke its racist because you are discriminating against white people by saying that this song isnt "meant" for them. its meant for whoever wants to sing it regardless of what the singer looks like. you have no control over what other people sing because any form of art is open to all people.

      @@user-hv7mb3ye2v roles meant for poc have no business not being occupied by poc. especially in the mt world. like i said, separating the song from the role to just sing in a concert setting is fine, but in terms of ROLES, poc roles should be filled by poc. thats not discrimination against white people, especially when they occupy the majority of roles currently as well as throughout history.

    the song fits perfect to her voice; even better than the actresses that have played this role in the musical. Sadly (for her) this song is not just about the great voice register or the very good technique she has. It is about feelings and the way they take part in the interpretation. My favourite is obviously Fantasia!
