He probably just used it to show it works.
If you mean the instrument for drawing arcs or circles, it's not a compass. It's a pair of compasses.

How do i use it outside
Use the piggy back compass on your sensorless phone. Point the arrow on your phone from South to North of your D.I.Y compass.
To calibrate the digitally rotatable protractor of the piggy back compass, add offset to North South line equal to the magnetic declination at your location (find it online).
Once both both arrows are aligned you have a compass on your phone ! NOW TAP TOWARDS DIRECTION YOU WANT TO GO. AN ARROW SHOULD APPEAR AND AN AZIMUTH READOUT OF THE DIRECTION.
GUESS THE DISTANCE TO THAT NICE PATCH OF GREEN GRASS YOU WANT TO LOCK ON TO.
THEN CLICK ON NAVIGATE BUTTON.
WHERE TO GET THE COMPASS ??? ITS ONLY ON MY PHONE. I PROGRAMMED IT. WORKS PERFECT ! AS PERFECT AS YOUR EXTERNAL MAGNETIC COMPASS NORTH SOUTH LINE.
AT A FRACTION OF COMPASS PHONE COST.

Can we use something else than magnet
Yes, black sand with magnetite. I filled bottom coke can of 4 taped together cans with sand, through in lagoon water and it slanted towards magnetic North everytime
U don't need water or any glue or anything all u need is just a magnet which is disk shaped and just place it on a surface with is flat and has no metal near by and then the magnet will face north and south u just need a phone to see which is north and which is south

No it is not battery. It is the same magnet used to chase away sharks. Keep away from analogue watches with metal parts, else you would have to buy demagnetizer unit for your watch.
