    Great video finally someone explains the basics of how to make a compass.
    I have just one question would a stainless steel work in the place of the aluminium, I think stainless steel does not affect the magnetic field of the magnet.
    And I also wanted to know if the case could be made out of stainless steel.
    I'm asking this because I want to use the concept to make one that looks vintage.

      Please note that some stainless steel components may affect the magnetic field. I think the case can be made of stainless steel, which does not affect the magnetic field

      I think any material that does not affect the magnetic field can be used in place of cardboard. For example, aluminum, brass, copper, etc.

      The inner diameter of the plastic is 38mm and the height is 25mm.
      A neodymium magnet has a diameter of 6 mm and a thickness of 2.5 mm.
      The countersunk screw has a diameter of 2 mm and a length of 15 mm.
      The nail is 1mm in diameter and 17mm in length.
      The aluminum plate has a diameter of 37 mm.
      The long side of the rectangular paper is 111mm and the widths are 5mm and 10mm.

    I really like your compass design. We are making 80 of these and I don’t want to have to cut out that many circles from aluminum cans. Could a flexible plastic be used instead?

    Say you wanted to make a working compass inside a metal stopwatch. Would it still work or does it need to be plastic?

      I think to work as long as such as copper or aluminum, which does not disturb the magnetic field.

      Ferrite magnets may not work because they are not as strong as neodymium magnets. If you have a ferrite magnet, please try it.

      Looks like both have holes but because the needle had to poke through them, i think only the one on top is the one that actually needs it

      In addition to aluminum, copper, brass and plastic can be used.
      Anything that disturbs the Earth's magnetism, such as iron or stainless steel, cannot be used.

    compass ins interesting but can you put in detail where did u get the parts from (aluminium can) is it from a bottle ? also put the links for the part to buy online if possible?. pretty new to science project and not sure where to buy these parts

      Needs more specific details like whats the neodymium magnet dimension 6X2mm or 6X3mm iron screw and nails exact name and dimension if possible.

      Aluminum is a can of juice or beer.
      Other parts were also purchased at the DIY store. I didn't buy it online.
      Neodymium magnets and iron screws don't really care about their dimensions.
      All you have to do is fit it in a plastic case.

      Neodymium magnets are 6 mm in diameter and 2 mm thick.
      The aluminum plate has a diameter of 37 mm, the iron nail has a diameter of 0.8 mm and a length of 17 mm, and the iron screw has a diameter of 2 mm and a length of 15 mm.
