Great video finally someone explains the basics of how to make a compass. I have just one question would a stainless steel work in the place of the aluminium, I think stainless steel does not affect the magnetic field of the magnet. And I also wanted to know if the case could be made out of stainless steel. I'm asking this because I want to use the concept to make one that looks vintage.
Thank you for visiting. Please note that some stainless steel components may affect the magnetic field. I think the case can be made of stainless steel, which does not affect the magnetic field
Very nice video for making magnetic compass....Please share measurement details of plastic container, nail, small screws and round & long sheets used for making it.
Thank you for visiting. The inner diameter of the plastic is 38mm and the height is 25mm. A neodymium magnet has a diameter of 6 mm and a thickness of 2.5 mm. The countersunk screw has a diameter of 2 mm and a length of 15 mm. The nail is 1mm in diameter and 17mm in length. The aluminum plate has a diameter of 37 mm. The long side of the rectangular paper is 111mm and the widths are 5mm and 10mm.
How is it do u make it so it’s the accurate in terms of North South etc.. This is for a school project so I need to explain how it’s accurate and how it’s magnetic
I really like your compass design. We are making 80 of these and I don’t want to have to cut out that many circles from aluminum cans. Could a flexible plastic be used instead?
In addition to aluminum, copper, brass and plastic can be used. Anything that disturbs the Earth's magnetism, such as iron or stainless steel, cannot be used. Thank you for watching.
compass ins interesting but can you put in detail where did u get the parts from (aluminium can) is it from a bottle ? also put the links for the part to buy online if possible?. pretty new to science project and not sure where to buy these parts
Aluminum is a can of juice or beer. Other parts were also purchased at the DIY store. I didn't buy it online. Neodymium magnets and iron screws don't really care about their dimensions. All you have to do is fit it in a plastic case.

Are there any other required dimensions?

I think any material that does not affect the magnetic field can be used in place of cardboard. For example, aluminum, brass, copper, etc.

If the axis of the compass can be supported, I think plastic is also acceptable. Please try it.
yattemita325 I ordered very thin acrylic discs...I’m going to try it and see if it works and let you know. We will drill tiny holes in the top disc.
I too
Say you wanted to make a working compass inside a metal stopwatch. Would it still work or does it need to be plastic?
I think to work as long as such as copper or aluminum, which does not disturb the magnetic field.

could you give me the instructions I would like to try this please
Which instructions?
Is plastic case necessary?
Yes.
Thank you for watching.
Would a ferrite magnet work too? Or would it be not strong enough?
Ferrite magnets may not work because they are not as strong as neodymium magnets. If you have a ferrite magnet, please try it.
We have make hole in both the alluminium circles? Or only in the top one?
Looks like both have holes but because the needle had to poke through them, i think only the one on top is the one that actually needs it
Both aluminum circles are perforated.
