Another PB Fishing At Dawn In The Campaspe River

- I'm starting to get used to getting up at 5am! This time I headed to a spot that I haven't fished for a couple of years to drown some Jan Juc worms, and also introduced some freshwater shrimp into the mix once my net landed a few. I'm very happy to say that 4 out of 5 catches were natives, including 2 silver perch! But only 3 out of 5 were fish LOL. The PB was the biggest turtle I've ever seen/caught, it was rounder than a dinner plate and was very heavy! Handling it was nerve racking because it had such a long neck it looked like it could bite me wherever I grabbed onto it haha.

That "pulse" you mentioned feeling in the little Silver Rohan has earnt them the nickname "grunter:" Strong little buggers .

You can hear it with the big ones, I used to call them grunters as a kid since that's what the older folks referred to them as.

Silver perch can be a tricky to hook ay. Imagine a yellas mouth but half of the size. That’s them for ya but they’re super fun especially on light gear. I dunno if this is a myth but I think silvers can grunt at you but they do like to bend like a banana.

Thanks heaps mate. Silvers are actually a species of grunter despite being called a perch, and they can definitely grunt I've heard a few in my time haha. They love to bend for sure lol. Thanks again
when i was growing up and my dad use to take me fishing with his mates they use to call the old worm/shrimp bait a mixed grill, from memory it wasn t a bad bait

Someone told me they are a 'western carp gudgeon' which is a native fish! Glad someone knew what they were because when I tried to google different types of minnows it just showed me heaps of different lures LOL

@@RKJFishing thanks Rohan. Yes getting better but my first dose of COVID has hit pretty hard. I hoping to get out fishing this weekend which is about 14 days since I had COVID. So don’t know how Robbie did it so soon but good on him

Hey buddy thanks heaps and thanks for your concern, I'm actually feeling great at the moment, I was just keeping my voice down because of the guy in the swag that was camped just upstream haha. I boosted the volume a bit which might have made my voice sound a bit hoarse

Those little fish will be murray river rainbow fish. We get them over in the loddon alot
Possibly but these were quite transparent, rainbow fish tend to have scales kind of like a carp. Not 100% sure

Bit hard to tell from the video but those minnows are either gambusia or one of several types of carp gudgeon

I took my son and nephew there two weeks ago lost a big carp got two more carp a silver and a red to your right in the leafs above the stones are heaps of worms
Ah yeah there's plenty of carp around. Good to see the silvers in there though. Haha yeah thats been a good spot for worms since the stones have been there.

G'day Rowan Happy new year buddy, was that a long neck Murray. I recently bought my daughter a short Neck Murray but I'm looking after it, you might know if l we're get rid off him in the compaspe would that be ok to do so and would be survive.
Thanks heaps mate, happy new year! I'm really not sure about the rules regarding turtles but they usually recommend not releasing tamed pets into the wild because they aren't used to providing for themselves, and they also get exposed to all kinds of viruses and stuff that they aren't ready for.

Thanks heaps Cooper! Try to fish close to the snags (without losing lures if possible LOL). Cod are an ambush predator so they hide under and behind structure to ambush their prey. Casting along the banks can be good if it looks like the water might undercut the dirt a bit. Good luck mate

I had to google that to see what you were even talking about, but I reckon you're right Phil! The broad shelled river turtle looks exactly like what I caught. What a monster! I'm proud to have seen one in person
@@RKJFishing Used to encounter them more often when I was a kid. They are different from the common longneck by being lager and having a plain belly instead of the markings of that species. Classified as "vurnerable" in Vic.
