LoL. The audiobooks of Dresden FIles are read by James Marsters (Spike from Buffy & Angel), & he does a fantastic job.
I realized that after I made the 400 Buffy comparisons. I talk about it in the review for Storm Front & Fool Moon.
They are the best. I have to say that this is my favorite series. James is Harry Dresden IMO.
Listened to an audio version of Ghost Story that didn't have Marsters and it just wasn't the same. He goes all-in and nails those books.
Dan Hathaway Penguin re-recorded Ghost Story with James Marsters because of the backlash. It was redeemed.
You are absolutely right Ren. James started good but after the first 5 it becomes Harry totally.
'Yer a wizard, Harry.'
"Yer an @$$hole, Thomas."
Ahh, brothers~
As the dad of two young boys, I can only hope they banter like this one day.
Jim Butcher looks like someone who would cosplay as a Jim Butcher character. lol he's a real person and a mad genius. Can't wait for you to continue, just about everything gets better as it progresses.
Ha ha very true
BTW the best way to experience DF is with James Marsters reading them.
Yeah. Ghost story was weird without his voice. I wonder why they used someone else for that one.
@@pimpslickness He wasn't available at the time. Ghost Story was rerecorded with James Marsters.
I am sure it is great, but the best way, as always, is actually reading the book.
Absolutely. My library had them available online.
Hollywood elevator pitch for Dresden files by Jim Butcher, 3 words;
Dirty Harry Potter
😂
Perfect.
To be honest, everytime I hear it I think of a Harry Potter Porno
@@rettthebest yuuuppp......
Accurate enough lol, especially since he upgrades his gun every so often. Though i never figured he'd go so far as a .50, but hell, if you can handle it, why not?😄
I'd love to see reviews on Dresden Files. There is a larger story in the background but each book is a contained story with a clear beginning and end. I think it would be difficult to do more than two books in each review.
Stubble McShave If the books get more complex and have bigger events that need talked about, I’ll switch to one review for each. These two were just so short and kind of bled together for me.
Slight correction: each book is a contained story, except for the last book, Peace Talks. Due to publishing issues, as far as I can tell.
@@FelineElaj Even Peace Talks is mostly Self Contained. oh sure there is a larger event and that makes a single story but... I'm rambling, but yeah Peace Talks has a ending, and then a Cliff Hanger all in one.
I think the Knights of the Denarius are crazy enough to make the whole deal that much better. Also, seeing how Molly develops is so fucking good.
Also, I am in love with Mab. She's great. I would easily take the Winter Knight mantle, though I know I would be of no use to her.
I have a few fan theories about some of the characters that I’m dying to see if I’ve guessed correctly or not, or if my theories even get touched upon in the books at all.
Good choice. I'm on my third read through in preparation for peace talks. This series is like a fine wine as far as I'm concerned. It's just gets better with time
I'm loving it and I'm only halfway done.
I understand that the first two books are not the best because he was still learning and developing, but I was so entertained and instantly loved Harry's voice that I happily continued through the next and the next, etc. He hasn't disappointed me yet. And I am so happy that there are TWO books coming out this year. YES!!!!
Same! I thought “if this is the worst the series has to offer, I’m going to become a mega-fan.” I’m on book 8 now and still loving it.
@@mikesbookreviews I reread the series every year. All of them, lol. I guess I'm a fan.
I like your videos because it seems like you are a friend of mine giving honest and truthful recommendations, and I respect your tastes and opinions. I'm starting to read the Dresden Files. Thank you from Brazil!
The Dresden files...all day every day! This is my go to when I really want to hang out with characters I really like hanging out with. The books grow with the maturity of both the character and the author. They do you get better as they go along and if you’re reading at the pace you mentioned in your review of the first two books, you should be able to catch up when Peace Talks drops in July. From the get go, Jim planned for 21-23 books with a final apocalyptic trilogy to wrap things up. Part of the reason for the delay of book 16 was the polishing of his second short story compilation in addition to a boatload of life changes. The first two books are great, but most hardcore Dresden Fans agree that even though the stories stand for themselves and all are part of the overall story arc, The long game really starts in book three and picks up momentum with each novel. I’m sure you know Jim also has a six book high fantasy series called the Codex Alera and a new Steam punk/fantasy series called The Cinder Spires which is one book in with a second on the way.
I've hard about the personal life issues delaying the book. I get that much more than Martin just saying they're "hard" or Rothfuss just telling anyone who asks to go F themselves. I'm probably starting Grave Peril today. I'm not sure if I'll catch up by July with all of the other stuff I'm reading, but if I use them as a palate cleanser between each book, it isn't out of the realm of possibility.
The Alera books are so great.
The first two books show that they were Butcher's first publishable books. They start slow, but end very strong. Before writing the third novel (Grave Peril), he saw the movie Lethal Weapon 2 and wanted to start his next book off with a bang, as the movie did. He opened the book with a car chase for Harry and his friend Michael to get to a hospital in time to save a bunch of babies. Since that time, each book gets better than the book before as he continues to grow as a writer.
Hey Mike, I loved your idea of palette cleansers so I started reading these between the Red Rising books. I’m almost done with Storm Front (which I’m really enjoying as well). Can’t wait to jump into Golden Son with the rest of you.
Ever since I couldn't finish LOTR as a teen I have been self conscious about my reading anything like this because it was too easy. A friend had all the books up to changes and I flew through them. So much fun to read and I would love a discussion about them. I was so confused because I thought the first three were good, but the series does get so much better! Also having Spike read the audio books is the cherry on top.
They do indeed seem to get better. I’m about halfway through book 9.
Thanks for the video. I've been debating on starting this and just picked it up for a surgery I'm having this week. Well for after it
I'd love to hear more from you about Dresden Files in the future.
Just started on the series myself and I've liked most of what I've seen so far. :)
fallout766 I’d love to do some “read alongs” with you guys on these.
@@mikesbookreviews I'd love to join along on that, recently finished the second book myself as well.
I just finished the first book. Thanks for mentioning them so often on your channel.
Love the Dresden files! This videos is the first one I’ve watched by you. I’ll have to check out some of your other stuff.
I just want to let you know that your “why you should read” for Red Rising is why I picked that series up and I absolutely loved it! So I’m glad you made that video and I’d love more red rising
Freaking love DF. Love hearing the perspective of a new ear!!
That's why I've continued to do them. I love interacting with the fans, even if a handful of them tell me I'm wrong about everything. Heh.
Thank for bringing up Angel, that show was my favorite at the time. The ending was so tragically epic. I can’t believe I never drew the parallels between Angel and Dresden Files. I love the series, I smashed through all of them in like a 5 month span and I can’t wait for Peace Talks. Awesome Video too, you have a new subscriber.
Now I want the crossover where Harry has to go to LA and then teams up with Angel to fight a demon.
It took me half a book to stop thinking "you're a wizard Harry" haha. It fades away I think due to how incredibly well Butcher write the Harry Dresden character.
The palette cleansing point hits home for me! I finished both Kingkiller Chronicle books last week after my impatience got the better of me while waiting for the completed trilogy. Finishing Storm Front last night and watching this I realise it was a perfect palette cleanser.
This is the first of your videos I have watched, just randomly stumbled upon your channel! It's great to find a booktuber with a similar philosophy and taste! Keep it up.
These books are not just candy. Butcher is sweet. But he's honey sweet, maple syrup sweet. Not white sugar sweet. Butcher is a nerd. But he's philosophically profound, and morally anchored. Plus, dude can write his ass off. Dig it.
Was looking up "Jim Butcher Peace Talks" videos on YT when I found this. Just saw how far behind I was on your reviews... heading into them now, LOL.
Awesome. Happy to hear it's showing up in searches.
I'm all about the Dresden Files. I will listen to any review about the Dresden Files.
Good to hear since I've done 7 of them and plan to do all of them before Peace Talks comes out.
I have fallen in love with this series this summer. I started reading it back in late march and I am finishing Grave Peril now. I can hardly wait for the next one!
Love the Dresden Files. Please do more about it!

@@mikesbookreviews That is great! Thank you. I think you're going to really enjoy the series. Just wait for Changes....
Also, I highly recommend the audiobooks. 💟💟💟 They are narrated by James Marsters, our favorite, Spike! He is an excellent narrator. He does so many different voices, accents,. It's just great. He is one of my favorite audiobook narrators ever.
Please continue, i like hearing other peoples thoughts on things that i love...even if they have a different opinion.
Just finished the series after seeing this vid. Loved it! Just started Wheel of time series, wish me luck...
Just started the series thanks to your videos!!!
Hope you enjoy it as much as I have up to this point.
I remember when I bought my first Kindle e-reader back in 2005-ish(?) and discovered The Dresden Files. They were the first books I read on it and flew through all that were out at the time, but never went back to them until now (I just finished Storm Front and I'll watch your review soon). These books definitely filled the void while waiting (and waiting!) for the next book in the ASOIAF series (which ending up being 6 years!), as well as a break from "The Slog" of WoT, which I've put back on my TBR for 2020-2021. Keep up the great work, Mike!
I'm certainly grateful I jumped on board when it seems Butcher is rolling again.
Mike: The DF are like candy.
Me: Oh you poor man. Changes is going to wreck your sweet innocent soul.
🤣
I hope so. It’s like what Joss Whedon used to say about Buffy; when Buffy is happy, show is good. When Buffy is miserable, show is amazing.
Your future is... pain.
My future was pain.
I feel so ashamed, but I started reading the series at Changes. And damn, was that an awesome book!
@@readyok8230 Noooooo!!!! You spoiled yourself! The human brain can't take such levels of awesomeness so directly! Are you ok???
😁
James Marsters was Spike in Angel and Buffy and is the narrator of the Dresden files in audiobooks he brings these books alive and makes them a million times better. You should check them out
Thank you for recommending this I started & thoroughly enjoying it so far. Like you I am old enough to remember the HP craziness & is still very close to my heart. Buffy also lol it was funny, corny & fabulous. I just discovered your channel & appreciate your opinion.
Thank you for recommending this series I never would’ve picked this type of fantasy book , I’m currently halfway through Blood Rites
Binge watched all your dresden files review, and 17 bookmails are now on their way home :)
The Dresden Files is my favorite series, and I would love to see some in-depth analyses for each book. Especially the later books rally start to get complex.
I've reviewed the first 7. I do spoiler reviews for 3-7.
@@mikesbookreviews Yes, thank you! I'm going through your videos now. Are you doing discussion anywhere, or just in the comments? I love this series, and love any chance to chew it over with people.
@@ianperez7668 discordapp.com/invite/vM6Kg7
There is more on the Discord. We have a Dresden Files section.
This video was a better hook than when Pat Rothfuss talked about Dresden Files. That opener cracked me, lmao.
Thanks! What did Rothfuss say?
@@mikesbookreviews he just rambled on about how much he loves the Dresden Files and why it would be blasphemous not to read the series. Honestly, that introduction of yours sent my brain to wanting to impulsively buy this book, lol.
@@Law-of-EnTropy That's awesome. I can't take full credit since I'm reading straight from the book. But if you like the dialogue, I'm sure you'll enjoy the reads.
@@mikesbookreviews I can already see it. That "I'm in the book" line was probably the best line I had ever heard from a first-person narrator.
@@Law-of-EnTropy For sure. That's why I chose it. The whole passage stuck with me. Perfect closer.
Lmao Fam. Listen to the Audiobooks. Why? Because they are read by Spike from Buffy The Vampire Slayer 😂. Also. He is ABSOLUTELY HARRY DRESDEN. He nails the series with his reading of it. Trust me. Its goooood
Definitely interested in your opinion of the next two.
I personally tell everyone to start on three. That's when the books become semi-serialized instead of outright episodic.
Awesome, adding to the list, if hasn't been said already, Butcher's Codex Alera is equally amazing, and also totally insane. Short pitch for the series
Roman legionaries who are all Avatar style elemental benders, versus: beastmaster, barbarian elves; cryokentic yeti's; nine foot tall, blood magic wielding wolf-men; and their own GoT level political maneuvering and backstabbing; all ending up facing the Zerg.
With all the insane epic Butcher does so well in Dresden, with the added bonus of being completed.
I already have all of the Codex Alera series on my Kindle. After how much I've enjoyed Butcher's writing, I'll give anything else he writes a shot.
The Dresden Files rocks. Each book gets better, as he has grown into the series, and the characters get more developed. The fans have been waiting for the latest book for some time, there are multiple explanations/theories on the reasons for the book's delay, so Dresden's popularity has died down a bit. The audio books are read by James Marsters and he does a great job. He played Spike on Buffy and Angel. = ]
I'm well aware of Marsters. I think that's super cool and a nice tie in for my constant Buffy/Angel comparisons.
After reading the series and then listening to it Marsters became Dresdens voice in my head. He's great for the part.
Huge Jim Butcher fan, read all his novels. In addition to Dresden the Codex Alera is a highly underrated fantasy series. Cinder Spires had a nice start, hopefully Butcher gets backs back to that now that Peace Talks is done.
After getting a few books into DF, I picked up the digital version of Codex Alera.
Now that he's done with peace talks and battle ground (2 df books in one year, YAY!!), he's now working on the Olympian Affair, book 2 of the Cinder Spires
love your style subbed
You should definitely talk more about this series. I got hooked in 2007 and never looked back. Peace Talks can’t come out soon enough. If you have a long commute somewhere, the audiobooks are highly recommended.
Going to try and slam down 2 books per month leading up to Peace Talks.
By far my favorite series ever. Please go on...
love the -Why I Decided to Read- videos.
I appreciate that ha ha
Love Dresden Files. Waiting for the next book.
I LOVE the Dresden Files. Been a fan since 2015, and with the new book coming out, I've been re-reading them. It's been so much fun. Definitely my favorite book series right now.
Interesting fact, Butcher was also writing Dresden AND Codex Alera at the same time for 6 years. He's been a powerhouse for releasing books for a while. He also started another series called The Cinder Spires. I'm glad that his life has finally calmed down a bit and he can get back to writing so hopefully we have less delays in the future. :)
From what I've read up on (I was careful out of fear of spoilers), he had valid reasons and they seem to be resolved now.
I envy you, getting to read these books for the first time. I've read and reread them over and over... and over... and... well you get the point. Jim started writing the series while learning to write, as in he wrote the first one as a class assignment. They only get better and better with self contained story lines but subplots that, as you go on, you realize are the main plot or building the road to the end. And the series has a definitive beginning and end which is a plus in my book. To often books seem to go on forever without really seeming to stray far from their origins and patterns. This is the only series of book, that I have literally torn pages from turning them to quickly. This is the only series I've read to legitimately make me cry. This is hands down my favorite series of book. Though Jim's other works are also on the list of favorites.
Yeah, I feel spoiled not having to wait 5 years for Peace Talks like the rest have.
Oh the crying. Changes! The most heartbreaking book I have read yet.
So funny, this is almost exactly my experience with Dresden Files aswell massive Buffy/Angel fan just started the books a couple of months ago on book 6 atm. I thought the same thing about Murphy when I read Stormfront. Books 3 and 4 have been my favorites so far just great. The actor who plays Spike in Buffy/Angel James Marsters does the audiobooks and is excellent another connection there too.
Nyc I’ve heard about the audiobooks. I did listen to a sample just to hear Spike. Was disappointed he wasn’t using his fake English accent and then I heard he uses it for Bob.
On my third re-read heading into the next book coming out this summer. Love it. The first 3 books are a bit of a slog, but they don't just get better each book going forward, the get Hella better. (last "spoiler" from me, lol)
Liked, subscribed and will look out for your video's in the future on the basis of Dresden Files reviews alone. Can't wait to follow along and hear another smart review of the best "popcorn movies in my head" being made today. Enjoy! Happy to be on board.
Thanks for jumping on board. I'm currently on book 6 and I liked Grave Peril the most. Loved it.
Mike's Book Reviews my absolutely fav is Dead Beat. Bar none
I'd love to see you review each book. The story really kicks into gear in Grave Peril.
Edit: That'll teach me to comment before I've finished the video
Ha ha, I'm currently 6 books in. Haven't done the video for Blood Rites yet though.
@@mikesbookreviews Buckle your seatbelt. Butcher ups his writing game in Dead Beat. He really fleshes out Harry's identity and values.
And however fucking epic you think something can get...this is moreso. You'll know it when you see it.
I just went to B&N last night and I picked up 1st in The Wheel of Time and Dresden Files. Also a very cool magazine from Hollywood Story on The Complete Guide to Stephen King. Excited to dip my toe into more complex fantasy
Yes to the Dresden files or anything else written by Jim Butcher.
It is a great palette cleanser and they are easy to read, but that undersells how great the books are.
Butcher is one of the few writers I cannot put down, literally cost me several nights of sleep. It is a sort of addictive candy, yet very engaging. Those books have made me laugh and cry. Would highly recommend them to anyone who loves fantasy and/or noir detective stories .
On that note, the Sandman Slim novels by Richard Kadrey are great fun as well.
Rob Paul I definitely think people hear someone say “they’re easy to read” and come off thinking YA or that JB isn’t a good writer. Far from it here. They just, so far, don’t require you to keep an Excel spreadsheet to keep track of character, factions, and locations like most modern fantasy has evolved to. I can appreciate that.
You are in for one Hell of a ride!
Starting Changes next week!
Angel was such a good show.. the mood and music was phenomenal
These are facts.
Looking forward to dresden videos subbed for it
You have quite a binge ahead of you, if you desire, as I'm now current on the series. Enjoy!
Go for it man!!
I'm on Dead Beat now!
@@mikesbookreviews i know I am following your channel for quite some time now ..and i enjoy it a lot , didnt start Dresden yet but surely will, i am finishing the Malazan series right now....Wheel of time was last years big series :)
I got addicted to this not too long ago, I'm listening to the audio, I spend a lot of time in transit, got to the end and just for S'n'G went back to the first one just to see what they were like again in the beggining, when they were all young and whole and undamaged, I'm close to the end of Ghost Story... for the 4th time
I'm very much looking forward to continuing the series after my WoT marathon. I've got Dead Beat up next.
@@mikesbookreviews Oh that one's good, great adventure, new/fleshed out charaters, setting up future stuff and one of the coolest ''weapons'' ever
I just bought the first Dresden Book last week. This year is finally time for me to start the series.
I would watch you talk about Dresden. Huge fan. Got my kid hooked on all of them.
I've done videos for the first 7.
WOT, and The Dresden Files are my two main series for the past 4 years or so. Listening again most recently.
I started Malazan, but I haven’t had really had a good way to read books lately, and I am a slow reader. I just read a lot when I am into a series. I think I’d like that series best in text.
Anyway the thing about these series is that they are so long, I am ready to go over the other series again after I’m finished with the other. And it’s been really fun to go over them for theorizing in the subreddits.
I like them a lot.
Folks thinking I'm going to blow through Malazan like I have WoT or Dresden are in for a slow ride. I plan to take like 2 years reading those.
Although we are going through hard economic times and this horrific pandemic , my birthday is still upon me and I got the Kindle version of Dresden vol. 1 - 6 AND Dresden vol. 7 - 12 👍📚
Hell yeah. The first 3 are pretty good but things really pick up at book four and get great after that.
I'm nearing the end of book 8 and this is accurate.
When I recommend the series to people I apologeticallytell them that they might have to muscle through the first three or four before they REALLY see how much better this series is than everything.
My wife knew i liked John Constantine (favorite D.C. hero) and she told me that I would like The Dresden files. It took 5 years hearing her tell me to read them/listen to them. I finished them in a 3 months span and I was able to listen to Battleground a month after its release.
A little late to the party here, but as an avid fan of this series I'm always excited to see someone jump in for the first time. I love every book in the series to some degree, and the general trajectory is definitely more positive as it goes, though imo there are a few less interesting bumps in the road (6, 10 and 13 for me). Excited to see how you feel about each book in the series as it evolves and grows in scope and intruige.
I'm currently about 2/3 through book 8 and I haven't disliked a book yet. I've reviewed the first 7 on the channel, if you're looking to kill some time.
Soooo, did you know that Spike from Buffy is the Narrator for The Dresden files novels??? I had LOVED the books for years before I knew that! I started off scrolling the digital library and found Storm Front. I didn't even connect the Kids Whedon angle though! So cool!!!
Just started book one this evening. Wife and I are binging supernatural, and wanted to read something to really scratch that itch.
This is on my tbr since 6 months now, maybe I should start, since your only two books in would be cool to have discussion about them, like how stuff changes and character appreciations and such.
Eu Sunt Dracul Sounds like a plan. You could catch up in less than a week. The first two are that easy to read.
You absolutely should start. A lot of people say they're easy to read, and that's true, but I think it underplays their quality. That's more a testament to Butcher's ability as a story teller than a comment on the weight of the story.
Thhunter I certainly agree with this statement. I hate when something isn’t as complex as say Malazan and folks act like they means it’s a guilty pleasure or something.
Just finished skin games I want more so bad
At least there's finally a release date for the next one.
DF is like a drug.
2 books coming this year!
Omg. Thats why i love it! Its Angel from Buffy.
I've never actually read any of the books... But! I have listened to James Marsters tell all the stories on Audible. If I ever do actually read them, I will here them in James Marsters voice. lol Freaking Epic! I especially like where he ended up finally in settling in on TooToots voice. Fantastic.
I haven't even read HP and I find myself saying that sir. I just got into this series myself based on some recommendations for book series for my wife. Not even a week yet and I'll probably get through book 3.
Overall a pretty interesting video but the music at the beginning was way too loud. Could barely hear you.
I'm aware. Got a copyright strike on the original posting and had to edit a replacement in. I'll get it fixed before the next DF video.
More Dresden! Absolutely!!
For sure. Planning to do them all.
It's a pretty rabid fandom. I'm sure you've noticed. I have introduced 4 friends to the series and we all now wait (impatiently) for every new book.
I've sent them all links to your reviews. Great job. I'm a heavy reader that was forced into the trucking industry. Audiobooks saved my sanity. Not being able to hold a book in my hands for weeks was literally driving me crazy. I was already building up a pretty decent Audible library when I found Butchers stuff. James Marsters has definitely become the voice of Dresden in the most incredible way. Aside from a few comics, I don't own one single printed page of Butchers work. I understand your situation but just to repeat what you've already heard, James kills it in the Audiobooks and does the series proud!
Great stuff again! Mad love for you work on your channel. Peace.
@@drudgetickerspindalshot5341 I can definitely see the fandom is big, even if it seems lots have become disillusioned because it took Butcher so long between books. But if Peace Talks is great, I think they'll be right back to where they were.
Love Jim Butcher and this series. Yes, it lacks the hard-core, indepth, dark themes of so much of modern fantasy, but it is well crafted, inventive, original and fun. Hope you'll continue reading and sharing your views...
Oh yes, I'm continuing. I'm on Dead Beat right now.
I just recently started the series. I binged the first 3 in like 5 days 😂
It's so easy to do. I read the first 2 in a weekend.
Hello, just started listening to you. I love reading, usually history and current affairs. Iam 63 years old. Who are John Gwynne and Abercombies books written for ? Ive never read fanrast books. However I enjoyed the Lord of the Rings movies. When I was in my teens read horror, ghost books, and Steven Kings books
Yeah, they are easy to read. I started them in April, done by early June, looking forward to the next books. Person who recommended them to me said to skip the first 2 or 3 books (I read them anyway; wasn't too impressed, but kept going and so glad I did). I assume you're probably caught up by now, so I should go look for a follow-up Dresden video.
I read Harry Potter as a full-grown adult, and I was totally unapologetic about it. Really like Supernatural, but haven't seen the last two seasons. And really like Buffy, seen lots of Angel. Maybe some day I'll binge watch them to see the ones I missed.
Love the dresden files so much been reading them for years
Better late than never for me.
Lol my second time through this video... please talk about Dresden Files! I sat through it too
I’ve done the first 8.
I’ve read them all and they are definitely worth it. They do get better and similar to Buffy and Angel what happens always carries over creating new story directions. You may also try the Codex Alera by Butcher. These are probably one of the reasons Dresden publication has slowed a little lately.
I went ahead and got the Codex books for Kindle, too.
I got into the DF because I love fantasy and I grew up reading the gumshoe detective novels in my grandparents library (yes they were poor Arkansas farmers/laborers but they had a whole room in their house filled with shelves of books, everything from 40's and 50's collage psychology and biology to noir detective novels to children story books).
I've read all Dresden files books and I think books are getting better after the first ones. And I liked the first ones too. But I think Summer Knight was the one that blew me away and made me love the series. The book have this monster of the week style and the big story arc that interconnects the books. The last one takes some unexpected twist and turns and makes you curious what will happen in the next book. I'd like to hear you talk about the Dresden files and hear your speculation what will happen next during your journey.
Most have told me Grave Peril or Summer Night is where it hits a whole new level. I can't wait. I'll be talking about books 1 & 2 later this week.
Yup. The first few were ok, but starting with Summer Knight the series really took off. And the stakes get upped and the feels get deeper as the series grows.
Red Rising was fantastic. I still haven't picked up the follow up series, mainly cause I am scared that they wont be as good.
I was very much in the same boat. What I will tell you is that they are different since the characters are older now, but the quality is just as high. However, the series has slid further and further into the "Grimdark" subgenre. So if that isn't your thing, I'm not sure I'd recommend it. But it's brilliant stuff. I only bring it up because several folks I know stopped reading because they thought the series was getting too "bleak."
Are you still planning to review the short story collections? I would love to hear your thoughts / reactions to Zoo Day and Day One :)
I wish there were more UA-camrs covering Jim Butcher/Dresden Files
A friend just suggested Dresden Files series and I’ve only read 1/2 of Storm Front and went ahead and got the rest off eBay. (There will be 17 books by the end of Sept 2020, plus there are two short-story book collections as well)
and several graphic novels
I have a copy of Storm Front and I’m looking forward to reading it. I just can’t seem to stop reading Stephen King, ha. IT was excellent, now I’m reading ‘Salem’s Lot.
where is all the artwork in the intro from?
Where did you find the artworks? They are pretty cool ! especially at 0:44
Just finished watching buffy again. Such a good show. I've watched a few eps of angel. I will def check it out again. And x files is LEGENDARY
Jim has another series that came from a challenge to write a book about pokemon and the lost roman legion... Codex Alera. It pulls from lots of high fantasy tropes but is still fantastic. Dresden is sooo much fun.
Mike did you read Codex Alera? I would love to hear your opinion on this series 🙂
The first episode of Angel was released nearly a year before the first dresden files book
Discovering this channel, for Dresden Files.
Friends of the Mouse & Mister Adventures are welcome here.
My family introduced me to Dresden when I was about, 14? or so and I was getting into reading since school was horrible because, ADD. Reading helped, and they thought I might like it since my mom had seen me playing Skyrim once, and saw the magic and ta da. And by god did I love it, it's been such a huge part of my life since I read Stormfront, and it's like home for me. It's comfortable, well written, and so goddamn fun and engaging. The characters are amazing, the world is amazing, everything is just agh. My fav series of all time.
plus Harry and Murphy just, my favorite ship in all media. damn you Jim for Battle Grounds.
I want to hear your thoughts on The Dresden Files books. I have just started reading the series, and I'm almost done with the first book. It has been a great experience. I really like the blend of humor, suspense, mystery, magic and detective work. I am not very well read when it comes to fantasy, but I want to explore the genre and pick up several series in the future. I want to check out fantasy books and series, and then review them and write down plus/minus, favorite characters and so on. I have read 5 out of 7 Harry Potter-books, so it's not long before I'm finished with that. Many years ago I read Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit - I enjoyed LOTR the most. And I am familiar with several of Neil Gaiman's books. I am especially fond of Neverwhere and Coraline. I plan to read A song of ice and fire +++ by George R R Martin, Percy Jackson and so on from Rick Riordian.
Koichi92 I’m two books in and loving it. Can’t wait to get back to this universe.
I finally finished Wheel of Time a few months ago and decided to jump back into the Cosmere, but I was a bit burned out on epics. So I too thought I would use Dresden as a palate cleanser...and I never stopped. At Skin Game now. Have been going the James Marsters route.
Could we also get some links to the artworks used? Those are amazing.
