The dudes gather to pay tribute to John Sykes on his passing, they share memories and thoughts and Tony Dio shows us his extensive collection of John Sykes memorabilia.
After the way he got dumped by Coverdale/Whitesnake, the first Blue Murder album could've easily been a record where John tried to get even and take shots at his former band. Instead, John took inspiration from his departed friend and mentor Phil and poured that energy into the album. To me that speaks volumes about John's character. I know John's late career absence drew a lot of attention, but it is this part of his life I just described that I find really inspiring, more than you'll ever know.
Thank you guys for honoring John Sykes! My first introduction to John was Spellbound off the second Tygers of Pantang album.I was 16 and a total hard rock fan in 1981..John always reminded me of all the great qualities of Gary Moore..There was fire, passion, melody in his playing that spoke to my soul..We love you John..Keep the fire’s burning Gentleman
I have spoken to Tony Franklin and the only song they actually recorded with Ray is called "Too Late" and it is on UA-cam if you dig for it. Tony told me there may be some bits and pieces of things on tapes but no other complete songs exit. To be honest...the song Ray sings on (in my opinion) is nowhere near as strong as the Blue Murder material we got with John singing. Ray seemed to fit far better in Badlands. Cheers man
I got to see Blue Murder one time opening for Billy Squier at the Tower Theatre 12/2/89. I wish I could have seen John Sykes live again but never did. RIP
He was a top 5 or 6 guitarist for me as well. Got to see Blue Murder twice: first with Bon Jovi in '89 and then on a club tour for the 2nd album in '93 or '94. Got to meet him (and Marco Mendoza) after the club show and he autographed my Blue Murder cassette insert. He was very polite and patient with the fans, many of which were obnoxious drunks.
Was lucky enough to have seen him with Whitesnake, opening up for Quiet Riot in 1984. That first Blue Murder album is an absolute masterpiece, from start to finish and John on the Thunder and Lightning album, is the only reason I started listening to Thin Lizzy. Like Akira Takasaki, Nuno Bettencourt, Ronni Le Tekro and Vernon Reid, all incredibly underrated guitarists. John was quite simply on of the greatest lead guitarist/vocalist/songwriters who ever lived. He will be remembered.
Exactly, what makes his untimely passing so sad is I have always believed with a faith that he would eventually make a triumphant come back at one point but his illness sadly prevailed him. RIP JOHN, YOU WERE THE BEST OF ALL.
I think a great deal of his 'hibernation' - avoiding the public eye could be attributed to the fact that he was having treatment for cancer - chemotherapy etc , he was a Rock God, he wouldn't have wanted people to see him looking probably very different to how we all remembered him ....
If you haven’t heard it check out Thin Lizzy Live at Reading 1983. It’s awesome! What a fantastic guitarist he was with a unique sound. RIP John Sykes.
great tribute. let's hope they release all the concerts that make up live life as they have done with live and dangerous, strangers in the night live albums. coverdale should have been on the 1st blue murder album.
i was lucky enuf to see him on the thunder and lightening tour, and slide it in tour here in ireland - seen him in a pub in kilkenny about 20 years ago with him singing and playing with scott gorham aswell in front maybe 700 people - really sad over his passing
I was at that show in JAXX Tony, tremendous show. I wish I had seen the Thunderdome show. Especially after your assessment of Micheal Lee sounding more like Brian Downey. Brian was the true percussive beat of the Lizzy sound. John Sykes mentioned his opinion on Brian being his fave with Mike Portnoy present. He added and Mike as well. Not verbatim, but that was the gist of it.
You guys are all the same age as me. '87 was the year of Whitesnake! Sykes was a god and was robbed of his recognition. In later years I have lost respect for Coverdale, as good a vocalist he is, he has been trying to erase John Sykes even more with his later remasters of the self titled album. RIP John 😢
@zerodok no, but he brought in new musicians to redo parts and layed Sykes tracks lower in the mix and isolated his voice to be louder. The drums seem to be redone or poorly mixed too. It's just a mess.
Sykes was singing the demos for white snake because David was having troubles with his voice….im sure that kinda scared David …who had been around for awhile but was not super famous …who knows…
His Whitesnake era shiz is so sick. "He" had a sound like no one else. A haunting sound. I just checked Tigers of Pan Tang, but i don't hear that sound. TOPT just sounds like generic early metal. Not the worst, but also nothing special. And "he" (Sykes) may not even have really existed. Sorta like Pete Willis of Def Lep. Doing some of the coolest shit ever in the world, and yet, there's nothing out there for you to grasp onto. He just....disappeared...being that fucking innovative. These guys don't exist. MI-6 agents pretending to be one of us.
A Buddy of mine when we graduated from High School he headed out to L.A. to attend G.I.T. ( by then I was off into others genres of Rock that were not really guitar god oriented) When he came back home for the holidays he was all about Frank Gambale , Paul Gilbert and and interestingly enough Sykes (Blue Murder and Thunder and Lightning ) that was my first introduction: I really love Tygers and Thunder and Lightning
first saw john with the tygers of pan tang supporting gillan on there future shock tour berlin 82 .then at the monsters of rock show dortmund 83 with thin lizzy.i think this could have been lizzies last ever live show ? the other bands playing were whitesnake, twisted sister, moterhead, saxon ozzy was due to play but pulled out
...but you're right. Kind of.... It was recorded on the 'Thunder and Lightning' tour which was Sykes/Gorham, but Snowy White, Brian Robertson, Gary Moore and Eric Bell are all on 'Life/Live.' 'Life/Live' was my third Thin Lizzy album. The version of "Got to Give it Up" rules! "There are those....out there....and on the stage...etc etc." 😊
@ actually the version of Renegade with Snowy White was taken from a previous tour. I don’t think he was at the final show. The finale with Sykes, Gorham, Gary Moore, Brian Robertson and Eric Bell is awesome,
Great tribute guys, John Sykes was a true rock God, a rare talent, who never got his just due. Wish he could see all the appreciation pouring out for him in these last few days, he's a true legend! I guess that's how it always works, once a person passes and it's a fact there won't be any more creative output, their legacy of work is taken stock of and revered. I'm just digging into his solo albums and there is some really great material there too. If you're into the "high energy rock" songs, check out "Look in His Eyes," "System Ain't Working" , and "I Don't Want to Live my Life You" ua-cam.com/video/jKkIAfkLM8A/v-deo.htmlsi=Ggwo4JOfAwqhw074
Tommy Aldridge was awful with Lizzy it really shows how good brian Downey is. Gary moore done a great concert in the early 2000s as a tribute to Phil, its phenomenal and its on UA-cam. Its called one night only i think. It has scott gorham and brian robertson and eric bell on it.
@@LairoftheAlchemist I googeld, but i didn't find anything on techniques, harmonics and overtones. Only vobato was Vobato Tea House. Verbato is scarier.
He was such a god that Coverdale couldn’t handle it and had to get rid of him. He wasn’t gonna share the spotlight with nobody.
And so easy to deal with Dio, Ozzy, Def Leopard, Guns and others steered well clear.

Sykes is firmly in my list of top 5 guitarists as well, along with Gary Moore, EVH, Randy Rhoads, and Tony Iommi.
Sykes was one of the fastest alternate picking guitarist in Rock. Awesome guitarist and such a huge loss. RIP
This one hurts 😞
Thx. And its Tony Dio. !!! 🤟
I always hoped he'd dig into his vault and release those early demos that featured Tony Martin, Ray Gillen and Cozy.
I have spoken to Tony Franklin and the only song they actually recorded with Ray is called "Too Late" and it is on UA-cam if you dig for it. Johns playing is fantastic.
RIP John Sykes
I have it, totally amazing , respect from Donegal
I got to see Blue Murder one time opening for Billy Squier at the Tower Theatre 12/2/89. I wish I could have seen John Sykes live again but never did. RIP
The Squier/Blue Murder tour came to my area on that tour and I barely missed going, ugh.
John was the first generation of guitar shredders and was so brilliant...john had a incredible voice as well.thank you fr the upload and thank

They asked Sykes who his favorite drummer was he says Downey hands down..
verbato? Vibrato.
Verbato is a technique similar to vibrato but more of an emphasis on the upper harmonic, kinda like Vobato with less upper partial overtones.
