I went to a rock concert in the early 2000s. Was super surprised that the air in the arena was clear and that people were using their phone's flashlight at the end of the concert. In the years when Zep was touring any concert you went to was hazy and heavy with the scent of all the pot being smoked and at the end of a song or concert you used your Bic lighter, which of course you used to light up your joints to begin with, to show approval. Entire stadiums were lit up with Bics or similar. Good times!

The experience of being at a concert was way more important and immersive than anyone can get by watching a recording of the show. However, this is the best way to learn about the music, musicians and the performances. Just hold your lighter flame up high as long as possible till the burn felt to hot to continue.

The best thing about no cell phones was no parents or gfs calling you to see what you are up to. I went o a concert at the Paladium on 14th street in NYC around 1978. Not only did they sell beer there but you were expected to share whatever you brought in with you with the people near where u sat.

Never got to see Zeppelin, however, I have been to many concerts pre smartphone, and yeah it's a major difference. Not just the phones either. I mean those stadiums were full of smoke, and it wasn't all cigarettes. For encore's instead of smartphones you saw lighters. Thousands of them. However, to the more cogent point, all focus tended to be on the band instead of recording the band. Depending. Sometimes there was dancing, smoking and general debauchery, but you get the idea. 🙂

to me it's like being the photographer on Christmas. You miss so much of the moment, the feeling when you are distracted by trying to get the pictures. I am so glad I was a teen in the 70's and FELT the whole experience of every concert. We held up our lighters or matches to give approval. Even when I have been to recent concerts, I don't take pictures, usually I can find clips on youtube afterwards to relive the experience.

That authenticity you seek in music is a noble and just path. It is
about 'feeling', the transmission and connection, how it resonates for
us and touches in an emotional sense. It is such musical magic and
creativity, which Led Zeppelin has, that can transport us. There's soul to
their music and an integrity'; that and passion, all played by master
musicians. Is it any wonder we fall under their spell? That is what all
great art seeks to realize. Stay on your path and enjoy each unfolding
    moment. :)

Great reaction all the way around. Lots of great comments and observations. And that's great about a HomeTown Mr Miyagi! It's also good to know that you have done a bit of touring and been in recording studios before. That's been a huge part of my life for a long time in different ways. I think knowing what it's like to work in a recording studio helps you appreciate all this stuff even better and not just this stuff any stuff including hip hop. I can never not think of it that way when I listen to a studio recording. And we would typically be doing an older style of music at least compared to right now. It wasn't classic rock by any means but it still had all the same elements to recording it. And then I was in on the mixing of it and a little bit on the mastering so there's just a whole world of fascinating experience out there that all goes into the stuff that we hear everyday. Whether it's really old or really new.

What was your favorite song of yours that you've recorded?

    • @stevedahlberg8680
      @stevedahlberg8680 Рік тому

@@NAIATHEDRAGON that is a tough question to answer because I think the context that it was in is more about that particular kind of live band experience and then recording it and what I love about those situations was yeah we did the occasional you know extra overdub to add some stuff. But then that was honest because in live we would have other people come up maybe you know just guests certain nights feature of female vocalist that wasn't part of the band or yeah have a saxophone and a trumpet and a trombone. You know or maybe some night it's a clarinet and me playing trumpet along with guitar voice and all that stuff and just mix it up.
But on the other hand, I recorded all kinds of things. Not just stuck in a particular genre of more traditional music. I mean I've scored a three movement symphony. Which I could send you links to on youtube. I quit supporting my website during the pandemic and said screw it all. I'm not doing that stuff right now and so I moved a lot of it to UA-cam and so I do have links to it. It's just not a very promoted thing but you know there's classical music like that although it's kind of modern classical.
And then I did two different modern dance scores for the University of Kansas here where I live in Lawrence kansas. About 9 10 years ago maybe longer I guess it was fascinating working with choreography. I would most love to score a movie and I have scored some small stuff but working with modern dance was the other way around, they like to choreograph to already existing music that's why they normally just pick something like say in rem song or you know it could be anything but when they do decide to work with original artists and commission something, then as the composer I need to stay 16 to 32 or more bars ahead of them like every practice and they practice two times a week. So here I am like this racing do stuff on my digital home studio creating this stuff based on emotions that the choreographer told me that she wanted. But she gave me that nice sandbox without trying to micromanage it and so I would come up with stuff and go to their practices and if they asked me to modify it slightly I would. And in the end it turns out to be this live performance that has several days in a row and it's on there at the time literally million dollar sound system and audience response is great but although I'd say a lot of this because I got to know these dancers.
I'm a huge KU basketball fan for sure but seeing this side of Athletics was fascinating to me. These guys were amazing athletes. I remember on the second one I ever did, it was very intense and I kind of felt guilty because at one point I really pushed hard on this really weird radical thing I did and the kids liked it but the choreographer was like that's dangerous and then the end I went with it in this maybe in dress rehearsal like two or three days before the first of the day of the performance run? Yeah the main one that have been working on it like sprained her back doing exactly that sequence of moves to that music and it was kind of weird. And then they had an understudy that was about to step in but she wouldn't have been nearly the thing you know and then in the end this woman just they iced her down for 4 hours and she went up there and did this exhausting performance just because The Show Must Go on. Just Because The Show Must Go on. It blew me away. But anyway I have links to all of that stuff but then I've got the colloquial stuff that you might like that's kind of like I don't know it's older school it kind of countryish sometimes rockabilly it can get a bit rock I don't know. It's usually a lot of air candy for sure and some of it is indie rock or Indie pop

And in a totally different direction, my Indie pop band or indie rock band I suppose for a few years. And we played regionally and recorded unfortunately only about 10 or 12 songs. But it was so fun and and this one features my partner in crime, Lori ray, she died too early a few years ago so rest in peace to her. She was a real talent and a real pleasure to be with and then the Rhythm Section meaning the fretless bass guitar and the drummer or from my more regular band which is a honky tonk band. And they are phenomenal. And so it was half my original shit and half hers and we were just alternate and we would do harmonies to each other and come up with these really cool arrangements. And then we did a cover or two but anyway this one is one of her compositions and I arranged it and I sing backing vocals on it and play guitar and then as an overdub I added a trumpet line in there and then also some chimes like church bells or something. Cuz we were going for a really saturated Rich production here because her song is so absolutely beautiful.

Wanted to comment on the cell phone thing before I forget, yeah and you know what nowadays I'm as guilty as the next guy. I can't help getting my phone out taking some Stills and then some video and trying to get a good position and all that but on the other hand I'm pretty conscious of it and I try not to have it out constantly. Either way it's just not the same. Back then you would just get so 100% involved in the music, you didn't have any distraction like that and you didn't have to worry about dropping and breaking it or any of that stuff. And what you're seeing out there was the tradition mainly was to use cigarette lighters you know the butane lighters when you wanted to show respect. And it also it kind of have a momentum like if some people started doing it then maybe a lot of people would do it.
And it was hilarious because some people would keep them on so long that that metal gets so hot you can seriously burn your fingers if they touch it and then also people would bring multiple lighters so that when one ran out of fuel you could just pull the next one out.
And yes I was one of those idiots that learned how to do the trick where you take your pocket knife deface the opening where the butane jet is and then when you light it it's like a blowtorch; it just shoots wild intense flames like a foot or two straight up into the air and it's just so dramatic. And it was somewhat dangerous and I remember a few mishaps that would just happen. In fact if there were a lot of people doing it at a concert, that was part of the fun of just waiting for something to go wrong. Laughing my ass off right now thinking about it. That would never fly today.
And then, this was not the norm, but I was in a few really totally just kick ass shows, I'm thinking of seeing Van Halen on their second album tour in a pretty small arena. And it was around the 4th of July and there were so many bottle rockets and even Roman candles being shot off inside there!
