Thanks Gary. Would be great to see the results with the recommended sanding, Ipe oil, and spray application method.

I built an Ipe deck 8 years ago. Temps range from 0-105F. I shovel the snow off the deck in winter using a plastic edged shovel. I use deckwise cleaner before re-applying Ipe oil with a roller every 2 years. After oiling and wiping off any oil that hasn't penetrated after 20 minutes, my deck looks absolutely new. Even 8 years later I have a perfectly smooth deck for bare feet. Follow the cleaning/oiling directions on Ipe Oil can and it works great. Is this a lot of maintenance? NO! I can oil the 400 sq. ft. deck in about an hour. About 1-1/2 hours to clean, a day to dry, and an hour to oil. I'm 67 years old and it's no big deal plus the satisfaction of having a brand new looking deck is worth it; a couple hours every 2 years. No reason to sand. DO NOT STAIN or varnish!! (Ipe oil only!). Spray is messy and wasteful. It doesn't need a sealer! Just Ipe Oil.
If you want it to gray-out, so be it. If it has grayed and you want to bring it back, clean and oil. So many things wrongly presented in this video about Ipe decking...SMH!

The answer to your question is "NO". I've had an ipe' deck for 23 years and every day I regret not going with man-made.

How long will the oil last before it grays out again.

Depending on weather conditions (mostly sun exposure) anywhere from 6 months to 2 years

Spray? Oh no way man... Even slightest wind will carry that "fine mist" onto adjacent finishings. Penofin oil is extremely thin. Spraying then cleaning it up isn't the way. Best way is just an applicator and a brush. Much faster and better to brush it in then coat...
Also, you wanna remove any residue pooling in about 15 minutes by wiping with rags.

It wouldnt be so bad just applying a sealer but having to sand it before you apply the sealer is what really sucks.

Opinions are divided on the need to sand. Some clean and pressure wash. Oil used also appears to make a difference

If you're considering a brazilian hardwood, do your homework. There is no better value on the market. It's 100% sustainable and actually helps in a huge way to keep the rainforest sustainable. You do not ever have to oil these woods, they will last your lifetime. It's only if you want to see the natural color that you have to oil. If you're considering these woods at all.....do a bit more research, you'll find it's the best value by a far margin over faux wood or chemically treated pines. Plastics are crap, buy real wood and enjoy the feel and look only true wood has.
