super helpful - I showed this to my wife and it set expectations for what a hardwood deck was going to look like over time and that annual maintenance was going to be required.. but not hard to do
I built IPE deck 3 years ago. Love it. I wash and oil one time a year.

i have cumaru decking around pool in mediterranean europe, and i just left it as it is for 6 years, no maintenance of any kind, and they just become creamy silver when opposed to sun, on cloudy day simply light grey, in fact looking great. no derioration of any type jet, absolutelly stunning quality

This is a great show and tell. I have Cumaru on the way for a privacy fence. It won't get a lot of direct sunlight so it should hold up pretty good.

Great video, but what happened to the follow up?
I'm getting ready to install Cumaru on a 12 x 20 deck. Two questions: 1. since this is new wood I won't have to clean it, correct? 2. After I apply the coat of oil and wait 30 minutes, how do you recommend wiping the areas where I cannot reach? Can I lay clean clear plastic strips on the deck and walk on them to wipe off? I was thinking of oiling each board before I install it. Is that a good way to go with this?
Anyone know how Ipe reacts to wet weather of the PacNW under the shade of tree canopies? I'm using it for pathway use and concerned that moss (that grows everywhere) and the smoothness will make it too slippery to walk on.
Do these woods all have the same properties?

Where is the follow up video from it being back in the roof?
The boards were placed back on the roof, but there really aren't any notable or mentionable changes after this video. Since then, I took the boards off the roof and they are now on display at our warehouse, so customers can see what they look like, when they are weathered.

(from Ottawa) I used Deckwise Ipe Oil last summer. Looked very bad this Spring, but they refunded money ($100). Now I'm trying Olympic Elite Atlas Cedar w/Lifetime (oil based, $50) from Home Depot USA. I'm skeptical. Next Spring I'll likely try Sunfrog, or Messmers for Hardwood.
Okay so where is the follow up?
I hv a brand new Ipe deck. 8x10 with mitre border. For something beyond my control I have to have a bout a 6’ x 4’ extension on it. I won’t have to takeoff the border. I might not be doing that until spring 2021. If I make it out of how is that going to make The greying process work out between the two areas?
The natural aging of the two areas will make the extension match the existing. It will take a few months, but the natural variation in the colors of the boards also help this. I recommend a good cleaning of the existing area, when the extension is built. Wait for a few months before applying the oil. When the oil is applied to both areas, at the same time, they should match nicely. This is a HUGE advantage of using BHWs over plastic/composite options. These alternatives will never 'match' correctly.
Try Armstrong Clark. A much better product for exotics.
I had a yellow Balau deck laid and oiled with a quality UV oil..two coats.However the deck has turned completely grey after 6 months..any thoughts?

Personally experienced great results with Flood UV clear on my Ipe deck.
Funny how you guys in the US can have all of our best lumber for decks and a single maple 4x2 is not only almost impossible to get here but also costs an arm and a leg. It's a good deal of course, who would say no, but it makes me sad to see our trees being chopped down past the point of extinction in some cases since america was first discovered by the european.
America was "re-discovered". We have ancient architecture here and pre-columbus buildings made with the same ancient construction methods found all over the world. Why we are not taught the true history is the biggest mystery.
But also, to your comment, yah. American hardwoods are hard to get and expensive, especially in South Florida. Some "Brazilian Wood" companies are using sustainable methods and tree farms for a faster growing, tighter ring versions of popular species like Teak for instance.
@@AnotherScreenname ipê take at least 50 years to grow at this size, just to cut one of this boards. It's incredible illegal to cut one and I never see (in 20~ years), in any place, a "reflorest" specifically for ipê

Funny how most people think the trees are mainly cut and processed for decking demands and dont realize many of the Brazilian Hardwoods are cut to convert the rainforest into cattle fields and the lumber is sold because it's usable. Seems like Cattle ranchers and farmers are the problem.
