  • In this vlog, I take you on a search for the Tufted Puffin - a bird that spends its life at sea until breeding season, when it returns home to vegetated cliffs to make burrows and raise chicks in a colony. Oregon is one of the lucky places that these birds call home in the breeding season; however, I was either early or the puffins are returning late - but I show you another suspicion I have gotten by the look of the expectant visitors to the cliffs known to be the puffins favorite spots to make burrows and raise their chicks.
In this vlog, if you don't already know, I show you the difference between the Horned Puffin and the Tufted Puffin and what my bird book says about their breeding season locations. If you go, watch this video for the 5 places these birds have nested in the past, and are most likely to return by their scheduled nesting season: April through June. I was looking on the last day of Spring Break, and I was not alone. There were many interested on-lookers at the first choice for the Tufted Puffins' return at my first choice of where to see these birds, particularly because of the enthusiasm and enjoyment of these seabirds at:
    1. Haystack Rock in the community of Cannon Beach
    2. Pacific City - although the puffins usually prefer the ocean-facing cliff, so you might need a boat to see them.
    3. Goat Island off Harris Beach State Park near Brookings. Word has it that the Puffins no longer return here, so if you know of any, please share your information with viewers in comments, below.
    4. Oceanside - Three Capes Marine Wilderness Refuge
    5. Oregon Islands at Shore Acres State Park and Simpson Reef (past the Sealions Lookout area). This last choice is my favorite because I once photographed them in numbers after having nearly stumbled upon a saturated cliff of Puffins, Rhinocerous Auklets, and Murres. However, after searching again, I only captured a flock flying way out at sea (in the beginning of this video) which pales in comparison to my previous experience. If you go, watch my video about safety out in that area near the often abundant marine wildlife in an upcoming video. So subscribe and hit that little bell icon to be notified of this and many more upcoming videos. I post new content every Tuesday and Friday.

April through August at Cannon Beach haystack rock. July is best. Mornings, especially with low tides. Numbers were down summer 2020.
