thats what a locomotive should sound like

I know it's an EMD 567 but the raw exhaust note and blower motor whine sound make it sound more like a Fairbanks Morse OP engine, which also runs on the two-stroke diesel cycle and used in locomotives.

It`s built and designed by Swedish loco manufacturer NOHAB, Trollhättan, Sweden

Sad to say, but the normal day to day EMD sound will be history in 3 to 5 years! Mark my words! All Class 1 railroads have just about gotten rid of EMD power! Caterpillar will change that since they bought END!

One of these I saw has a 6 Cyl. General Motors Engine. & They are All 2 Strokes
    Every one of them.
Just like the old General Motors Detroit Diesel. 2 Strokes in the many Trucks I drove 31 yrs.
    Like the 238 6 Cyl 2 Stroke. & The 8-71 V-8 318 hp. 2 Stroke

To Knut Ragnar Holme... Thanks for the video !! Great to see railfans in other parts of the world. HOHAB in Sweden may design & build the Locomotive "carbody" - but, the EMD prime mover, generator (unless your running AC) & the "truck" motors are all EMD from the US.... as I'm sure your aware of.

    • @Romans--bo7br
      @Romans--bo7br 9 років тому

Ooops... I meant NOHAB... not "HoHAB". Sorry.

+2Stroke Diesel Power It's true that all the prime movers are built in de USA, but for the elctrical components for the type AA16, as it was known by EMD, it differs.
For Nohab, all of the main generators came from the US, but traction motors were suplied by either EMD or Asea from Sweden, depending on the class and subseries built.
The Norwegian Di3a for instance, uses ASEA motors, the Di3b series uses EMD motors from the US.
For the AFB (Anglo-Franco-Belgique) built loco's of the Belgian NMBS classes 52-53 and 54 and Luxemburg state railways CFL class 1600 the motors came from Smit in the Netherlands.
For many of the later builds, like SJ class 43-44, NSB Di4, NMBS class 55 and 62, DSB MZ and on, the same aplies, Prime mover and generator (or alternator) came from EMD, but traction motors mostly from local supliers.
The same fro the auxilary equipment, like cooling, auxilary grenerator, lube oil cooling, and aything more that was not mounted directly onto the engine.
And when EMD did not license other companies to build their engines, other American companies did, like Alco (MLW Canada and some Indian companies) and Lima-Baldwin-Hamilton (the Belgian company Cockerill, and Schneider from France)
The Cockerill engines were used in the Belgian classes (NMBS reeks)51, 59 and 60 (you wil find footage on UA-cam of these), the Schneider engines for the Dutch class NS 2200 9footage on youtube as well)
There is much more to tell about locomotives built in Europe that used parts or technoligy from US companies, but that's to much to tell, just start surfing the internet for anything that involves EMD, GE, Alco and Baldwin.

+dieselmupke .... Just found your reply, Thanks SO Much for all that wonderful information on EU power... I will certainly look for more videos and information, as you suggested..... wish I could visit Europe for a "Rail Fan" vacation.... would love to be able to photograph all the various types of locomotive power there, and perhaps even meet some European "Rail fans" with knowledge, as you have.
      Thanks again.

      Thanks for your reply.
A bit of info how the adventure for EMD started in Europe.
An EMD MRS-1 #1818(Military Road Switcher) visited several European countries in 1952-53 and was tested by some railroads.
This directly led to Belgium putting orders to AFB in Belgium for 52-53 and 54 classes.
Sweden wanted a smaller locomotive and they ordered a G-12 directly from EMD, the experience with this locomotive led to a small number of class T-41 build by Nohab, followed by more T-43 and T-44 locomotives.
The original G12 is preserved as class T-42 #7707.
Nohab constructed a demonstrator which led to Denmark, Norway, and Hungary ordering the AA16, the demonstrator became part of the Norwegian order and is preserved as Di3 602.
The AA16 was developed out of the Australian VR class B, built by Clyde engineering, which in itself was derived from the F7 type.
Several of the 13 MRS-1's built is preserved in the US, some in running order.

NOHAB Di3 is kind of close cousin to American EMD F3/F7. Oldschool "streamliner" design

WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IS HOW A TURNTABLE WORKS WITH ALL THAT TONNAGE ON THEM, I WOULD THINK THAT IT TAKES. A ALOT OF HORSEPOWER TO TURN THAT WHEN THRE IS HUNDREDS OF TONNES ON IT.
