I am so appreciative that I got to row for the University of Washington while I was at school there, and to share in the history of this incredible sport.
Wow that’s sooooooo coooooool😁 I had read the book for school and honestly it’s the best book I’ve read for school! It was so cool to listen to the story
It's been like 3 years since I've read this book, but the atmosphere created by the author is still one of my most loved experiences as a reader. The boys rowing perfectly in sync. Row. Row. Row. The coaxman keeping them in sync as pure exhaustion took a hold of them. The coaxman kept screaming when to row, but they couldn't hear him over the extreme noise intensity of the stands. So to keep them in sync he banged on the boat in rhythm..... Just.... the atmosphere of pure sound where as one of them you're there, rowing, body so beyond exhaustion you don't even know if you're alive anymore while the crowd around you is so loud it might as well be silence.
I wonder what was going through Don Hume's head when that second wind of energy came; it was personally inspirational for him. I believe that he thought of nothing but the feel of the boat on the water, coupled with his breathing, and started using other parts of his rowing abilities before unleashing the final wind of energy he had.
I am currently reading this book. I think about it all day at work and can't wait to get home to read the next chapter. I am currently obsessed with rowing.
A feelgood American soapie. No justice to the brilliant book where the social situation of the rowers was as important as the sport. I watched the film with a large group of rowers who just about fell apart laughing at the quality of the rowing - as one said - ''about the level of my Year 10s'.
@@ianwilson9157 Ok but they need actors for the outside the boat scenes. And yes I'd make the move a different way. BUT tell the laughing rowers...who among you even makes the Olympics?! US rowing has fallen far BUT kudos to the gold in Paris!!
at 2:24 is the unites states in the far lane? im so confused with why they look to come third. the picture in the boys in the boat is the same angle right...
The young men were amazing truly. It must also be said that they were exploited by the school. Yes they got food and a small room. But no scholarship. They in addition to the countless hours of training also had to work part time and PAY FULL TUITION. Shame on the school. This is exploitation.
How do you know they got no scholarship? Also, food and board are worth something. What did rowing bring in financially (It was a more popular sport then but still not lucrative), No one forced them to row. You and your ilk are so tiresome with your "everyone is exploited narrative". Just live life!!!!

Don Hume is my great grandfather. Thank you for this video, it was amazing to see him win❤️
Just finished the book a few minutes ago and your great grandfather was the epitome of perseverance. One of a kind.
@@DakotaB2012 thank you so much!! I’m glad he got to touch the world in that way :)

Finished the book last night and had to watch the video this morning. Incredible!
I was on the rowing team Culver 08’. One of the best team sports, loved gliding over the water. It’s not easy, but its a show of strength and teamwork
An amazing story of courage and endurance and being the underdog, a great story!!

Its the angle of the videographer. If you look close at the cones that are across the course you can see that the U.S. boat won by about 12 feet.
