      Book and movie are great. I bought several copies of the book to hand out to people I think would enjoy it. I hope the movie comes out on DVD.

    I am German - and I am very glad that the US boat won!
    The book "The Boys In The Boat" tells this story in a delightful way. It's not just about beating the German team and annoying Hitler mightily. The German rowers were ordinary human beings, too, after all. The book is also the story of 9 working class boys from the Northwest who had just gone through years of economic disasters because of the great depression. But in the trials they nevertheless managed to beat the far more privileged and traditionally successful Ivy League teams from the East Coast! Sometimes sport is not just about more or less exciting competitions.

    Thanks & subbed. An Englishman, yet this left me so caught up: when they were passing the wreath I welled up. Bravo to all those marvellous rowers.

    Imagine how much more of an epic blow out this would be if the sick guys were at 100%, they had been in the more favorable lane, which they had earned with their preliminary race, and had they heard/seen they guy yell 'Go' properly.

      The movies typically aren't that accurate

      Are all of these details verified? The footage here shows maybe a half second start delay 1:45
      edit: unless this is re-created footage, which I think has to be for the 3:05 close-ups.

    • @smooshiebear80
      @smooshiebear80 3 місяці тому +2

      Yup, details are correct. Don Hume had a respiratory infection since before they left the states, and was actually in worse shape than the movie portrayed him. He had lost a lot of weight. Before any lane assignments had been made the coach vehemently protested using the two far lanes because they provided such an extreme disadvantage. For most crews, a fast start can make or break a race, especially a sprint. The U.S. set a world record in their preliminary race where they were in a closer lane. Neither coxswain in the two far lanes could hear the start, in part because of the crowd. (In the U.S. each coxswain would raise their arm when their team was ready, so they would also be watching when to go.) Moch and the other Cox glanced away at the critical moment because they had been waiting and wondering what was going on.

    Some underdog
    USA won every Olympic 8s rowing gold medal between 1920 and 1960.
    Maybe the two World Wars had something to do with this.
