    I believe the whole point of using the extra lines was that *IF* the boat floated above the lift it would also settle back down on the lift. Looks like you had JUST the right amount of line to accomplish that. BTW, all of that electrical on the dock is now full of salt water. The gear is "rainproof" but not watertight for immersion.

    Thanks for the Video and the tips, I live in coastal North Carolina on a canal, ratchet straps are a great idea that I will implement on upcoming storms. I guess it is time to raise the generator a few feet ! Please do follow up vids on what worked and what didn't , as well as a views of the neighborhood post Ian. Thanks and stay safe.

    I've lived here all my life and I do, among other things, construction reviews on docks. The waterways are littered with boats and docks. So many people abandon their boats and they don't take care of their docks and their boatlifts. I don't know why they're not held to making sure that their boats are more secured or that they remove them from the water and put them in a boat storage facility before the storm. I mean really it's ridiculous, all of the gas and oil and Lord knows what other toxic crap is on those boats; it's just amazing to me that people don't think about protecting the resource that they so dearly want to live on, the Gulf of Mexico. I've lived here all my life and I visit the beach and go in the water fewer and fewer days during the summer. There's just too much traffic and too many rude disrespectful people moving here. They want to take down all the trees and have their entire property be one large hardscape. They can have it!

      Agreed. We were furious watching a few neighbors boats float off their lifts knowing they did nothing to prep. Zero. Just amazing.

    Nice job on the tie down.
    I’m up in the panhandle and use the same tie down straps on my boat lift to keep the cradle/boat from swinging on the lift. The boat gets a straight line west wind . More importantly how did your 911 do with the water in the garage?

    • @bobbygfl
      @bobbygfl  9 місяців тому

      Zero damage. Water came up to the oil pan.

    Looks like you left the boats at normal boarding height, couldn't the lift go higher, above the flood surge?

    • @bobbygfl
      @bobbygfl  9 місяців тому

      It could, but in the moment I could not figure out how to do it. Turns out it’s pretty simple. I guess there’s a debate on getting them up too high and putting too much leverage on the pilings with the wind.

    As a former professional yacht rigger who served all of FL, I'll take my hat off to you. You did a great job using what you had and thinking through what could possibly happen (really smart not tying the boat to the lift to avoid the boat flooding). I'd be curious to know what direction the back of your slip faces and from what angle(s) you took on most of the wind. That may have been helpful (or not) in avoiding hull damage.
    Glad you guys are OK, it kills me to see SWFL going through this disaster - been donating cash and through Amazon lists of orgs helping those in need. Look forward to seeing the area thriving again soon. Stay safe...

      Thanks. For the first part of the storm, the wind was blowing stern to bow. Then it switched for the last half bow to stern. Fortunate it wasn’t blowing sideways. The boats moved forward about 2 feet and backward about 2 feet I thought for sure the flats boat was going to miss the lift and end up half on the lift and half of the water, but amazingly they landed right back on the lift

    I did about the same thing on tying up my 24 ft. Chaparral. The bow was tie to my tiki post, all cleats were tied to my pylons (Front to Back). I did not strap down my lift, but that is a great idea because the wind and water kept pushing it back and forth scaring my pylons. Thanks for your video and next time I will have my lift cover taken off before the storm hits. They can take a year to be replaced due to demand, because many were ripped off. Coastline is who built my lift cover frame and in my eyes they make the best frame after seeing so many damaged. The Tiki Post now has a little bend, but Ian gave it a little more character and Southern Cross was able to to put new thatches on it to look like new again. Let's hope the 2024 hurricanes misses Cape Coral, many insurance companies still have not paid their debt to us home owners, who paid their debt when it was due.

    Glad you made it through okay. i was taught no question is a bad question so let me ask, did you pull your batteries out of the boats and did you pull all plugs also?

    • @bobbygfl
      @bobbygfl  6 місяців тому

      No and no. Thank God I didn’t pull the plugs. They would have sunk. In fact I asked my son in law to remove the plug on the the flats boat and he was having trouble loosening it. I decided to just leave it in at the last minute. The boat would have been 2’ under water if he was able to get out. Lucky. And the batteries keep the bilge pump running. So definitely don’t take those out.

    Well done sir. I plan on retiring to Cape Coral and know I’ll have to deal with this same situation at some point with my flats boat. I’ve lived in SFL my whole life and currently my boat stays in the garage because I don’t have ocean access. It looks like you could have raised yours higher so it wouldn’t have floated. But for sure you don’t want tie the boat down since if it can’t float the only other option is going under. Based on the water level how much surge did you estimate? Im guessing 5 feet above high tide? Removing the canopy was a good call too… they would have just gotten ripped / torn anyway.

    The angels were with you and spared you. Tying your boat up will not help if luck was not with you that day. God bless you and be safe. You might not be as lucky next time 😀🙏

      No, they did not. They worked for about three months, and then stopped. I had to replace the entire system.

    Is the one boat a spead boat pontoon hybrid hual?

    • @bobbygfl
      @bobbygfl  9 місяців тому

      It’s a hybrid bow rider. They call it a pickle, fork bow. Brilliant design that allows a single hull but a very wide bow
