Riding Out Hurricane Ian | Cape Coral Florida

  • This was our experience during the eye of Hurricane Ian at the height of the flooding. The wind blew from about 11:30am to past midnight. The flooding occurred between 2:30 and 6:30 and did not completely subside for two days.
We were incredibly lucky. Not everyone was as lucky. Please pray for the families less fortunate.
Our close neighbors had left so we knew we didn’t need to check on them. There were no reported injuries in our area.
Please check out my Hurricane Ian playlist

Since it’s already installed you could as a last resort use Quick Dam products to build up a temporary wall around it, maybe lay down a double wall then as a just in case put a small sump pump next to it with the cord running into a nearby cracked window to plug in/cut on as needed to pump out any water that might still build up from rain and leakage.

I rode it out here in Cape Coral too, as I had hurricane Irma. The storm surge came right up to my home before it stopped rising. The power went out just after 4:00 pm, and was out for over a week, just came back on Friday morning at 9:20, and I got internet back about an hour ago. I lost nothing in this storm, and I know others who lost everything. I cooked and made coffee for my neighbors on a propane camp stove for a week, and a great neighbor got us generator power until LCEC got the power back on. God help all those who were not so lucky as me and my neighbors here.

@@bobbygfl We live near the Yacht Club area of Cape Coral and had the very same experiences like yourselves as you so vividly show in your great video. In our case, the storm surge stopped just short of the level of the house floor, 5 inches to be exact. The garage was flooded with 1 inch of water though, no big deal. However, we lost a wooden fence and most of our surrounding bushes and trees, avocado and starfruit, plus one big old Royal Palm tree that came crashing down with the wind and missed our car by about 3 feet. Aggravating, but not critical of course, was the extended loss of electricity which spoilt a lot of good food in the fridge and separate freezer. Luckily, we were able to do some cooking by using an old propane camping stove. Can't do without your morning coffee! Our love and sympathy to all our fellow residents who were not as fortunate as us.

Thank you for sharing your families experience in Hurricane Ian. Whether on the clean side or the dirty side of the Hurricane and the right side is always the dirty side. That being said being in the eye of the Hurricane is nothing to sneeze at. It was a serious Hurricane that your kids can tell their kids and you can tell your grandkids in later years! It's amazing the power of a Hurricane now the second round of Ian is the flooding and many of the folks got caught in again. Sadly people in mobile homes got hit extremely hard as well as many one story houses. I think raising the A/C and Generators on to more concrete block may be a good thing to consider. Theres the chance that you will never deal with a Hurricane again and we hope not!!! But living in Florida is part of life when we were living in the Keys Hurricane Wilma was a major hurricane in 2005, wind and flooding but that is expected in the Keys due to the location of the Keys. We evacuated due to flooding and damage to cars was the norm. Again thank you for sharing your families experience during Hurricane Ian that will go down in the history books as the most catastrophic Hurricane in Florida history, for now!!! God Bless you and your family and all that were in the path that lost all their stuff. And sadly those that lost their life in the Hurricane!!!

I think all the stuff on the ground that shouldn't have been there and the smell of all the dead birds, animals and foliage made a profoundly negative, lasting mark on her. We went out by bicycle the day after Ivan passed through. Total devastation, just like what is being experienced in Ft. Myers, Cape Coral, Sanibel, etc. now. I saw the flat tail on your boy at 16:00.

Definitely, we lost power for a week and a day here and we still have to use boiling water or bottled water. At a Wal-Mart in Del Prado a crazy lady was fighting over ice and another Cuban one was yelling saying that this Wal-Mart wasn't giving anything for free...I was about to put her in her place: Do you think this is communist Cuba?? But I preferred to keep the peace and let God handle that one.

You Did Very Well considering the Massive Damage Done by Ian. I live in the pacific NW inland had a wind storm that took out over 75 big pine trees on my Property. It took two chainsaws 5 hours to get my 70 foot long driveway clear. Now 2022 I still have a handful of trees to cut and slash piles to break down and burn in my woodstove. Lot work for Free heat in the winter.

I live in Monterey, California. I just want to say THANK YOU for taking the time to very calmly and thoroughly do this video. This video is very helpful to us living near the ocean and to realize what could happen to us as well. Although, we don't have hurricanes, I am going to get sandbags just for peace of mind, elevate my generator and be more prepared. I live a block from the beach. Climate change is upon us and it is best to be prepared like you. Also, it seems you have experienced hurricanes before and are very prepared! You are lucky, thanks again for the insight of this disaster of a lifetime. God Bless.

It's gut wrenching to see the footage of the intense flooding and severe devastation that has taken place over there. Btw, no one was in the red car across the street, right? At one point it looked like the lights were on and I thought "oh please tell me there's no one in that car who needs help getting out!"
