I was considering that actually, I didn’t prep for a live rig so maybe next time I’ll catch a bunch of dinky smelts like with a sabiki or shrimp on a size 12 with a bobber, then toss it out and give it a shot. Any live bait rig you recommend I should try for this spot the next time I head over?
@@SvenGoesFishing With smelt, I like to snag them, as terrible as it sounds. toss a little bread in, then rig two #10/8 trebles about twelve inches apart with a big split shot in between.. chum some bread to get em all right in a tight circle and snag them as you need them for bait.. Cat has some big calicos and other huge fish that would take a smelt no problem..
Personally, I don't like the snagging method. I have nothing against it if you're doing it legally or safely, but I prefer to have the fish bite. If I catch a fish with bait, it had a choice, with snagging it has no say haha. That's just me though lolol. Actually at the spot I was fishing, they had fish food dispensers for 25 cents. I forgot I wanted to use it but that would be a good way to chum the area and see what else is around c:

Fishbites are awesome! I’m still experimenting with them to see what works best for what species, kinda hard to keep track of but electric chicken shrimp is by far my favorite, plus they work super well for calico bass so that’s always a bonus c: more videos to come for sure, ain’t stopping anytime soon. You definitely should :D they’re kinda hard to find on the west coast so I’m not sure where to easily find them locally :c I do have some Amazon affiliate links in the description if you would like to order them from there. It’s a tad pricier but that would be the simplest way to get the fishbites you’re looking for :D

Thanks Captain Geo :D you’re right the kelp does also remind me of Monterey, especially coast guard jetty 😂 sculpins can be spooky but they’re really not that bad to handle, just lip them like a bass or a treat them like a rockfish and you’ll be fine c: make sure you got a good grip on the lip though, if they flail then you might get accidentally poked ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yeah it’s a custom rod :D Amber actually got it for me for my birthday years ago, the origin came from a dream where I was handed it from an old wise master angler. It was called The Sven and it was covered in iridescent sea wave patterns! After I told her about the dream, she got it custom ordered and it looks just like the dream one c: I’ll show it in more detail next time I use it. The silly part was that I liked it so much that I decided against using it because I didn’t want to damage it. Except that kinda defeats the purpose of having a custom rod so ima start using it again whenever I feel like it c: if it breaks I can just fix it up and mount it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@@SvenGoesFishing Yep, any of the sculpins can give you a pretty messed up prick. Get a big enough one though and they are tasty themselves! We have them in both fresh and salt here. Catch a lot of ripple sculpin in fresh water. Tons of Irish Lords both red and black, Great Sculpin and some monster Cabazon. Plus several that are so similar I have not even tried to ID them!
Oh man that’s a crazy amount of sculpin, very nice variety :D may have to plan a trip up to Washington one day for fishing then, I’ve heard the fishing is really good up there 👌

Hi bill, in this video I was using FishBites :D, the flavors were shrimp in electric chicken and flesh/ pink color, and clam in coquina color. Since I was on a cruise, I couldn't bring shrimp with me, that would be too silly haha. FishBites are more popular on the east coast, not really used over here on the west coast so it may be hard to find some locally. I think you might be right Werf, the rainbow scorpion fish can be caught off the coastal waters of Catalina island. Apparently they’re super hard to differentiate between the California sculpin too. But that’s okay, I’ll know for next time I catch them out there c: still dangerous to handle though, just like the Cali sculpin 😂 I’ll go ahead and update the description to include that it may have been a rainbow sculpin 👌
