It's a superb track in Chiang Mai the best city in Thailand. In this round we take a look at the difference between a Tour Pro and a 5 handicapper. We play 9 holes and highlight where we are different and how to improve. Pro Mo plays on the All Thailand Tour, and the Asian Development Tour, missing out on the full Asian Tour after Q School in 2020. He is the playa's pro!

My main observation is:
Any handicap over 7 or so is not really looking to GAIN strokes. Above 7 handicap (probably above 4 handicap to be fair), we are looking to REDUCE ERRORS and SAVE STROKES. When you learn to stop wasting strokes and stop making mistakes, either with chipping, decision making, commitment, or something like that, that's when you lower you scores.
When you get down to the 1-3 range in handicap, you still need to reduce errors, but your mental game must be stronger to get below par. You also need to practice like hell. But on top of all that, we can start GAINING strokes.
If I learn to hit a driver that suits me, I can lower my scores drastically. Everything is in place, I need to practice, I need to hit longer tee shots and I need to place the ball better.
But I still make silly errors which could bring me from a 5 handicap down to a 1-2 handicap.
This is the biggest difference and why I don't like the strokes gained craze for the amateur handicap golfer. We are TRYING TO REDUCE ERRORS TO SAVE SHOTS while the ELITE GOLFERS are trying to GAIN STROKES by getting more distance, better proximity to the hole through shorter irons into the greens, more putts holed etc.
Be better than you were last round, and you'll get to your goal.
Be a baus. Just a better baus.

Running around and setting the camera up is enough to impact your performance in my opinion 🤣👍🏻
It might. Maybe a good warm up
not for a real playa
@@WendelltheSongwriter No LOL it is HARD. But definitely warmed up within 1 hole!
I think that the difference between me and a pro is that the pro plays golf.
🤣
Lol
"be you ...just better" ...good stuff ...you should publish a coffee table book of your many golfing maxims ...my favorite was... "don't sabotage your game 'cos you fear death and dying alone" ...I'm not sure what it means exactly but I am sure I like it ...that gem was on your million view vid
Something about golf disconnects the reasoning centers of the brain and makes golfers think they can consistently pull off shots they've never practiced, even routine or easy shots. Your channel has been helping me reconnect the rational part of my brain when I golf, so I can accept that I shouldn't always be "going for it", and more importantly, accept that the results, good or bad, are mostly the product of how much I've practiced or not. Now hand me my driver, I've got this...
Hold my beer...
Golf Sidekick I got you, boyfriend.
This is the type of golf vid we golfers need...... real world vs pro with tips!....running around with the tripod prob not best for staying in the zone!
Ward Glass i was thinking the same thing. thats kinda multitasking and he is playing a pro!
Hey man! This is the first video of yours I’ve seen and it was awesome! Lots of good advise, a big slice of personality and a dollop of humility. Very cool.
This is probably one of the best golf videos I've watched. It helps many understand why they are not successful in the long run. Thanks man!
Thank you playa
It’s wild that on almost every course you play, you have a caddie putting in work!
Sharing your lessons and thought processes has helped me tremendously. Thank you playa; your channel is just fantastic for me. I appreciate it.
The way you’ve put this video together is superb. Great editing, graphics, commentary etc. Well done
Great video. Great commentary. Goes to reinforce the fact that the pros are more consistent than amateurs and have a wider array of shots than the rest of us. I was watching a video of Bubba Watson putting on a clinic. At one point he’s got his driver out and he is asking people to call the shot they want to see....at the top of his backswing. So he’s at the top and someone yells “high cut” and he rips a high cut. Next swing, “low draw” and he does it. The awareness of their swing mechanics and the ability to control it to shape shots on demand makes a huge difference in the game. Also, their distance and control off the tee. Hitting wedges from the fairway into the majority of greens can result in good scoring opportunities. Which brings us to the last point, the short game. Pros have a short game that is just insane. The repertoire of shots they all possess from inside 100 yards is just nuts.
But also, as Matt noted, the pros do this for a living. They have access to facilities, coaches, equipment, etc, that weekend warriors can’t even imagine, and they use all of that all the time. If weekend warriors could hit 500+ shots a day with a launch monitor that told them everything about each shot, then played 18 holes, then worked out, and hit the chipping and putting green, we’d all be a lot better. But to get there, you have to play at or near the pro level.
link?
I mean its no different from any other sport. Relatively few amateurs would expect to match pros in football, rugby, cricket or many other sports.
Love this video. It really is all about reducing errors! For the handicappers above 15 I would say it is more about hitting consistent shots and THEN reducing errors. But, in the end - it is all about PRACTICE (and putting).
Keep up the content mate. Vids have been a great help. Playing far more relaxed has helped a heap. Hasn't quite translated into much better scores yet, but certainly enjoying golf much more now.
This is the day that I played with you guys and Mo showed up looking like he was going for a ski trip in the Swiss alps but I was in shorts and polo and still sweating. Then he goes on to shoot an absolute savage score! Hahaha
P. S. Maejo was by FAAAAR my favorite course I played in Thailand. Anyone who has the opportunity to play it, DO IT! waddacourse!
I learnt more from the 5 handicapper about how to get a decent score, maybe next time I wont be 25 over 😔😬
Just awesome content and attitude with helpful tips on the mental side of golf, this is really eye opening!
Love the birdsong in the background, takes me back to my short days in Thailand, the pao wao and the plaintive cuckoo.
Man, you give it all for this great youtube channel and you play almost like a pro. Cheers!
Pro Mo wearing that bucket and screaming one across the Amazon on the Par 5. Brilliant.
Matt - found your channel through the Mr Shortgame tourney - kudos to both of you! I love your content - I am totally at risk of self-destruction through all the “tips” on UA-cam and your content is exactly what I need as I re-enter the game after a long time without playing. Thanks a ton - hope to learn and follow the way of the playa!
Waddafind!
What a great video break down! Loved it and great footage of a Thailand golf club! 👌
This is really an OUTSTANDING video, so valuable. Thanks so much
love your swing matt. Keeping it so simple
Awesome watch Matt, you played great! Thanks for making golf even more fun and bringing a positive attitude to the game!
The only positive you don't want is an HIV test
Just found this channel through Mr short games UA-cam tournament vid. Loving the content! Great stuff keep it up.
JakeXSV he is class mate, definitely subscribe;)
Welcome aboard the juggernaut Jake
I can always learn new stuff from your video.
Thank you for all the efforts you have spend.
Thanks playa.
One off the best yet Matt. Great work.
For a five handicapper you are a very consistent ball striker. I was off five until I had to give up due to a back injury, just getting back into it now after 2 years! Glad to say the game is still there, just putting is bad! I'm only 22 so my dream of getting to scratch is maybe still on? Who knows. Love the videos dude
Thanks for sharing a great attitude and positive approach to the game! I always play assuming i am 1+ every hole and enjoy anytime i get it under!
Good thinking playa you are welcome
This was eye opening, thank you!
really really enjoyed watching this
Some great 'way of playa' play there Matt, great ball striking, well done mate.
"Forget birds for now, that's for the Pro's....or is it...Forget the Pro's, that's for the birds." This hit deep playa! Quote-game has been 🔥🔥🔥
Even a blind squirrel finds an acorn every now and then
45* "deathly cold" jesus man that's what I've been playing in all year long 2020 so far. That's like a heat wave around here at the moment!
Yes! Here in Ohio, I've played around a dozen rounds so far this year in the 40's!
Great video as usual Matt!
These comparisons videos are always fun to watch...and you can learn a few things too! I can’t wait till the courses are open, so I can get out and play 🏌️ We only have a few more months before it starts snowing again in 🇨🇦 lol
Isn't that the truth! My concern is that courses will be open this year. Crazy!
I am using irons off the tee a lot more, it does help with control, but it also calms me down and makes me think more strategically.
I threw out my driver after my round yesterday. It's my most inconsistent club by far. Even on the 1/10 chance I hit it "well", it's still only about 220 yards. I have one of those "The Perfect Club" in 24 degree that I easily hit 200 yards and straight 90% of the time. It's not as flashy as a driver, but my drives are usually worm-burners for 75 yards max.
I never played well (100-100 on a par 72 course...shot a 90 ONCE) and I didn't play for 13 years after my dad died in 2007. I played my first round back with no range time and shot a 94 with your suggestions about course management, not trying to hit "hero" shots, and playing the clubs I do hit pretty well. First round back in almost 14 years and I break 100 with ease. I would have been damn close to breaking 90 if I had not tried several times to hit my driver, knowing full well I couldn't hit it reliably. I took your advice in other videos and played to have fun. I took 3 seconds to curse bad shots, then looked forward to hitting the next good one. I intentionally tried to play to my strengths and away from my weaknesses. Thanks for your videos, Matt.
Man, I love your swing. It's so easy and fluid. I would love to be able to strike the ball like that.
Is this in the Philippines? Recognize the caddies.
That’s a great display of the difference, even though you can beat a pro or be equal on some holes. I have the capability of making easy par or birdie on every hole but half the time I don’t, mostly because of accuracy with the driver. And because I can mess up even easy shots from 100 yards in the rough or fairway. It’s always about consistency
Always love your work- Keep it up mate
Thanks KH
As a new player this was very useful
You're a great golfer dude! Good video!!
The 3 biggest things i get out of your videos comparing different level players.
1. Play shots your comfortable with, I especially need a hybrid or lofted wood that i can hit in the 200 range. At my level a 2 iron like your go to would be too hard to hit.
2. Short game, short game, short game.
3. HAVE FUN!
MATT - question, do you set up the camera to the right of your shot to avoid "seeing it" in your peripheral vision? I ask only because I think almost all your shots are going right and then see that they are not, because of the camera angle. I know these videos take a lot of time to produce, thanks for the hard work.
Hey Matt,
I really enjoy your videos. I struggled with the driver for many years. I've been enjoying recent success with it. Here are a few keys. First, when you get to the top of your backswing, just have a slight pause. Second, when coming down simply imagine that you are throwing a ball side arm...let your right hand be the main feel. Strangely, this will keep you behind the ball where you need to be. Finally, release that throw fully towards the target with a full follow through including a release of the hands. If you don't follow through, you're gonna snap hook it. As you practice, you may find that you're killing it but the direction may be slightly off. Solve this by adjusting your ball position either more in front or further back. This simple move, throwing a ball sidearm...like skipping a stone, is something everybody can do. The driver should be the easiest club in your bag to manage.
Will be seeing a pro soon
A very good effort mate. Complimentry Birdie by me to you
Neat. Course I know with friend Mo. Nice assessment.
Love all of this. Perspective.
thanks playa
I think "slipping further into self-loathing" sums up the golf experience for many people. Despite being a 17 hcp and having the kind of misses that are a danger to wildlife and adjacent housing, I have worked on the ability to reset, mentally. It still needs work, but I have a very positive experience on the course, finding moments of zen in those pure connections.
That’s a good point which is why this channel exists to hopefully get More people out of self loathing
Hi Matt nice video as always, great play by both of you. Comment at 16:20 I can totally agree with. This is pretty much exactly where I'm at right now, and I find the tee shot to be the "key" to most holes for me. While I am aiming to shoot under par, and often like to get the ball as far down the fairway (!) as possible, if it isn't quite working then I have to sometimes step back and remember this: I don't have to bomb the driver 300+, but I DO need to make solid contact and have a reasonable ball flight with whatever club I select, to get confidence up and execute the second shot to the best of my ability. Sounds a bit like the GolfSidekick philosophy... I wonder where I got it from... ;-)
Exactly playa
One of the best golf channels. Crazy how you don’t have more subscribers
I think I will ave to start asking people to like and share and subscribe. It's part o the formula but I don't do it. but I will have to start
Did you guys use the Track man for the ball following? or just a graphics ? nice quality of video.
Great video! We gotta get you confident bombing your driver! 🏌🏻♂️💣
Awesome, looks beautiful!!
Love the delayed club twirl
5 handi move
Perfectly explained and executed video. Succinct and to the point, showing us junior playas how to move up the levels to approach the Nirvana of Total Baus IDGAF Playaroonski stylee...👏🏻👊🏻💥
Gary hi nice to see you still around playa
Never tire of your shiz mate....I don't know how you manage to keep it so fresh, there's always little info bombs 💥to suprise and delight!! 👏🏻👏🏻
Great vid with a cool concept!
Some days you are the statue others you are the pigeon
thanks pimpin!
great video and ball tracker. you're pretty dang good too.
Frickin class Matt sooooo funny, but those birds 😖😖👍👍🍺🍺⛳⛳
Beautiful course, amazing video, whatta life!
waddabeautiful life
Well im a scratch golfer making and error once in a while and I can play myself out of just about any situation. I can tell you the difference is exactly what you said the pros practice everyday for many hours and in most cases its their sole job. I work full time but was able to go from 98 to sub 70's in about a year of driving range and lots of study. Now after 20 years of play and lots of practice I have narrowed down the perfect gold swing to 4 fundamentals.
Matt’s red golf ball is vibin
Love your channel
Nice to see you playing with "Johnny Canuck" again! Good luck with the Mr. Short Game Tourny and the Isolation Tourny with Seb!
Canuck will make an appearance in a 9 hole video with pro Bo
Just came to this channel
Great vid!
Welcome mack daddy
Matt - love it as always bro. With your driver one tip my coach gave me was practice to get to a level where you only have ONE miss, not a two way miss (he prefers me to hit a fade). Remember what Jack once said, he always knew if he was going to miss it, it would be right, never left.
-
You can do it bro, hit the driver, miss it only to one side and you will be scratch playa!
Yes sir, will be getting my swing in sync this year. It's severely "off" but it's not any one thing. It's a chain of events that needs the weakest link to be buffed up
Golf Sidekick you can do it bro! My view would be hit a fade. My coach told me a fade is better than a draw, less can wring with a fade. And going by the videos not much wind so hit that power fade playa
the ending music always gets me in my feels
Me too. I can't get enough of that tune
Nice camera work & commentary 👌⛳️🤣
All this covid crap has my hours all wonky.. one benefit- I happen to be up & around when Matt drops a new vid. A little bit of light beams from some place filled with hope... & that shining place appears to be a snazzy bucket hat.
Here in Sweden more people than ever are playing golf this month. We have zero restrictions for it.
Cool to see you working hard to make the videos. Waddarunna
I was pretty tired after this nine, sprinting filming al 4 people's shots. Unreal.
I can tell your body swing was different today, like you were swinging across, but you managed to play well under the circumstances and was the bad chip ,wrong club etc that hurt your score. As a 1 HC I can tell you, that yes , you need to fall in love with your driver but use it when it make sense . Try to find a Driver that is more forgiving for you, do a fitting with a pro and launch monitor to find out. And you are right, we recreational players save strokes by avoiding errors ,which usually come from bad decisions (course management ). Great video brother, like always. Thanks for sharing.
There is only one kind of real low handicapper and its an enlightened one. This is one of the things no one talks about. Genuine low handicappers below 3 handicap, talk a certain way. There's very little malice in the way a genuine "in real life" low-handicap talks - very little disbelief regarding someone's handicap, but an understanding of playing partners and how they are playing and potential of that playing partner. The internet pros and internet low handicappers are the worst. It's very rare to get a comment like yours but if anyone reads this guy's comment, this is how low handicappers talk. Thanks for the comment
This video was great
I learnt more from the 5 handicapper about how to get a decent score, maybe next time I wont be 25 over 😔😬
Great vid , lovely course
Beautiful course, one of my favorites
Great advice. You don’t have to pull the big dog out every par 5 or long par 4.
Sometimes there is such a thing as a good bogey.
Been following you for a while now Sidekick. Love your content.
Keep up the good work.
Ta Steady🇦🇺🏌🏻♂️
Well that's the thing. Hole two, I hit 4 iron 9 iron for bird, and Mo hits 3 wood punch, up n down for par.
Now in the grand scheme of things, we play 10 rounds there, he may be slightly lower than me in score doing the same strategy we each used over and over. But for the FIRST time we play a course and perhaps the only time we get to play it, do we want to enjoy it and not lose our shit, trying to "experience" the course? Or play to what we can see and leave us hungry for more for the next time
Really liked the conclusion!
Be you 👍
No one else you can be. Easy life
Your in my head playa 🤯 👊🏻👌🏻🏴
Always
Caddie No GOOOD!! But I do dig the jacket, where can I get me one of those? Thanks for the vids playya!
hit three wood or driver, what is up with all these long irons on tee for 5 handicap?
mark lauber I agree he’s a five handicap,
hit driver.
He's probably a 5 because he doesn't hit driver much. Long irons are a lot more reliable and consistent, even for pros.
First tip I ever got to shoot lower scores was to leave the driver in the truck and it worked for me.
I say Tin Cup it or die. I always take the big dog out. Two iron is my least favorite club.
Perhaps it's the fact that at that stage I was burned out from work, not able to practice. Not able to leave work behind due to some pressures setting up a business. Perhaps it's the fact that every situation is dynamic.
Hole 1: Hit iron, pro hits driver...just a 3 putt prevented it from being a tie
Hole 2: Driver par, iron birdie
Hole 3: I don't own a 3 wood, so I hit next best
Hole 4: Don't know the course, hit to what I can see. pro knows the course hits driver. Same score
Hole 5: Tied in par
Hole 6: Low confidence in driver, pain in body, weak effort. Poor bunker shot, 3 shot swing in one hole. That was the real difference.
Hole 7: Both driver, both birdie
Hole 8: Scrambling 3's
Think. Switch brain on. Proceed
Golf Sidekick what do you do for work m8? Always curious what the heck you are doing hanging out in Thailand lol wish I could live that life
"A little bit is better than nada, sometimes you want the whole enchilada" Whenever I want the whole enchilada I say to myself "Norm, man's got to know his limitations". Chicken stick engaged. Awesome video again Matt, hope you're doing well, now you know what we go through in the winter!! :) No golf, but at least we could do stuff. Now, nada.
Greatest opening scene of any movie ever
Great video!
Whaddathinka!
I noticed in your recap that you didn’t mention the 3-4 putts that burned the hole and didn’t drop. My recap would have been more along the lines of if those putts just dropped, see how much better my score would have been. In reality, if the short game is better, those putts would’ve been shorter and more of a realistic chance to make. That thinking is the difference between a low handicapper wanting to improve and a high handicapper like me!
Bobski you are right playa.
What are you using to track the ball flight?
Hahahahaha running with the camera at the end, how does that make golf fun😆. That seems like a lot of cardio for golf😊
Perche correndo e magico e meraviglioso. Non sai?
8 celsius, any given day in Sweden early summer :-)
I'm not confident in my driver neither. I just tried to go out without driver and the result was just great. One more to add to this video is you are emotional player but Mo is quite emotionless while he was playing. :-) . looking forward for your next one.
I am, but it's also hammed up a bit for the camera.
Your still really good bro, I enjoy your vids
From the sounds and ball flights, seems like you’re a really good ball striker, please teach me Lol.
Best video yet!
Bro you said that about the last one haha
@@teatimegolf clarification, it's my favourite video that I've commented on in the last 24hrs.
8C is cold??? Here In the UK that’s good weather to play golf in. Nice mild day
Still great golf!! I think you will definitely work on your driver for those long par 4's. But your strategy and way to play golf is great!!
Yes, I will be getting lessons and working on my body to get myself in order to jam hard
@@GolfSidekick I am looking forward to seeing your progress.
You are a great iron striker. Impressive
Such a good video!
I agree
nice course!! pro's are play golf the whole day all day's.. that (and their talent) give them a level we never will reach.
i did see pro Bo also in this video and you where running after her with your camera. I guess/hope that means there is another video from her comming out also.
She is coming soon playa. Totally chill legend
4:49 Don’t leave her hanging, bro!
What tool you used here to track the ball?
well done mo !
just hitting a full 4 iron off rough or fairway mesmerizes me.
