The Fat Line Bass is a patch from the Korg Polysix synth which is used on tons of Synthwave tracks. It may just be the quintessential Synthwave bass sound due to its versatility and popularity.
In this video, I’m going to show you how to recreate it on any synth VST, while using the free synth GR-8 by Phuturetone as example.

This thing will be mine. I will test it as soon as I have time.
I'm glad you enjoyed it. Let me know how it goes!
This was really useful, thanks a lot!
Btw, I really love that you show all the concepts on a free synth! It's all too easy to fall into thinking one needs to spend a lot of money on plugins/gear, when in the end it's the skill and the practice that matters. ;)
Glad you liked it! I know most people don't have your favorite paid synth so the bulk of my sound design tutorials are on free synths. My recommendation for any new synthwave producer is to get Vital and use it at least for 2-3 years and learn synthesis on it. Reminds me I should do more tutorials on Vital 😉. Thanks for watching!
@@SynthwaveDojo Yeah, Vital is a good one! (Even though I have to admit I've never used it, because I didn't want to create an account for "yet another plugin", and keep my plugin folder simple. 😅)
While we're spitballing recommendations, I suppose I'd suggest the TAL-Noisemaker for complete beginners. It's not that advanced, but that's what makes it easy to learn and perfect for a beginner. Plus it sounds great, needs no registration, and runs on every OS.
Vital - or Surge, my personal favourite - are both amazing and powerful beasts, but can be overwhelming for complete beginners, I fear. So I'm thinking, perhaps a "simpler" plugin is better suited for beginner tutorials...?
In any case, I strongly agree on the spirit of "pick one synth, and stick with it for years until you've mastered everything that synth has to offer".
👍
Not long ago I analyzed TAL Noisemaker once more, which I agree is a great free synth no doubt about it, but leaned towards Vital because of the great onboard effects and more modulation capabilities.
Great content as usual! Keep up the excellent work!
Much appreciated!
Was wondering when you'll drop your next video and lo and behold. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Perfect timing then. Glad you enjoyed it!
Great tutorial! Easy to follow, and great sound.
Also props for using a free synth so anyone can follow along.
Glad you found it helpful. Thank you for watching!
Very cool, going to try this out later on a few synths and see what sounds the best for me. Thanks for the great advice
Do let me know how it goes. Thanks for watching!
@Synthwave Dojo so I made the patch with NI Massive and Tal Uno-LX. The TAL bass patch was so good and really had a nice retro synth wave feel. Thanks again for the patch settings
It made my songs feel more full on the low end
I have both of those synths and love them completely. I'm glad you were able to capture the essence of the patch. Thanks for watching!
Great tutorial. I will try this in my Jp08
Great! Let me know how it works out!
Looking forward to your comments!
Thx for all tricks explanations
Happy to help!
Excellent video as usual . The GR8 synth is the closest to the polysix bass sound out of any synth available right now . Ive been looking for a long time and nothing come close . And its free !
I agree with you. Even though I have the Korg Polysix, I always make the Fat Line Bass patch on any synth a get a hold of, and on this one you get pretty darn close. Not bad for a free synth right?
GR⚡8 🧡
yeah, a very cool free synth
Nice tutorial. It would be great if you share those presets also, because now it seems even I copied it sounds different on Logic.
Good point. I'm currently rebuilding my website and include that once it's up and running
The only thing I'm missing and struggling with is what good plugin(s) can I use for the bass. I have ideas, but with the mass majority of plugins don't seem to fit what I need. Got any ideas?
Regarding free plugins, GR8 by Phuturetone works quite well. Synth1 if I recall correctly is pretty good too for bass. For paid plugins, NI Massive, Serum or plenty from the Arturia V collection like Prophet 5 or Jupiter 8 are awesome for bass. Thanks for watching!
What king of bass do you need? Do you have any reference of it?
@@petrstrugatsky just any good bass for synthwave in general. many tracks share the same bass sounds
Vital is incredibly flexible and free. Huge amount of oscillator waveforms, filters & effects all in one VST. My go-to for bass is a Juno emulation. I use TAL's U-No-LX, but they have a free version called U-No-62. Cherry Audio have a decent Juno emulation (DCO-106) for $29. u-he's Tyrell N6 is another great free plugin that I'd bet could offer what you want also.
@@_mickmccarthy Ive heard of Vital. might look into that setup soon!
Funny how similar it sounds to Vital's phase modulation bass.
one can often get to the same results using different synths and synthesis methods. That's the beauty of sound design :-)
I actually think You made a better sounding bass in GR8.
thanks! I also like very much how the final sound turned out with GR8. Such an underrated synth! Thank you very much for watching!
