Maude (Bea Arthur) finds out that she's been chosen to take her friend's place as Congresswoman.
From Season 6, Episode 23 'Maude's Big Move: Part 2' - Maude's friend Irene, a US Congresswoman, has died, Maude feels bereft. She's also sad, knowing Arthur, Vivian, Carol & Phillip are moving. Maude decides to run for the open position caused by Irene's death, and ends up appointed instead.

About Maude: Gutsy, smart, outspoken, and liberal -- all are terms that describe Beatrice Arthur in the title role of the TV series that spun off from the popular All in the Family. Well-educated and upper-middle-class, Maude Findlay is the archetypal feminist of her generation. She lives in suburban Tuckahoe, New York, with her fourth husband, Walter (Bill Macy), their divorced daughter, Carol (Adrienne Barbeau), and grandson Phillip. The cast also includes Rue McClanahan as Maude's best friend Vivian; Walter's best friend and neighbor Dr. Arthur Harmon (Conrad Bain); and over the course of the series, three different maids (Esther Rolle, Hermione Baddeley and Marlene Warfield). Tough issues like abortion, alcoholism, women's liberation, menopause and politics are all fodder for the show's sharp wit and social commentary.

SPOILER ALERT: Arthur retiring to become a small town doctor in ID, Carol getting a promotion which prompts a move to CO, Walter sells his appliance business after rebuilding it from bankruptcy, and Maude becomes a congresswoman, and inheriting a motley crew of a staff from Irene, how it all ended.

From what I read, the ratings for season 6 were dropping, and the producers decided to revamp the show by writing out Arthur, Vivian and Carol, having them move out West, and relocating Maude and Walter to DC, where Maude becomes a legislator, something like Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, except its Mrs. Findlay Goes to Washington. Bea Arthur, however, was tired of doing the series, and felt the show ran its course, so the finale was Maude struggling with her new staff and the political culture of DC.
