How To Add Art-Gilt Edging To Your Bibles

- I was surprised with how easy it was to apply art gilt edging to my Bibles. This week I filmed a tutorial and shared some of the lessons I learned after applying art-gilting to multiple Bibles.

Great idea using an ink blending tool for this. From a paper crafter, If you want to do this too, Ink blending tools come in felt or foam. He’s using the one by ranger ink which uses foam. Domed blenders usually work nicely on paper to avoid hard edges but may not be applicable here. Keep in mind that distress products are designed to be water reactive so if they get wet they will be splotchy for that distress effect. This may or may not be an issue for this application, but I’d imagine it would on non gilded pages. Also keep in mind he’s using distress ink (dye based), as opposed to distress oxide (pigment and dye) which is more chalky. They look alike. If I were doing it I’d likely go for archival brand dye based ink pads and heat set it, but try it on a cheap book/notebook/Bible first. If you have a block laying around you can diy a blender by velcroing felt on it. If the felt is thin maybe adhere two together but be careful to smooth glue with your finger to avoid bumps. If you just glue Velcro to a block, the felt will stick to It and you can then change out the felt pads. If you want it just like the one he’s using, glue foam to the felt then stick the felt side to the Velcro on the block. Or just buy the ink blending foam by ranger and use something at home with Velcro for your block. Id also suggest using light tack washi tape to protect the edge of your top page. You can use washi to attach a piece of paper there as well to protect the page, with the washi along the edge you are working on and the paper protecting the rest of the page. When you remove the washi it should pull up easily but some are more sticky than others, if you have trouble pull it straight back on itself instead of up and/or heat it up a bit with a hair dryer first, but it shouldn’t be a problem.
Any thoughts on a dye that wouldn't react to water? I hate when a snowflake or raindrop ruins my Bible edge...
@@integritydesign-reviewlead9382 really any that says dye based and not distress, hybrid, pigment, or reactive. There is a brand called archival ink and I’d try that.
I have a lot of Dr. PH Martins “ Acrylic Ink”. Also have India Ink for calligraphy. Maybe I’ll test on an old book?… getting an ESV Buffalo Leather Journaling Bible. It has no gold or silver guilding on it. I’ll try an old book…LOL. THANKS FOR THE TIPS! 🤗❤️🙏🏻

Outstanding work. I've mastered the art of removing head and tailbands to replace them with different ones and insert different ribbons and the results are undetectable that it didn't come that way. Now on to art gilt... 😁

Thanks for showing the mixed results on a worn-gilt Bible. That helped me decide to sand off the silver edges on a Bible in my to-do pile before adding color. Might also add a speckle technique on top of the color.

On a Bible with splotches or places where the gilding has worn away, I would put gold instead of red or blue. I bet it would look fantastic.
I have a Precept Study Bible that came with plain white pages. No gold gilt at all. Can I use this technique to add gold gilt to a blank edge Bible?

Very nice! I art gilted my Marked Reference Bible. Didnt turnout well because it’s an old bible and the gold gilting was very worn. I’d like to do my Revival bible some time!

Can you put up a link to the "stamp" type of tool you are using to apply the ink? It seems to lay down the ink quite nice.
I'm not sure the link. It's just something my wife's had for years. But, it is a velcro stamp handle and the pad I'm using is a soft foam that velcros on to the handle. Hope that helps.

soo....I don't do the gold. Just the ink after the gold is applied to a bound book. Sorry I can't answer that.
Have you tried this on non-gilded page edges? So you started with a gold edged Bible. What if there is no metallic edge to begin with?
I have, it was a CSB I did first to see how it would do. The process is the same, you'll just have the colour showing when it's closes. The CSB I mentioned, I put blue ink on it because it had a dark blue cover.

Thanks for posting this! I have a 1995 New Open Bible Study Edition that is crying out for me to do this to it and give ribbon changing a try too. It was a $3.00 used bookstore find that is free of mark ups and in excellent shape except for the faded gilding. So hey, what can go wrong? Now, off to the craft store...

@@davidleebrown3956 Very good actually. I could have picked a better color for the gilding than Distressed Oxides - Rusty Hinge, a brighter more gold color, but the Bible still looks vastly better. I am still deciding on the ribbon colors. I have to say too, the leather (Nelson "genuine bonded"- nothing but the best here) cleaned up really well and is still surprising sturdy. David, that is awesome. What did you use to apply the ink? I really enjoy and really value what you do in your videos. It’s helped me out soo much in my premium Bible purchasing and I think I have the courage now to change some ribbons and add some guilding.

I tried this on an older bible.. that had most of the original gold tint was worn off.mostly white showing... but now when the bible is open and when it is closed.. all I see is the red tint.. shouldn t the red ink I rubbed on this way.. be hidden when the bible is closed?.. its not!..

I'd say hobby lobby. My wife already had this stuff so I didn't need to go buy anything.
What's the difference between page dying and gilt lines?
Page dyeing is generally done with pigmented India ink after the pages are placed in a book clamp and the page edges sanded smooth, after which you can apply beeswax and burnish with an agate or bloodstone burnisher for a high-polish shine. Art gilt is generally applied in the manner of this video with permanent archival ink.

You don't need to go that far since the pages don't spread at the binding.

this might work good in theory... I may have to buy a cheap bible and try this on..... a new one that still has the gold gilding on the edges... because.. using an old one.. definitely did not give me the results as shown... all I see is the red ink now on the bible I did it to..opened or closed.. I was expecting to see the red when open and the worn off original gilding when closed..that is not what happened....I will definitely NOT try this on an expensive bible with Gold gilding on it.. I would hate to ruin the gold with the red ink.. its not quite as a bad feeling having an older bible all red,, probably better than the no color that the edge had to it before....

Pure cosmetic. It protects it from being plain.
I might have to do this to my premium nelson bibles. They advertise theirs as red. But its 100% not red, its pink. And as a dude, not that fond of pink. I do have a personal size bonded leather from them I can do first for practice though. Really really disappointed that they advertise pink as red. It is so wrong. Definitely false advertising.
